I was reading this article today:

http://www.wedolists.com/2010/07/top-10-movies-you-like-if-you?re-a-first-year-philosophy-student/

It makes some interesting points about people who think they aren't part of "the herd", but actually are a "herd" unto themselves.

"these people are name droppers, and most likely 1st year philosophy students. They also have to like certain movies, and if they don?t they become ostracized by the philosophy herd who require you to like movies that appear ?deep? and ?radical?. "

Can anyone else think of other Philosophy related movies? Personally, I would have added "Pi" and "Cube" to this list.

Do the Matrix sequels count as well or are they just for the masses?

Waking life is great, I really enjoyed it first time I saw it because it was a total surprise, but its still great re-watching it, a lot of the philosophy is obfuscated and stylised though but its a definite work of art which give it full licence in this respect IMO.

In all seriousness though, check out Revolver. Although that may be more interesting to psych majors.

Tarantino went way downhill after those Grindhouse Terror movies.
Inglorious basterds was good.

OT:The article was pretty funny, but I can't come up with any movies that would fit with that list.

just the first one.

the first one explores the question, "would it be better to live fake world,a lie and be happy or live in the real world, know the truth which will leave you beyond devastated"

hence the blue pill and the red pill choice that was given to Mr Andersen aka Neo

the rest of sequels are just mumbo jumbo bs

Has anyone ever really watched and paid attention to Fargo? I mean that movie actually struck me a bit.I dont know if its really at home here but wow, I mean could truly feel this guys life just absolutely falling apart. Now I'll leave this to the labelers as to whether or not this movie could be classified as psychological or philosophical.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about Inglorious Bastards (from people who I trust), but then again, I hear good stuff about every single Tarantino Movie. Ebert thinks that guy is a god. He'd give him four out of four stars for him releasing a video of himself farting for 3 hours.

I think 'Blade Runner' should probably be there.
Another movie I've only just watched recently and am embarrassed to say so. I was pretty impressed though. Though apparently I am in the minority

Haha, it's a question that everyone from Plato to Descartes has confronted. As for the sequels, I guess the slow motion was cool.

Be happy philosophy students only need to watch handful of movies. As sociology student, i had a time when i felt i need to watch every movie just to better understand the trends in society. After first 3 random Hollywood action flicks i decided it's not worth my time, society is composed mostly from drooling idiots, and theory books suddenly started to be much more interesting.

Also the list lacks Rosmary's Baby.
