Most Unsurprising News of The Month: A New Call of Duty is Coming in 2015

This year's Call of Duty is being made by Black Ops developer Treyarch.

Right at the top of things that everyone already pretty much expected to happen, Activision has today announced that a new Call of Duty title is planned for release in 2015. Activision Publishing Eric Hirshberg confirmed the news at the company's annual earnings call, stating that the new title will come to us from Treyarch, the minds behind the Black Ops series.

"This fall's game will be Treyarch's first on the three-year development cycle," he said. "It will be loaded with innovation, and we're excited to share more details with our community soon." Activision announced the switch to a three-year dev cycle last year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132089-Call-of-Duty-Switches-to-Three-Year-Development-Cycle], explaining that new developer Sledgehammer would join Treyarch and original Call of Duty dev Infinity Ward to ensure that we get a new CoD every single year.

Treyarch first started off its CoD development with Call of Duty: World at War, where it introduced the "Zombies" mode that became ubiquitous with the developer. Black Ops 1 and 2 "remain the biggest-selling titles in franchise history," Hirshberg said, beating out Ghosts, and last year's Advanced Warfare [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/editorials/reviews/12557-Call-of-Duty-Advanced-Warfare-Review].

Hirshberg didn't offer us any further details on the title, such as its subtitle, or whether it would be continuing the narrative of Black Ops II, or heading to a new setting.

I just hope that the innovation that has been "loaded" into this game isn't the same innovation that Activision loaded Dungeon Keeper Mobile with.
Uh, yeah, Activision's Dungeon Keeper. Right.

Not that the actual publisher of Dungeon Keeper Mobile is any better, but you'd think an article like this would be proofread properly.

Oh good, Treyarch's turn. Infinity Ward seems to have lost their magic with Ghosts (I actually traded that one in, the first CoD game I've done that with--ever), and Advanced Warfare just wasn't that...impressive to me. The story and characters just fell a bit short for my liking. Yes, I am that rare person that plays CoD for single player.

But Treyarch still seems to remember what makes CoD fun, so I'm hoping they'll continue that trend with this one. Plus, really hoping for the continuation of the zombie storyline. Yes, I know that the original cast's story is done, but the way that it ended, it sounded like there is something much worse going on in real life for Sam and Eddy.

I think the people that do are the same kind of people who sort their M&M's before eating them. You just really want to tell them it's just food dye and all the chocolate tastes the same...

Poor souls.

Well, I suppose if I'm going to play a Call of Duty game it'll be one made by Treyarch, given that they were the ones behind the rather average Black Ops 1 and then the rather surprisingly good Black Ops 2 (speaking purely in terms of single-player, of course). The other games (aside from the first Modern Warfare) didn't really do it for me; I mean, Ghosts was boring, World at War was more boring (yes, I know it was developed by Treyarch) and I didn't even bother with Advanced Warfare.

I'm still waiting for a Call of Duty game that take place in the far future in an actual war setting as opposed to the near future. Until I hear about something akin to "World War 2... in space", there isn't much that's going to get me excited about the franchise.

The first game in the series by Treyarch was CoD 3 (or if you want to be really specific, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One). Yeah, I don't really want to think about CoD 3 much either.

Still, Treyarch's turn now, I hope they took advantage of the three year dev cycle, given that they haven't burst into flames since 2009 and they haven't just been derivative of the previous games in the series. Must hype for a Treyarch game on the Xbox One <3

I like Treyarch's Call of Duty trilogy they did. It was nice to see some continuity in there and personally I felt Black Ops 2 was just as good as Modern Warfare 4. Helps they had an actual screenwriter.

I am still baffled that this series has a working eSports scene behind it. It must be very frustrating to get used to a new CoD EVERY YEAR - not only as a progamer, also as a competitive player. Granted, I don't know how different they really are to one another. But we all know that sequels do not necessarily make everything better. Often times worse. In this day and age were every eSport needs to have developer support, you have to play the latest game in the series because of it. You think the last one had better gameplay mechanics? The latest is just a dumbed down version? Too bad for you! Yes you can play it, but the eSports scene had to move on to the next title. And as a progamer, you have to follow otherwise you have no credible tournaments to compete in!

Even my favorite eSports (Halo and Starcraft) do this shit. Though not on this scale. You prefer Halo without sprint and ADS? Though luck, Halo 5 will be played in 343i's own league and tournament organizers will get extra money from them to make H5 tournies.
Oh silly Korean eSports association, you want to play Starcraft BroodWar because you think it is the better competitive game compared to SC2 and you have a ten year history behind competitive BW? We will bully you into accepting SC2, then do nothing special with the franchise when f2p MOBAs are on the horizon, so LoL can take over in the homeland of eSports that our own game created!

Really wish that Valve would make a Starcraft clone so I don't have to deal with Blizzards BS anymore. To have a successfull eSport in the long run, you need to go f2p and only balance the game and update the graphics from time to time. Which is, as far as I understand it, how Valve handles Dota 2 and CS: GO.

Sorry for the rant. I know that Activision does this because it makes them tons of money and they see eSports just as a marketing tool to exploit as far as they can. I just feel sad for the fans of CoD who enjoy it as an eSport - despite my distaste for the game itself.

Some.
Personally, I only buy the Treyarch games for the Zombie Mode and Singleplayer. Covers me completely.

Curious, where they are going with it, tho. There are several options I can think of, the most obvious ones:
1) Make it nothing BUT Zombies. It is a selling point for a lot of people and with BO2, they already showed that competitive modes are possible (and modifying a few normal modes to support Zombies with it doesn't sound too hard. TDM turns from "most kills" to "least deaths" with Zombies being a third, non-playable faction trying to kill both parties. Just one example.) Plus it would allow to continue where Buried or Moon left of (or both), tie Mob of the Dead and Weasel more into the overall narrative and so on.
2) Go further YET AGAIN in time, continue the tale of the Mason familiy (with the son/daughter of David Mason - yes, I even see a female character as an lead playercharacter in a CoD from Treyarch as option)
3) Fill the gap between Blops 1 and Blops 2
4) Fill the gap between 80's and 2025 where Alex went missing (also declaring Alex surviving canon that way)
5) Clear things up about Reznov, ffs!

Unrelated to that, I read recently (two months ago or so) that the next CoD might be called "World at War 2", meaning a new WW2 game may also be possible, being a more direct sequel to WaW - even tho the title is that generic, going with my suggestion #2 and just show us a WW3-scenario instead is just as possible with that title.

Innovations? Are we back in 2010 and "innovations" is the hip buzzword that gets funding or something?
I bet they will "innovate" the crap out of customers

P.S. Also, Steven, haven't you received a memo? "Enthusiasm" is a new cool thing on Escapist. Not enough enthusiasm, dammit! Dance monkey, DANCE!!!

Ass-Creed and COD announcemnets are like Christmas: they seem to start earlier every year.

I look forward to the point when they start announcing next year's iteration before they release this year's. It can't be far off.
