Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Its cinematography is amazingly beautiful, the fight choreography is without equal, and the love story is possibly the most touching I've ever seen in a film.

2001: A Space Odyssey. Weird as all hell, and one of the most impenetrable films of all time, but it's worth seeing it because there is genuinely nothing else quite like it. Plus, it's one of the depressingly few films to truly embrace the fact that they're working in a visual medium.

Brazil, Kind Hearts & Coronets and The Ladykillers (The original, not the godawful Tom Hanks remake).

Since Shawshank was already mentioned, I'll add Memento and American Beauty.
I'll throw my ballot in with both of those - they're two of my favorite films.

On top of those, I'll add:

Himmel Uber Berlin (aka Wings of Desire)
A Taste of Cherry.
and
The Pianist

Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, and if you like war movies, Apocalypse Now Redux, I think Redux is better, I mean yeah some of the bits it adds are crap but I like how it slows down the whole journey up the river, heightens the suspense :D

It's been said, but it has to be said again, the shawshank redemption.

Come on, that scene is simply one of the most iconic out there in my mind.

I want to see the latest Michael Caine movie too. It intrigues me.
Inception?

OT: Most of the big ones have already been said so I'm just going to add Inglorious Basterds

I might be repeating myself here slightly but...Fight Club...as "we are all part of the same decaying organic matter, all part of the same compost heap".

The Godfather, just because it's awesome, but, if anyone has a passing interest in science fiction, I, like people above me, would recommend Moon; truely one of the hidden gems of the last decade!
I can't believe it took 32 posts for someone to mention the greatest film of all time (The Godfather). Well done CrazT, you have brought back some faith in humanity. <3

As for the rest of you, shame on you! No mention of Don Corleone in your lists.

Really?

EDIT: Wait, all the movies, or just the first?
"Really?"
Well, yeah.
The Saw , for me, is the only movie i find disgusting and i have seen Antichrist and Begotten and i find them laughable.
"Wait, all the movies, or just the first?"
The thread says "Movies to see before you die".

As opposed to after you die, you mean? Well, all of them I guess. In Heaven there's no movie theater, and in Hell they just show Uwe Boll movies.
Hah! Snap!

OT: I'd have to say The Big Lebowski, although it's already mentioned.
Well, that and The Crow AND THE EARLY ONE OF THAT MIND YOU! (1994) The remake was horrible!
... Also The Green Mile.
