I'm English and some of the recommendations are good, but another if you like horror films with a bit of dark humour is Dog Soldiers. Squaddies out on a training mission get attacked by werewolves...
I've not seen a Finnish film, Although A good norweigan one i have seen is Dead Snow. Nazi zombies... whats not to like? Also A french film I can recommend is District 13. Plenty of action/martial arts/gun fights in it, Some films are good enough thst you can overlook the subtitles and just enjoy the spectacle..

Well, I'd say the Troll hunter was a good movie. I recommend it. I wish moviebob would review it.

Edit: And Flaaklypa grand prix is the shit.
And Kill Buljo.

Oh look, an English version.
I couldn't find an English version of this song, but it's just to great to ignore.
It's a Danish children/young adults' film famed for it's abundance of violence and profanities. And sexual references. And suicide scene.

Apparently The Italian Job was meant to be good since the entire population of the UK except me has seen it.

Haven't seen any finnish films, so reccomend one so I can download it.

From my country, El Secreto de Sus Ojos. It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Movie last year and it really deserved it. Other than that one, El Hijo de la Novia.

Yes, they're in Spanish (I'm from Argentina), but there are probably subs somewhere.

Dead Snow (Norway) It's got nazi zombies, true-blue horror and splatter-comedy all in the same movie. Of course, it's kind of a B movie, but being an A movie these days, from what I gather, is being overwrought drama, so fuck that noise.

Max Manus (Norway) Drama that tells the story of a norwegian saboteur that works against the germans. It uses the 40's in a way I quite like and examines what it means to sacrifice something to win something, and really depicts the title character masterfully.

Fritt vilt (AKA 'cold prey' (most ridiculous translation I ever heard) or 'Wild game' (much better)). Horror in the Jason tradition, but set in Norway. There's 3 movies this far, although I've only seen 1&2. From the looks of it, the quality has gone significantly downhill as it goes on, but the first movie is still a very thrilling take on the jason-horror-genre, and the end of the second movie satisfied me immensely when the heroine emptied a full auto-shotty into the killer's head at point blank range.

Serbian and Yugoslavian films: Underground, Black cat white cat, Lepa sela Lepo gore (pretty village, pretty flame), time of the gypsies, Ko to tamo peva (whos singing over there), Nicia zemlja (no-mans land)

Sweden only got crap films exept Smala Sussie (thin Sussie) so I only name that one.

So here's the deal: I just came from the premiere of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale and I loved it. It's a wonderfully dark story about the "real Santa" and how he's not the jolly old man we all used to believe in when we were young. But anyway, it got me thinking about the Finnish film industry and how we're at sort of a disadvantage because of our obscure language which no sane person will ever bother to learn. And it's a shame really, since Rare Exports is so great, that most of you guys will propably never see it, only because it comes from a small, obscure country like Finland.

So I wanna know if you guys have had similar thoughts about your own countries and if there's a movie that you'd recommend.

Also, just out of curiosity, have you ever seen any Finnish films? If yes, did you like it?
Now that i think about it, didnt Finland make some pretty awesome WW2 movies? I think i have heard that somewhere...

Here in Ireland we have Brendan Frasier and Cillian Murphy, they have been in movies such as: In Bruges, The Wind That Shakes The Barley and Breakfast On Pluto (which is an amazing movie)
EDIT: I meant Brendan Gleeson not Brendan Frasier.

I haven't seen it myself, so I don't know if it's good or not, but Popular Music From Vittula is from and set in Tornedalen (which is where I live).

Believe it or not, I would love to learn Finnish. I've always kind of liked Finland.

Anyways, I've never had this problem as I am from the U.S. We certainly don't have a shortage of movies.

I´m going to recommend two very different films from Portugal. The first is recommended if you like movies like "Mystic River", the second one i´d recommend if you dig Tarantino and Rodriguez movies.

First a dramatic movie about a father (Mario) searching for his missing daughter, Alice. Mario creates an illegal video surveillance network all over Lisbon, watching hours and hours of footage every day in high speed, expecting to catch a glimpse of his little girl. It´s a "man on a mission" movie, but told in a minimalistic way with little dialogue. The breathtaking performances from the leading actors, the amazing photography and the fantastic soundtrack makes this my favourite portuguese movie.

Now, while i do think "Alice" is great, it might be a bit too depressing for some people. That´s why i´ll also recommend "A Arte de Roubar" (The Art of Stealing), a fun movie that tells the story of two amateur thieves who are hired to steal an extremely valuable Van Gogh painting from the abandoned farm of an Argentinian countess. I wish they had a better trailer, but i guess this´ll have to do.
