20 30 40. It's a Taiwanese drama about three women. The title numbers is their respective ages. It tells the story of their different lives, and the best thing is, they're three different stories that don't intersect except for very briefly.

Hmmm, well, Oldboy is a kickass Japanese movie about a man who gets kidnapped and imprisoned for over a decade without being told why, only to be suddenly released and he has to find out why it happened to him.

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gex2NXTuL4

Trilogy: One, Two, Three is a trilogy of French films that are, umm, hard to explain, but here goes.

One is a thriller about a political bomber on the run after he escaped from prision. Two is a comedy about a man who becomes increasingly paranoid about his health and whether the mafia are stalking him. Three is a melodrama about a police officer who has a girlfrind on drugs.

All three are, as you can see, different stories, but interact with each other in interesting ways. It's pretty cool. There was a litte one screen cinema near where I used to live that would show foreign films. I remember going in there thinking "Ohh, french comedy eh? This'll be as funny as a kick in the nuts, no doubt." Ended up crying with laughter by the end though.

(Trying to find a trailer for an obscure french film is a pita, so http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucas_Belvaux the three films are the 2002 ones.)

If you're into horror, I'd recommend "A Tale of Two Sisters". About two sisters coming home after spending years in an asylum after witnessing their mothers death, only to start having strange visions, and they can't tell if they're real or just going slowly mad. It's scary as hell.

And if you're into movies so unbelievably terrible that you can't stop watching them, DNA is like the alpha/omega of hilariously awful sci-fi. Golden Ninja Warrior/Ultimate Ninja/Ninja Terminator, if terrible kungfu movies are more your thing. :)

Holy crap, you are the first person I have ever "met" who has seen Stay Alive (it had the same name here in America) other than the people I saw it with.

Korean movie, not Japanese. Anyway, it is really good and has one of my favourite fight scenes (the hallway scene).

Not to nipick but it was a Korean film, part of a trilogy by Park Chan Wook. I'd recommend checking out all 3, and pretty much anything else this guy has directed.

"The Man from Earth". It's my favorite movie, and it's amazing, low budget but amazing.

Simon [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393775/]. Very very Dutch, but Jesus man, it's one of the best films I've ever seen.

Mine is a famous movie but non of my friends seem to have seen it. Donnie Darko. Takes a while to understand but it's awesome!
I'll probably have to watch that again, because I saw it a while ago and remember not being particularly interested...

That trailer doesn't really do it justice. Basically, it wants to be an educational kids' film but only really succeeds in being trippy as fuck. I used to love it as a kid, which I guess maybe explains why I'm so messed up now... =P
Damn... I watched that film a lot as a kid. It was educational, I thought, though more in a way of life-learning for kids than how I think it meant to.

OT: Copenhagen didn't get a theatrical release, I don't think, and I had to import my DVD... still not quite as good as the stage show, but a good film regardless.

Life Story is one that I watched quite a lot while I was in school (and by that I mean while at school, I could call it a biology lesson and not do anything).

Twilight Samurai is a poignant Japanese film that I saw that's actually a very good portrayal of the samurai class towards the end of the Shogunate.

Wouldn't say I 'loved' it, but Freeze Frame was really good. ITV run it occasionally, and it's got Lee Evans (comedian) in a straight role, so give it a watch when you can - thoroughly worth it.

Battle Royal.
it got a sequel but it felt a bit to army-i for me.
great films. even though they've been out for ages they're really expensive to buy.

I'll suggest Creep, great British horror film which, though it does suffer from a few 'what they heel are you doing' moments, it's really...creepy

I recently, I found a movie on the Netflix Instant section called "Wristcutters: A Love Story". Let me tell you, I have no idea why I had never heard of that movie, but it is GREAT! I'm not going to spoil the plot, but you guys should check it out!

So, what movies do you love and think are great that probably nobody has ever heard of before?
Hah! I was just going to post that very film. Thread refuted.

I really enjoyed the French animated film "Persepolis," and the Korean film "Mother." No one has really seen those, but I highly recommended them.
