They're books of course, but everything about the Eragon/Inheritence series screams with every sentence that Christopher Paolini is a gamer and not a writer. The books would actually have made for a pretty decent video games, assuming the dialogue were all skippable or written by someone else, and the basic ideas were implemented well.
They did make a movie, but in a catastrophic failure of film-making it failed the seemingly simple task of surpassing the source material, and I'm certain that "The movie; the game" is terrible, so they don't count.
