I just thought of something. There have been several films saying that god and the devil, heaven and hell exist, and no one has batted an eye.

But I wondered, have there been any movies saying that atheism is right? That there are no gods or anything supernatural?

Maybe there have, and I just haven't seen them. If that's the case, then please enlighten me.

And how would that film turn out?

"There is no god."

"Well shit."

Roll credits.

Oscar material right there.

Man From Earth is probably the closest I've seen.

But the director was a bit of a dick with his opinion though.
I hate it when movies shoehorn in religion, the movie would've been brilliant if it hadn't been for that part...

But if Chuck Norris would be able to defeat the gods, what would that make Chuck Norris?

Contact. Pretty much.

The only one that comes to mind at the moment.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose flirted with the idea, but left it "ambigious."

That's somewhat of a difficult question. Have there been films which are as ham-handed and obvious in their denial of Christianity as there are films which have been ham-handed and obvious in their support of it? Probably, but none come to mind. That said, I would say that there are actually a great many films which lack the suggestion of any God playing a role. That is to say that in the context of many films, the creators probably did not feel like there was a God, unlike the "pro-Christian" films, however, they don't have to be overt in their message, in fact, they are often so subtle that it's difficult to notice.

The only one that comes directly to mind is The Golden Compass, though that's not as explicitly atheist as the novels/sequel novels.

You could also sort of argue for I <3 Huckabees as an Atheistic Film as Existentialism is pretty much an atheistic ideology.

Oh and as Nulmas stated, Paul is kind of atheistic, though generally it's more "Pro-Evolution/Anti-Creationism" than explicitly about an atheistic world view.

Not directly. I've noticed movies set in future usually don't show any kind of religious tradition but that's probably just to avoid whatever issues would come up from that. But I can't think of any direct movies that say atheism is right.

Em Star Wars and stuff like that and Star Gate have basically said Atheism is true if you think about it. Seriously sit and think about the movies/show although this is much more for Star Gate than Star Wars. They basically make out that there is no god but there are higher beings and an afterlife. You can count those as gods but they continually refute them as not being gods.

well you could claim that all movies that don't show a presence of any religious statemant at all are atheist. But truth be told, isn't atheism a bit boring, that we just rot and the we all end up dieing in the end because the world can't last forever. I would rather believe there is something out there then believe nothing at all, because otherwise that would be depressing and boring.

Paul comes to mind, though less of an straight ahead atheist view, and more of a pro evolution view.

My sentiments exactly when I read the title of this thread. Gold star for you.

Ricky Gervais' "The Invention of Lying" comes to mind as a straight atheistic movie. And Kevin Smith's "Dogma" didn't come off as atheist, but it tackles the issue on how the catholic church is treated more like corporation than a place of faith.

Only the incompetent characters in Troy show any kind of faith in the gods at all. While many of the heroes defile their temples or openly criticize them. Which kinda bothered me because I know that the poem couldn't be further from atheist. I know that pretty much everything was changed for the movie. But, that one really bothered me and I don't know why.

you just beat me to it with the invention of lying!

Honestly I haven't watched too many movies but if you're looking for a good "Atheist" one, the invention of lying might be right up your ally
