Titus at least grows as a character and he's generally got a positive attitude. Because of his growth he actually has a pretty high spot on my Final Fantasy Main Characters rating scale.

Squall on the other hand is composed almost entirely of negative elements... he's a jerk, he's a whiner, he's apathetic, he treats the other characters like garbage, he has no sense of humor and his character design is way to J-Pop for most peoples liking. Also he barely grows throughout the course of the game and doesn't get nearly so punchy and ending as Tidus.

Still though, he's not my most "hated" Final Fantasy main character... that dubious honor goes to Vaan of FF12... his voice is grating as hell, he serves no purpose in the plot, has no character development and has horrible character design. Worst of all the REST of the cast is so damn good... what is this little putz doing there? At least FFX had Wakka to make Tidus look slightly less ridiculous.

Honestly i can't stand Vaan . He is such a Boob. I mean seriously he has to be the most immature entitle , little piece of trash i have ever had as a main protagonist. He needs a good kick in the pants. ... But then again , Balthier keeps saying he is the main character so i'm not sure if this counts. The main character can't die right ? :)

Including others who join the party? Hope.

Only the main protagonist? Umm, Vincent Valentine from Dirge of Cerberus.

I agree that he does get better by the end, but by god is he the most annoying character I have ever had the misfortune to play as. It's like he went out of his way to get on my nerves.

So I'll absolutely nominate Titus.

Main character then Vaan for simply having no purpose and personality he makes vanilla look exciting (no not Vanille) also his voice kind of annoys me. If you want the next few worst just keep going with FFXII characters excluding Balthier and Basche the only ones with any personality at all.

Other than those Snow and Hope from XIII were terrible especially Snow he goes through no development at all Hope changes a bit at least. The only reason Snow is above most of the cast for XII was because despite me hating him he does have a personality (a bloody annoying one) and his dress sense (is stupid) makes him stand out a bit, unlike those boring boring people in XII I mean how do you make a bunny girl boring as hell and completely unlikeable im not sure but XII managed it. Ok gonna stop ragging on XII now I just really hated the characters in it.

Vincent in that game was so bad it was funny except cutscene Vincent he was amazing why couldnt we have him instead of the other retard they got to portray him in the game sections. Ill let him off though that game made me laugh thanks to the terrible characters in it or at least how the characters were used in it.

Lightning is billed as the main character of FFXIII but I would say the game is more of an ensemble of main characters with roughly equal screen time, so can I say Vanille and still be obeying the rules of this thread? :)

Vaan was irrelevant. The main protagonist was going to be, and should have been, Basch...

I can't stand Zidane. In fact about the only character I liked in 9 was Freya.

I can forgive half the cast in 12 simply because the characters were barely important enough to genuinely grow distaste for.

My first thought was...

...and you pretty much nailed it. I didn't like FF8 at all as a game. To be fair I do normally base my opinions on gameplay above all else and there were legitimate gameplay reasons for me not liking that game. But the characters were awful as well.

I've been thinking... the FF series in Japan might have simply followed the trends of the times. FF6 was silly, childish and funny (and it was funny). In the west this gained more of a cult, alternative following. In Japan this was probably seen more as pop-culture. By the time FF8 came and Square were full on J-Pop, this might not have been such a surprise for the Japanese audience. It just so happened that the cringe-worthy head-in-your-heads why-why-fucking-why culture of the west happened to align with the same culture in Japan at that time. Is there anything in that? That's how I try to justify it internally anyway.

Squall isn't the worst to me, he's just the least interesting, like the writers literally forgot to give him a personality so he just apathetically reacts to things. Tidus was irritating sometimes, but I think alot of it had to do with melodramatic dialogue mixed with a voice actor who didn't know exactly what mood to be going for. And Vaan... well, fuck Vaan.

I have to go with Seymour in FFX though. There was nothing foreboding about that asshat, and in a series known for characters with stupid outfits Seymour STILL manager to stand out. I can accept cookie-cutter protagonists, but when it comes to bad guys, you have to give me something. I don't even remember what Seymour was trying to accomplish - people are sad, so the world should be destroyed so they won't be sad anymore? There was no believable emotional, political, or philosophical incentive for his actions. And you had to fight him like 5 times.

His summon was pretty scary though.

Tidus without a doubt. Stupid, unlikeable, pompous jackass.

As far as Hope goes, I really don't understand all the hate for him. If you were 14 years old, and you watch your mother die and then got branded for death yourself, how would you react? He went from the character who was too afraid to speak up to the person he (wrongly in a fit of emotion) deemed responsible for his mother's death, to being the optimist toward the end of the game who gave the group motivational speeches. There was an incredible amount of character growth in him, and all the character of Final Fantasy XIII, and I think the game deserves more credit than it gets.

Now I can understand people getting irritated with Hope and Snow if they only played a couple hours of the game. They were written to be unlikeable on purpose toward the beginning, but grow to be better characters. I do however acknowledge that purposely annoying is still ANNOYING, and Sqaure-Enix should have known better.

I wish this were true, according to Wikipedia they designed Squall very deliberately to be a "different" kind of JRPG hero. There was no accident in his lack of personality, they intended him to be that way... it's very, very saddening.

If the answer to this question isn't Squall without argument, then I don't wanna hear it. When you're the low-point protagonist of a low-point game that does everything wrong, you can't say otherwise.

/sigh... should have seen that coming. It seems like half the team for these games are creative geniuses, and the other half have the mentality of sixteen year old fangirls. Or maybe they just know their audience. It's like how in FFXII the story was supposed to center around Basche, but young male Japanese audiences responded negatively because they "couldn't relate" to him, so they threw in Vaan and Penelo.

I'd have to give that award to Vanille.

The main reason behind it is that she has to have some of the worst presentation in the series. Everything from her voice to her personality (faking it or not) is just utterly annoying. There's no reason for all of those ludicrous moans and groans she constantly makes, her "bubbly" attitude goes so far beyond annoying, when she finally gets serious it's comical at best, and her dialogue is just...ugh.
