Don't all disc drives do this?

I mean, it's kind of common fucking sense not to move your console when it has a fragile object that's in a centerfuge of lasers and heat! That's like saying, DONT SPILL YOUR COFFEE! IT'S HAWT!

Why could you want to move your console while it's on? Doesn't the original xbox 360 have this same problem? It's not a big deal if you have an IQ over 6.

This is a rule for pretty much any disc player that doesn't require you to snap the disc onto the spindle (think Walkman CD players, PS2 Slims, or laptops). The sticker is there as an idiot-warning because people are screaming for doing dumb stuff like moving their consoles while they're on. Now if you move it very very slowly, you can get away with it, but you have to be super-careful.

Rather than have people whining about their borked copies of Hello Kitty Island Adventure, apparently Microsoft thought it was a good idea to use the sticker instead. This seems to have backfired.

Of course they could have used the snap-spindle design, but this requires access to a lot of inner console surface area (great for kids with food, pocket change, etc) or the design used in laptops, both of which would sacrifice precious reliability. A sticker is bad press for a little while, hosed drives are worse.

If you think tipping your console over while your disk spins several thousand times per minute inside it is a good idea, then congratulations - you're an idiot.

Pick which way your console is gonna sit and stick with that. If you're gonna stand it up, prop it against something so it doesn't fall over.

No one should expect the disc to withstand that kind of punishment. Would you tip your PC tower case over while a disc was running? Would you throw your laptop around while a disc was running?

There's no denying that the 360 was not the best design ever (RRoD, E74, etc), but there's a pretty distinct line here between "bad design" and "why do you need this, anyway?" Stop blaming Microsoft's design of the console for your inability to take care of your electronics.

while its stupid to move a system with it on and reading the disk over all, Microsoft fudging on hardware doesn't surprise me at all, i kinda expect it really. they should really hire some one, that knows how to build the hardware thus fix the issues, but that would imply they care about their customers, an I'm pretty sure they don't

It's a major flaw.

Given, every system has that flaw, but in differing levels of severity. I mean I busted up a version of Conan (Thank God) in my PS3 by me planting it amongst a pile of refuse.

If you can't even move it from vertical to horizontal or vice-versa while it's playing something, then there's a bit of a problem with the development and testing team of Microsoft.

DAMN that thing look sexy. I want one now.

Anyway, okay. Who cares? You really shouldn't do it even if it put hte disc in a pillow when you moved it.

Hang on now, before the rest of the world decides that moving the console is a bad idea and common sense would dictate otherwise, lemme ask a few questions.

What happens if you have your 360 upright and you happen to have an earthquake? Southern California's had a couple of decent quakes recently. Strong enough to make my entire house shake, including my computer desk. What would have happened if I'd been playing my cousin's 360 (he's just a couple houses down) and this happened, causing the 360 to rock slightly? Does this instantly mean we've just screwed ourselves over and it's our fault?

If anything I'd say it was designing a console to stand upright that was stupid, if you're going to leave a critical design flaw like that in. The old CD players and original PS1 (and later slim PS2) had this nice feature called "holding the disc in place" and spinning it that way. You didn't run the risk of it getting eaten then, because the console held it in place. Hence you could actively walk around with a CD player and nothing bad would happen.

I still wonder why the newer consoles don't have a feature like this.

Seriously guys... why are you picking up and moving your 360? An earthquake start and the only thing you can do is immediately pick and up and book it?

99.9% of gamers don't move their Xbox 360 while playing anyway. The other 0.01% however...

Apparently, this issue can be resolved by simply installing a small piece of foam near the laser, stopping the disk from smashing it's self to pieces on said laser.

Same is true for the old 360s.

Like I bought my 360 for Fallout 3, I didn't know you shouldn't stand them up cause they always show them that way in the adds. It barley got moved at all, I think someone just walked by too heavy. It pretty much burned a circle in the disk and I had to buy a new one.
