What films did you see recently, fully expecting to say "What the fuck is this?" halfway through, only to find that, not only was the film watchable, but it was bloody good too.

For me, it was The Book Of Eli. I got given a Blu-Ray of it for Christmas, along with The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (Which I had already seen at release, and is one of my favourite films). Everything about it seemed awful from the case, leading me to believe that it was another bland, generic wandering-man action film, but what I got was a deep, involving and, at the end, heartwrenching story. I thought it was absolutely, undeniably, brilliant.

Oh, there are lots, but the one that comes to mind is Mulan. I saw it for the first time this year. The opening "comedy" was just like, ehhh, and I thought "I'm not going to like this," but I actually found the film really endearing, and I could feel it grow on me as I was watching it, and, ultimately, I really enjoyed it.

Tron: Legacy. I was expecting it to be bad but I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't brilliant mind, but it did better than I hoped.

Maybe it was just Olivia Wilde? Hmm....

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

I was even preparing a scathing line for the review, in which I say that the most interesting part about the movie was that one of the actors is named Mark Webber (as in, Mark Webber, F1 Red Bull Racing, get it?).

Really, it wasn't supposed to appeal to me at all, seeing how I am not a fant of anime or old games.

Turns out the movie was really good.

Avatar, although I still haven't sat down to actually watch it.

I'm still in that "I hate fish, but I've never eaten one" mindset, I guess.

The Hangover. It looked like one of those comedies where all the funny bits were in the trailer and the rest of it would either be fart jokes or jokes that would get overused and would already be unfunny. Turns out, it's one of the best comedies in years!

The Twilight film; don't get me wrong it's shit but nowhere near as bad as I was expecting.

OH CRAP, how did I forget, the Deathnote film...like holy caca(Spawn reference) I was so surprised in how good it was. Shame I can't watch the second one as that requires me to borrow it off someone...

That's exactly what I thought. I thought it was going to be really stupid like Step Brothers were the plot really doesn't make sense and people do random crap that just makes me tilt my head and say "aren't you supposed to drunk to be able to do that without shame?"

But Hangover ended up turning out awesome! So hilarious! I wish I could watch it now.

Agreed. From all the trailers about Scott Pilgrim I saw, it looked to me like a bunch of hipsters and indie douchebags dealing with cheesy relationship problems.

Even though it ended up being pretty much that, I actually really enjoyed the stylized presentation of it all.

I though Avatar looked awful from the previews, but I quite enjoyed it. It might have been because my expectations were so low.

I thought that "The Book of Eli" would suck, too.

Then came the greatest old married couple EVER.

Piranha 3-D: thought it would be dumb... and it was dumb... but fun dumb.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World: thought it was silly and immature, turned out to be awesome.

Monsters: after Movie Bob's scathingly horrible opinion of it, I was surprised to end up liking it.

Megamind: A Dreamworks animation movie that didn't suck? Amazing.

That's all I can think of right now...
