Eraserhead (mostly because you'll have no fucking clue what's going on and so can inherently pull some sort of great philosophical BS out of it).

Wings of Desire (nature of Angels, immortality, etc etc)

The Man from Earth (the whole thing is just one big philosophy discussion, but I found it very, very interesting)

I was reading this article today:

http://www.wedolists.com/2010/07/top-10-movies-you-like-if-you?re-a-first-year-philosophy-student/

It makes some interesting points about people who think they aren't part of "the herd", but actually are a "herd" unto themselves.

"these people are name droppers, and most likely 1st year philosophy students. They also have to like certain movies, and if they don?t they become ostracized by the philosophy herd who require you to like movies that appear ?deep? and ?radical?. "

Can anyone else think of other Philosophy related movies? Personally, I would have added "Pi" and "Cube" to this list.
Lol, you could change the title of that article to, top 10 movies you like if you do drugs. Some of these really aren't too good though. I'm surprised they didn't have The Fountain or Ink on that list.

Tarantino went way downhill after those Grindhouse Terror movies.
Inglorious basterds was good.

OT:The article was pretty funny, but I can't come up with any movies that would fit with that list.
I've heard a lot of good stuff about Inglorious Bastards (from people who I trust), but then again, I hear good stuff about every single Tarantino Movie. Ebert thinks that guy is a god. He'd give him four out of four stars for him releasing a video of himself farting for 3 hours.
Inglorious Bastards is pretty good.

And this is coming from a guy who thinks Tarantino hasn't made anything good since Pulp Fiction.

Every filmaker has one of those, George lucas calls his prequels.

Edit: For some reason it didn't show up when I first posted, so I thought I accidentally hit the back button when I was about to post.

2001 doesn't have any real philosophical agenda that I ever noticed. It's movie that film majors are probably compelled to like but not philosophy majors.

Blade Runner has a philosophical axe to grind, and although there are legitimate reasons to love it you probably would face some serious disapproval if you told your philosophy buddies you thought it was crap. Although it's a personal fave of mine, I suppose you'd have to include "Impostor" under that argument as well.

Why is Eraserhead not there?
Because this list is for the first year philosophy students. The drooling morons who don't have a single bit of class in their body and think taking philosophy will let them do something other than teach philosophy.
Wow, that's abit of a harsh over generalization wouldn't you say? I agree that the kiddies who take a philosophy course so they can feel that they're just as smart as Nietzsche, and impress college chicks with their smart taste in movies are annoying as hell.

But (and correct if I'm wrong) it seems like you're lumping all philosophy students together as horrible mouth breathers. And the idea that the only valid reason to take philosophy courses is so that you can get a job teaching philosophy is depressing. Philosophy along with science is our windows into truly understanding the world (obviously on two different levels).

Another movie I've only just watched recently and am embarrassed to say so. I was pretty impressed though. Though apparently I am in the minority
Takes a while to get your head around that movie, doesn't it? To me, it's just this amazing sumptious visual feast.

Would you care to explain you reasons why?

I understand that the film somewhat explores some important questions however personally it's not the best of Philip K. Dick's work (film conversions)

Minority Report or A Scanner Darkly held better values towards philosophy imo( have'nt seen/read all of Philip K. Dick's work yet..)

I saw Inception last night, Wow, amazing. Great psychological/philosophical movie.
Yea this.

Also, Blade Runner, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, The Machinist, and Black Dynamite (that movie is plain awesome for everyone!)

In my Intro to Philosophy class, we watched Dexter, Chuck, Watchmen, and quite a few other movies and shows. I think Inception will become a philosophy favorite pretty quick though.

I guess the article is right. We actually read books in my philosophy class. (Not knocking you, but the class).

The Matrix! I fuckin' knew it!

Anyway, I thought Memento was pretty fucking awesome. But then again, I have a strange fascination for memory loss, anterograde amnesia, korsakoffs, et cetera.

My personal pick would indeed be the Fountain - though it's hardly philosophical. It's get you thinking, but it gets you thinking about the movie, not philosophical questions. It's a true work of art though.

I agree dude. I was pretty taken by the visceral plausibility of the urban world created for that film. Nice
