You know the US was never actually pro-Christian in its constitution, right?
There has been a lot of presidents claiming it was a Christian nation, yeah, but simply put, they were retarded.

Anyhow, I don't doubt an interesting concept could be made from atheism, I just don't know how. Atheism isn't in any way a collection of beliefs, so I guess there isn't as much to say when it comes to that.
So the fact that Presidents are traditionally sworn in with their hand on the Bible and that the Supreme court of the US has the Ten Commandments displayed outside of it (along with a fairly large number of Americans being Christian and every President claiming to be Christian) wouldn't lead one to a fair conclusion that the US is (for all intents and purposes) a Christian nation? ('God bless America' and what not)

And just because there isn't a standardised belief or deity behind Athiesm and Agnosticism doesn't mean that it'd be ridiculously hard to write a narrative for it, there are plenty of subjects you could write about and make a narrative to in relation to them (the rising acceptance of Athiesm and secularisation over our society's history and the stigmatisation that Athiests still face in certain areas are a couple that come to mind immediately).

I will admit I have a bit of a cynical view when it comes to how Athiesm is represented in mainstream media because of the somewhat strawman representation of it being a shorthand for ' bitter, spiteful arsehole' (kinda like claiming you have Asperger's on the internet).

well you could claim that all movies that don't show a presence of any religious statemant at all are atheist. But truth be told, isn't atheism a bit boring, that we just rot and the we all end up dieing in the end because the world can't last forever. I would rather believe there is something out there then believe nothing at all, because otherwise that would be depressing and boring.
Thay's depressing. Living in hopes of afterlife istead of this life...

Not a film, but in Dexter he mentions how religion is comforting, but he couldn't believe it because of what he knows.

This is the link to the church I go to. I encourage people to watch some of the services, they are pretty good.

Em Star Wars and stuff like that and Star Gate have basically said Atheism is true if you think about it. Seriously sit and think about the movies/show although this is much more for Star Gate than Star Wars. They basically make out that there is no god but there are higher beings and an afterlife. You can count those as gods but they continually refute them as not being gods.
Let me just say, that as an atheist, I don't see StarGate or Starwars to be atheist shows at all. Both feature religion prominently. Stargate, in the form of ascension, and Star Wars with its all powerful force :)

Perhaps not an atheist show, but Mal from Firefly regularly shows open disdain for religion.
Also, Bones, stars an openly atheist character, although the writers often like to teach her a "lesson."

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Thor.

The Gods aren't Gods. They're just super-long-living aliens with super engineering and awesome, awesome armor and weapons.

This movie "The Ledge" came to mind. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1535970/ It came out this year and deals with issues of being an Atheist and dealing with how people in a dominant Christian society view them and treat them. I have not had the chance to see it yet, since it only came out in a few cities, but it looks very interesting.

I can think of some TV shows that at least bring the concepts of Atheism into their stories. House M.D., granted Dr. House is an abrasive character. Full Metal Alchemist has an almost entirely Atheist cast of characters and the first episode deals with debunking a religion that's exploiting the local people. It's easier to find Atheist characters where their viewpoints help shape how they choose their action in the story, rather then finding a movie specifically about Atheism. Some poles have suggested that Atheism is on the rise, so maybe as demographics change we'll see more stories and characters dealing with the subject.

Depending how you look at them Black Death and Kingdom of Heaven are as close as you'll get to a medieval themed movie favoring atheism or at least anti-Christian views.

How about stargate? The gods turned out to be aliens . . and yes, other people turned sorta god like, but they didn't create us, don't care about us, and stop any other higher being from helping or hurting us . . . so that's certainly not the classical "god" concept.

Bill Maher's film, though I forget the name?

Badly researched in places, but quite a fun little romp, with a few good points.

Contact. Pretty much.

The only one that comes to mind at the moment.
I'm impressed you came up with this. It's a good find, but the funny thing is that the book on which the movie was based (by Carl Sagan) actually implies the opposite. It turns out that a creator of some kind has hidden a secret code in the digits of pi, and they actually end up repeating after the 10^x digit. Very good book, I highly recommend it...

Paul also has an atheist point of view.
I loved that movie. It was one I actually wanted to watch a second time after I had finished it . . which I can't say for many other movies, if any in fact.

OT: Another one, The Ledge, came out earlier this year. I just looked it up, it seemed to only have a limited release, although the audiences that saw it seemed to like it.

Hmm... well films that don't really mention religion are quite common. One that actually promoted atheism would be have more interesting results.
In America and a fair few other places there would probably be a gigantic shitstorm.

In England, everyone would just be like 'no shit sherlock, of course there's no God.'

Movies, I don't really know of any.

I know of books that are quite atheistic, and in Crysis 2 there is a piece of dialogue that is clearly atheistic:

"Will there been an afterlife, I wonder? Choirs of angels? Or a fiery pit? One unlearns these falsehoods over time, but the child who learnt to fear hell is never really gone. To tell the truth, I think I had enough of afterlives as it is - this one has been pretty purgatorial. Almost fifty years floating in supercooled jelly like some medical specimen, thoughts creeping like rats through cramped silicon corridors of machines trapped behind video screens and camera systems. Never sleeping, never resting, never ceasing to think about the world no longer belong to. No, if this is a taste of the afterlife, I think simple oblivion will do nicely."

The best one I've seen is called "The Sunset Limited".
The movie has a cast of 2 characters who sit in one room and discuss life.
If you like movies that want to make you think, see this one.
You might think it's all religious propaganda (which I thought at first) but it's far more complicated than that.

Atheism isn't boring unless you drop the notion that your existence is what makes life interesting, which is inherently arrogant. You need magic superheroes in the sky and an endless party with Jesus to validate existence? Lame. What is the point of fearing death? There is nothing you can do about it anyways.

Before and after humans life will continue. I for one find it amazing that over time single celled creatures evolved into what we see now. All of this happened by absorbing energy from the sun. A forest is impressive, as is the ruthless efficiency of a predatory creature. Something dies, something eats it, everything gets used. Contemplate the weird stuff in the universe we'll never see. I respect life for continuing against the odds time and time again.

Following people who claim they know what happens when we die is just dumb. Have they ever been dead? No? Gee, but they read a book! A big one! Wowee! It's all people looking for an easy, and completely unfounded, way to dominate others. Religion is for leeches. Prayer is a nice way of doing nothing and pretending you did something.

the hitch hiker's guide. well the books anyway, the movie was a bit iffy.
The Hitch Hiker's Guide had god living in a shack with his cat on a secret planet, remember? They just didn't call him that.
