Mount and Blade: Warband is the second game in an epic series, it involves you, (A random noble/warrior/peasant/craftsman), in a Medieval world!

The main aspect of the game is raising an army, becoming a vassal, getting a town, getting more favor, getting involved in a war, becoming King. But you can do much more, from being a bandit to a Merchant!

The battles are epic scale, over 400 soldiers on the field at once, and you're ONE OF THEM, so you're in the midst of it, trying to give orders to your soldiers and eventually win the field.

But that's not the only awesome thing, from getting favour from doing jobs for another lord, to back-stabbing your friend, infiltrating enemy castles, tournaments and managing your very own village, (If you become a vassal of course).

Then War-Time will inevitably come, and you'll be a very low ranking noble/officer/mercenary and you'll take part in sieges, capturing enemy nobles and selling them back. It is essential that you do as much as possible during this time.

The game is also unforgiving, you're not going to be able to take down a major noble at the start, they'll crush you, and re-making your army is quite a hassal.

Essentially you start with only a few volunteers, but if you're rich you can hire mercenarys or just train your volunteers to become whatever role you wish.

Overall, I am really asking, does anyone on the Escapist play and ENJOY this wonderful game?

I love it. I spent about 6 or 7 hours playing yesterday, as I hadn't played in a while, and playing it again reminded me of how great it was. It's an easy game to get lost in, when the map textures aren't screwing up.

Yes, Bows are cheap and Bandits always have them, so I'd suggest killing them for a bow, (Starter Bow of course!)

I enjoy it. A lot of people criticize its graphics, but who really gives a damn? Games now will be laughed at ten years anyway. Graphics is like beauty, liking it is superficial and you will most likely lose it in the future so you might as well have a good personality (gameplay or anything unique).

Edit: while a rare thread like this lasts, is it possible to have multiple mods running? Or am I restricted to one at a time?
I don't think it's possible. Then again, the only mods I've played are completely separate modules with a different map, models, etc. so not sure.

I do believe only one mod can be ran at a time, not sure about maps/models.

I have had it since release and I love the game. Haven't played it much lately but I went into modding it and put together a bunch of great community mods as well as my own tweaks, fixes and addons to make a larger mod that I play on a regular basis now. When I play, that is.

Meh, got over it. The original version is a bit more fun and fast paced, thanks in no small part to not having factions.

This game just has too damn many stretches where you have absolutely nothing to do that's particularly relevant to your long term goals. You end up either doing tedious quests for various nobles for brownie points, and traversing the map trying to trade simply because the devs couldn't bother to throw in a timeskip feature. Even then, your territories don't provide enough cash to really support an army, so you end up having to do inane crap regardless.

Ctrl+Space is your friend.

Also, brilliant game. Steam Achievements was causing it to crash on a load, had to enable cheats to get around that bug, but otherwise have been playing without a hitch.

My dad owns it, so I gave it try and I really couldn't get into it. The controls were awkward and everything felt clunky. I didn't feel it was really fleshed out. Oh well, just not for me I guess.

Great game, but I really wish someone in a major development firm would notice it, snatch it up, and throw bags of cash at it. With some better writing and a slightly more fleshed-out set of non-war activities, it could be incredible.

Anyone know of any mods that encompass something as 'significant' as the Vanilla game but are playable singleplayer?

I've seen a few, but they seem to be small campaigns, nothing quite so free-roam.

Ehhhhh...

It's alright. Good enough for me to play it every now and again.

To balance out the gratuitous gushing in the OP, I offer some criticisms:
- The interface is fucking awful. Poorly structured, messy and convoluted. Quite possibly the worst I have ever seen.
- The quests are boring and mostly repetitive.
- The vast majority of your time will be spent watching a little horse move around a map.
- The main map is covered in forests that do nothing but slow your movement speed, meaning you will spend even more time watching that little horse.
- There is a day/night cycle that does nothing but slow your movement speed during the night, meaning, once again, that you will spend even more time watching that little horse.
- Some of the battle maps are covered in steep hills and cliffs that slow you down to a crawl.
- There are numerous little miscellaneous annoyances at every turn. For example, the only way to leave the game during a siege is to force quit the damn application.
- You have to grind like a fiend to garrison your castles and towns.
- You can never die. This means that the only way the game can punish you is by taking away your items/money/allies/troops/territories etc. So then you have to grind like a fiend to get them back.
- The battles all start to feel the same after a while. Because they are.
- It's a "true sandbox" game, so there is no story whatsoever.

So basically, it's a sandbox grindfest with no pacing and no overarching story or structure.

It does have a certain appeal though. The basic combat gameplay is kinda fun though. And carving out your own little kingdom is a welcome challenge.

They need to completely restructure the interface, clean up the maps and add a time acceleration feature. Then the game might actually be good, instead of alright.

You are right in most of your observations though i liked the realistic night/day/hills/forest speed reduction. The game is very addictive and i can see a lot of potential for when they make the second game(warband is just an expantion). Hopefully they will allow unlimited saves. As a programmer i am convinced they just need a couple of hours to implement that.

That is there, but it's not what I had in mind, armies still need to eat and you still need some way to collect cash in the interim, there's really not much to speed through. The timeskip I was thinking of was more along the lines of "Autopilot doing tedious s*** until the next war breaks out."
