I liked it too!

Though when I first watched it I was like 7 or 8 years old.

Everyone (and I do mean everyone) hates Spiderman 3. They hate it with a vengeance, but it is in my Top 5 movies of that year. Heck, Top 10 of all my life. I really don't know why people hate it so much.

Worst of all, my two favorite scenes in the movie are the vortex of hate of most people:
Thank you for reminding me why I want to hit that man in the face with a hard piece of metal.

Fair enough, but why? No one has a reason. They just... hate it.

Anything featuring will ferrell makes me want to *insert intense rage based statement too ragey and violent for words here)

He can't act, he's not funny, he helped kill SNL and for some reason people think this talentless hack of an over grown inbred man child is freakin awesome. I have never walked out of a will ferrell movie simply because I haven't seen one in theaters in the name of preserving my own sanity and the safety of the other patrons.

The one movie I have walked out of was Pineapple Express, the trailer promised a decent stoner movie mixed with an action movie send up, instead we go... a really shitty stoner movie.

Finally throw my name in the hat of people who enjoyed FF: The Spirits Within, not gonna lie I was waiting for a battle tutorial followed by random encounters the entire movie lol :3

I hated Spiderman 3 is because it felt rushed. Not for the Emo Peter Parker. I found that funny.

I've watched that movie twice (Bought the Blu-Ray version) and I also love it.

Also, i love Advent Children, have watched that like 5-6 times.

Dancer in the Dark.

I really don't understand why critics seem to gush about how touching and beautiful and human this movie is. The plot is glurgy, the characters are either uninteresting or unrelatable, and the music numbers are awkward and forgettable.

The film's main issue was the number of villains - 2 would have been more than enough (in fact, having the New Goblin and the symbiote would have paralleled each other perfectly - Sandman is totally unnecessary), 3 tears it apart.

As for the emo-Parker thing, it's cheesy as hell, and doesn't fit Tobey Macguire or the film, but it's hardly a game-breaker.

So did I. I didn't think it was as good as Casino Royale, but it was far from bad.
Agreed.

And everyone seems to mistake fucked-up-and-doesn't-know-what-to-do-about-it guy for an emotionless drone.

Casino Royale is vastly better when you watch them side-by-side though.

I have a weird liking for stupid giant creature films. Even though if you look at them objectively they are all pretty much rubbish I still enjoyed things like Anaconda, Deep Blue Sea, Lake Placid, Ticks and Frankenfish (yeah I only watched it for the title, I won't lie). I know I'm not the only one, because of the obsession with megashark vs Giant Octopus, but a lot of people utterly hate those films which I think is odd because they never try to be anything clever so why expect anything more than harmless, over the top, poorly acted yet entertaining films?

I would have posted this as my answer to the thread, but I was ninja'd... Anyway, I have three main reasons that I think are the reasons people didn't like the film when it was released in the West. Bearing in mind that when it was released over here it was a pretty solid effort by Square Pictures to try and appeal to the mainstream audience and actually make a well-received mainstream film for the West.

1. The Uncanny Valley. Which is odd, because I have that film on DVD and I've seen it loads, and the characters have never once looked to me like they belong in the valley. They actually look like pretty realistic and well-designed CGI characters to me. Not creepy at all.

2. The 'Final Fantasy' tag. That alienated fans of the series who were pissed off to find it was set on Earth (albeit in the future) and didn't have any major links (at least, not the 'right' sort of links, like Moogles and Chocobos) to the games. It also alienated non-series-fans who felt it was more aimed at those who had played the games and enjoyed them, despite that not being true at all.

3. The fact that it's anime. Like it or not, unless you're aiming something at kids and it has the name 'Pokemon' or 'Digimon' somewhere in the title, it's not going to be successful in the Western film industry. A sad fact, but true, at least when FF: The Spirits Within was released. It's getting a bit better now with films like Ponyo and the like getting a better approach and marketing from the West, but there's still a long way to go, and anime is still generally seen as the domain of nerds and geeks. I can't even persuade my brother to watch any anime because he thinks it's really geeky, even though I've explained loads of times that watching anime is no different to him watching The Simpsons or Family Guy. They're both animated shows from a different country, after all (we're from the UK, for the record), the only difference is the style of art. He just doesn't care...

So yeah, those are the three main reasons I can think of. Sadly, when combined they led to a very lacklustre performance and set of reviews in the West, and the downfall of Square's film division (thus helping make their subsequent merger with Enix all the more vital for the company's survival). It's a shame, because it was a genuinely good film. It was simply a bit too ahead of it's time. Maybe when something similar is released in a few years, by that point anime will have found a much wider acceptance in the Western film industry, and maybe then we won't see such gems being heralded as a load of crap like this one was.

The first point is the only reason I would accept, and even then I don't see it. I absolutely loved the animation. Not to mention James Woods (I'm a sucker for a well-voiced villain).

The second point, however, is really stupid. It's like arguing whether Han shot first or whether the Top at the end of Inception fell. Neither of those things matter. So Final Fantasy took place on Earth? Does that really matter? How many other franchises take place on Earth? No one seems to complain about that at all.

I think the worst reason I've heard is "all the main characters die, so its a bad movie." To which I responded, with two swift punches to the kids side for being an idiot.

Ditto on that. On the other end, I really liked "Waterworld" and "Postman". I also preferred "Wyatt Earp" over "Tombstone". (Hrmmm, I guess I have a Kevin Costner thing going)

Everyone pretty much seems to hate Indiana Jones Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls. I however, actually liked it a lot. I mean, I wouldn't own it on Blu-Ray, but given the chance I would definitely buy it on DVD. I really didn't see anything wrong with the film(except the whole refrigerator scene...you know the one).

Then again, I only watched all the Indie films about a week before seeing Crystal Skulls. But I find the Temple of Doom to be extremely boring. I fell asleep about 3 times watching it on 3 different occassions. Farthest I got was some mine cart fight or something. Defintely worse than Crystal skulls. Though the best film is either 1 or 3, I can never decide.

Another film would be District 9. I mean, it was good don't get me wrong. But everyone was saying how awesome of a film it was. I guess I hyped myself up too much, so thats really more my problem than the movie.

Finally, I like the Star Wars prequels, though I think Attack of the Clones was the worst out of all the films. Still think that the last 40 minutes or so or Revenge of the Sith were perfect.

I am similarly baffled. I enjoyed it more than Advent Children.

[small]I'm apparently weird for thinking FFIX was awesome too *shrug*.[/small]
Same here, I enjoyed it a lot and was really surprised at the response. The uncanny valley is overrated.

[small]And FFIX was the best 3D FF.[/small]

Alien 3 and 4. Most people seem to be at a consensus regarding them; they're bad. But I have never seen anything wrong with them.. then again, I just really like the Alien-universe.
