So here's the deal: I just came from the premiere of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale and I loved it. It's a wonderfully dark story about the "real Santa" and how he's not the jolly old man we all used to believe in when we were young. But anyway, it got me thinking about the Finnish film industry and how we're at sort of a disadvantage because of our obscure language which no sane person will ever bother to learn. And it's a shame really, since Rare Exports is so great, that most of you guys will propably never see it, only because it comes from a small, obscure country like Finland.

So I wanna know if you guys have had similar thoughts about your own countries and if there's a movie that you'd recommend.

Also, just out of curiosity, have you ever seen any Finnish films? If yes, did you like it?

De Lift. A horror flick from The Netherlands. It's a bout a killing elevator. 'Nough said.

There will be a movie coming out real soon for our Saint Nicholas tradition: Sint.

If you don't know what it's about, this is the short story:
Shorter story: It's like Christmas, but we get it twice. XD

Turks Fruit is considered to be a classic, but if you're a 'prudish American', don't watch it. All dutch films have a sex scene in one way or another.

i've heard good reviews on rare exports and had planned on seeing it
but prior to it i rarely watch any films that aren't british or american
(apart from the occassional oriental kung foo film or the occassional eastern european zombie/grindhouse movie)

but i'm english
and i'm not sure anywhere really cares all that much about our films
apart from ourselves
it's probably a taste thing
we enjoy our own brand of cinema
and every country is surely the same

I've actually been looking elsewhere for good movies recently because Hollywood movies are beginning to irritate me ¬_¬

My country is the UK, we our share of note worthy films and the few here and there that for some reason have attempted to replicate the Hollywood scene. In particular, I've seen some very interesting Portuguese horror films and I adore French films, especially French horror. I don't mind sub-titles, it doesnt bother me as much as it does other people, so I guess I'm more keen to watch foreign films as long as they at least have the sub titles. Recently I've been watching more and more chinese and thai movies though.

We in my country have a television channel just for Irish-language TV, but there aren't really any full movies made in Irish, probably because of lack of funds. Strangely, from what I've seen, all the films on that channel are french films subtitled into English.

Here's the first half of a short Irish film, subtitled of course:
It's got one of the most disturbing endings of a film I've ever seen. The rest can be found on Youtube.

This is a pretty good film, technically Irish, but I count it.
Just to piss off any angry Republic of Ireland citizens.
Besides, Film4 is British.

And as I recall this is a Finnish film that I'm really interested in seeing at some point.

Nope. I think most movies made in Finland is about young people drinking and swearing. It kinda gets old and I hate watching stuff like that. Just boring. Though Rare Exports does look good.

And I love Brittish comedy in general. Usually really funny stuff.

"La Cité de la Peur" (I don't think it has an English title although I'm fairly sure there's a sub version out there). Awesome film, one of my favorite ever.
It's about crimes being commited during the Cannes film festival, copying a B-movie film. One after an other, the projectionists are killed and the producer of the film takes it as a chance to promote the film. From there a lot of things happen ; there's an investigation going on and we follow the producer, the main actor and a bodyguard.
It's a humoristic film, with a lot of parody of famous films, weird jokes and such, brilliant.

And I can't think of a Finnish film I've seen.
