I was more shocked over that the mother was upset. It seems as if she reacts only because it maybe eventually possibly says "Islam". Had the game clearly and intentionally said "Jesus is the light" would she have been as upset?
She may well have been. The problem with this isn't so much the 'islam is the light' It's that this kind of advertising is in a game. This message is being defended alot on the grounds of "oh you 'would' say that about the islamic people." But I wouldn't be surprised if the same people who are being accused of this were just as outraged if not more so if the toy had said "Coke is great, drink Coke."

However I do think the report was crap and it was definitely done in a fashion that encourages xenophobia.

The power of the mind! Anyway, "the light" might be "delight." I have no idea what the "islam" could be.

It did sound a bit like it. I'm not Christian or Muslim, and I have to admit I heard something similar. But was that because it was so emphasised that I was expecting to hear it?

It could easily have been a statement about the DS Lite. Its slurred and such, but I really doubt that its trying to covert children to Islam. Also, the fact that both the doll and the game said the same phrase to the same woman makes me think the woman is either more paranoid, or is making this shit up. I also wouldn't likely have heard "Islam is the Light" if they hadn't been repeating it in the new report. It seems like people just get paranoid about Islam, which they shouldn't be, its the largest growing religion at the moment, but of the billion people that are Muslim, how many do you think are trying to destroy America? Very few.

Bottom Line: I don't think that Islam is trying to invade the west through DS Lite. The message could easily have been "blahdey blahdey DS Lite".

And what would the mother have done if it had said something about Jesus?
Nothing, because the Christian Extremists don't suicide bomb your house.
So, a child hearing, "Islam is the light" is gonna become a terrorist?

Whether or not it says "Islam is the light" or not, I doubt it's going to turn he child into a terrorist. And I don't see how the words "Islam is the light" are unsuitable for children.

Both the mom and the newscasters seem like your typical suburbanite islamophobes to me. "A religion other than Christianity or Judaism? Oh lord no!"

No, but if Islam wants respect they need to stop living in the dark ages. Until they do that, Islam = Evil will be the mentality held by the masses.

Seriously, this "Islam is bad" is just "us vs. them"ism with a thin veneer of rationalisation, like any other silly, sweeping statement about people. I can point to the evils of Christianity and Rastafarianism (heck, even Buddhism) just as easily as those of Islam.

Humans are humans, and do stupid things they later excuse any way they can; blaming God(s) is a common excuse, and blaming others' God(s) is an even more common excuse for stupidly snubbing other people.

It is, to borrow a phrase, time to set aside such childish things.

dear god! exposing our children to other peoples beliefs and culture?!?!
what has the world gone too that we can't live in a subtly suppressive Christan America that makes us ignorant to the world beyond this country? i say we should ban this evil game for saying anything that is non-american for us.

obviously in terms of the game it's an extremely bad case of the lazies because the saying "islam is the light" sounds exactly the same both in the game and the doll. So obviously the mother needs to work on her logic as to where it came from.

Now onto why she is freaking out. I find it rather sad that a mother is so driven by faith that something so minor of a thing about how another religion's belief is being said through kid's toys. I do find it interesting on how a doll is being programmed to say "Islam is the light" and that the makers don't even listen to the content. I mean i could understand a gargling noise and then hearing faintly hearing a curse because some times when you do mix sounds it can sound like words. But this is a small sentence that states it kinda clearly.

But i am repeating it is sad that a mother believes that her children shouldn't be playing with toys or games that have anything to do with another faith.

OHNOES! cheap game producers and baby doll manufacturers both bought bad sound clips from unnamed soundclip providing studio! CONSPIRACY!

You know the sound a pot makes when you smash in a Zelda game? Well that EXACT sound clip is present in MANY Games! Or it's just propaganda to make me want to play through Link to the Past once more...

I'm with ElephantGuts on this one. If you listen to song lyrcis for the first time you get your own impression of them and if you go online to check them sometimes they say something completely different.

The whole world needs to get out of the dark ages. Religion narrows views more and more nowadays, and Christianity is not at all more accepting than any other religion. In it's absence, several wide-scale conflicts wouldn't have a reason to exist... and more people would start trying to find rational explanations of the world around them rather than place their bets on blind faith.

Oh lord, what has the world come to when people can't stand anything that vaguely sounds like something from another religion? I mean really, is it such a big deal if a game has a sound that ALMOST sounds like "Islam is the light"? Would people care so much if it said "Jesus is our hero"?
