I'm going to chuck some martial arts movies in there since nobody seems to be mentioning them much atm:

Ong Bak
Drunken Master
Fearless
Hero
Snake in the Eagle's Shadow
Fist of Fury (way better than enter the dragon for my money)

Also I'm going to say

The Crow
Nightmare on Elm Street (original)
The Exorcist
Ichi the Killer (for sheer screwed-upness)
Dusk Till Dawn
Watchmen

There are loads of others but I either can't think of them or others have said them.

2001: A Space Odysey. You will want to kill youself with the pacing but it is almost the film that every other sci fi film is based off of. Then Go watch Moon as a palet cleanser.

Edited to add, you should also see the original Dead series (night, dawn, day) if only to understand what started the whole zombie thing. The first Dawn of the Dead (well, and Night to a certain extent) was one heck of a satire as well.

If nobody has suggested it yet, Fritz Langs "Metropolis" is an absolute MUST.
And if you're into that sort of thing, the modern anime version is pretty good too.

Tonight I am going to watch High Fiedelity. I have heard that it is one of the iconic 80s Cusack films and a must watch, we shall see. I did like Grosse Point Blanke and it is by the same crew so it might be worth something.

My only issue is that I have noticed the John Cusack always plays the same darn character. 2012 might as well have been Say Anything, the sequel.

Yet again, both Alien and Aliens. Seriously, those two movies were badass. Also, though, the again-previously-noted 12 Angry Men, and of course Casablanca.

And possibly Pixar's WALL-E. I am still shocked by how good that movie was.
I liked "Up" a lot

Wow so many good movies were mentioned.....
Here's my contribution-
The Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, Back to the Future trilogy, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Brick, The Warriors, Pitch Black, works of Monty Python, Braveheart, Crazy Heart, Fanboys....could probably name a lot more but I'll leave that to others.

There are 2 versions of Alien 3, the Theatrical version & the assembly cut. The assembly cut is a lot longer and strangely better. I watched the that one first and I'd probably recommend that

The Blade trilogy is definitely worth watching and I'll say Grease just cuz it's a classic.

Boondock Saints and Pulp Fiction, for sure. And Forrest Gump.

EDIT: Let's toss in the Mad Max movies for good measure.

American Beauty
Sweeney Todd
Underworld (1 at least, 2 and 3 if you REALLY need the disappointment)
A Knights Tale
Labyrinth (kids movie, but GREAT)
Rent (It's a great movie, if a bit sad, have to see it at least once)
There are quite a few more, but they've been said already, like Fight Club, The Dark Knight, Donnie Darko, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The Matrix, etc.

But most importantly, don't ever EVER YOU HEAR ME?!? DON'T EVER WATCH TRANSFORMERS 2!
