Whatever happened to Vanguard? The MMORPG that SOE released for hardcore gamers complainging EQII was too easy? I remember it had this fanfare of a launch and then... nothing. Mind you, there were a whole bunch of MMO's released around that time too, most of which seem to be fading into obscurity. Age of Conan? Is that still alive?

Transformers: WFC, had so much potential to contend with the likes of COD and Halo, but it just didn't take off =\ people still play it, but there is never 1000 people on at one time =\
Oh my lord that game is (was?) amazing, I'd still be playin it if it had a community... Ok now I'm actually sad thinking about how fun that game was...
Speaking of, does anyone know how many copies Brink sold?
Hey dude don't worry, people still play it and you can still find games, it's just the counter at the top (which shows how many people are online) is never over 1000 at one time.

I can still get in games and in my opinion it is STILL the best online game ever.

Any game that gets old enough dies.

Usually when a company elects to give the game proper support after release it ends up enjoying a long, healthy post-release life.

Take for example, Starcraft and Diablo.

Mostly older games that are dead, or just unsuccessful ones compared to other games

e.g The Outfit
Sniper Ghost Warrior

The only 2 i could think of on the spot

L4D. The first and second. Guitar Hero. And Alien vs Predator. Left it searching for a match for ten minutes. Never found one.

In my opinion, Alien Swarm... It was great when it first came out everyone got it (cuz it's free) but then it got... obscenely repetitive.
I didn't want to go through the process of downloading all the custom made map packs... and so there were only 7 maps. And unless valve decided to update it, it's stuck like that
I doubt that valve will, alien swarm was released as a platform for developers, which was the only reason it was free. They make a lot of money from games that were originally mods. I.E. Killing Floor, and Dino D-day.
Neither of those are Valve properties. Next time try Counter Strike and Team Fortress.
They are distributed exclusively via steam. Valve takes a portion of all of those sales and makes tons off of it. Dino D-day is also based on the source engine which is owned by valve, which could affect what percentage of income valve gets from that game.

Valve isn't the kind of company that wants to own everything that a mod team created.

ChromeHOUNDS. A couple of years ago,the boys ast SEGA shut down the servers.

ChromeHOUNDS was a mech game, where teamwork was at the core. I've actualy heard the phrase "Hunt like a pack or die like a dog" thrown around a lot. Gameplay was divided into six Role Types; Heavy Gunner (Artillery),Tactics Commander (Intel Relay),Scout (Intel Gathering,Hit and Run),Defender (CQB),Soldier (Average),Sniper (Long-Range Combat).

It was glorious, but it was more like a "Cult Clasic",few people heard about it,even fewer played.

They make no more money on that sale than they do when someone buys Call of Duty.

Chronicals of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is even deader than that. Which is a damn shame because the Riddick mode was fucking awesome.
I'll second that... I miss that game :(

Battle for Middle Earth II and Overlord are completely dead though, you wont find a single person in either of those ever
The BFME servers were shut down New Years Day because their license ran out. You can still find games on it via gameranger though.

http://www.gamereplays.org/rotwkunofficial202/portals.php?show=page&name=rise-of-the-witch-king-online-community

The biggest problem with it's online now is that the players still won't just stick to one patch (theres the one official patch, and then theres the unofficial 2.02 patch made by the above GR community) But yeah, do to the way connections work the game is nigh unplayable due to latency n such.

OT: Saga seems to be floating down there, though I haven't played in quite some time so I wouldn't know.

I doubt that, but no one would ever know seeing as valve negotiates with each developer and that is kept confidential. Also, Activision doesn't need valve to distribute games and get publicity, so activision (or any major publisher/developer) is in more of a position of power when it comes to negotiating. For indie developers, there are few other options(I am not saying valve makes ridiculous deals because they now that), and those don't give as much publicity as steam does. Desura has indie games on it, but less people buy them because the desura platform isn't as widely used as steam.

Steam is responsible for distribution only. Any publicity is the responsibility of the publisher, and the term you're thinking of is exposure.

The only one that I can think of right now that hasn't been said already is Prey. I wish it was still somewhat active, I really wanted to try it after I bought the game a year ago.

Red Faction: Guerrilla and and aforementioned Alien vs Predator. Alien vs Predator was just awful for multiplayer though, Red Faction was actually really fun.

Star Trek Elite Force.

I like the multiplayer a lot, but you're extremely lucky if you find ONE player online that isn't a bot.

You were right, I meant exposure. Regardless, indie developers need steam for exposure and sales and steam probably takes a higher portion of the income than from a major developer that has negotiating power.

I can never find matches on Red Faction Guerrilla for PS3... I really enjoyed the multiplayer in that one supposing no one was lagging and zipping around, blinking in my face smashing me with a hammer then appearing across the map XD
