World of Warcraft - Didn't give up, just retired. Got tired of logging in (Was 1 step below GM). Basically, for about 2 months or so, it looked like this:

Wah, we're not running Ulduar, VoA or Naxx 25 tonight
Ok, starting a 25 man, who wants in.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

Wah, we're not running Ulduar, VoA or Naxx 25 tonight.

Rinse and repeat that scenario, and yeah, that's about it. Got sick of trying to motivate people to play the goddamn game they pay monthly to freekin play. What the frick. Ugh.
My friend quit WoW because he said it was basically a job you pay for, he was a GM I believe too..

Stopped playing

Halo 3 - it felt too sow and clunky after COD4

Team Fortress 2 - Very steep learning curve and no idea what to do

COD:WAW - guns feel like they're about to fall apart in your hand. I hate the MP40 it looks like some plastic kid's toy and sounds like a woodpecker attacking a piece of plastic

I gave up on trying to play Call of Duty: World at War when I realised that everyone, and I mean everyone and their freaking grandmother is using a MP40 with Stopping Power or Double Tap.

Yeah, I've come to find that unless you're hardcore in WoW, the odds of a guild surviving as 'laid back' drop dramatically unless you have a core group of raiders. Problem is, those people get sick, have shit goin on RL etc... and there's only so many alts you can have for the core group. Meh, I haven't played in months and I feel like I'm a better person for it lol.
He was really into it, he played A LOT, the thing is he quickly figured out that he was working a second job because of it.

Mass Effect due to boredom, I don't mind games with a lot of dialogue, even written rather than spoken. Just make it interesting is all I ask.
Off-topic much? Does that game even have an option for multiplayer?

Halo 3, because I got tired of 8 year-old's profanity.

Because you can't host your own match or have a guest player in the game anymore, I had a lot more fun playing the game with my brother split screen, it made it easier to communicate, but they removed that feature too (playing with a guest that is), you had to have 2 xbox live accounts if you wanted to play split screen and we were not forking the cash out for that. I was so pissed at the change that I only wound up playing Horde with friends for a while. The game still rocks but the multiplayer changes had me quit.
If you're going to quit Gears 2 do it because of the gameplay. Headshots don't register, host has a stupid advantage and boomshot is just so good with 3 shots its retarded.
I have wanted to quit that game so many times, but I keep going back. I hate it but love it at the same time.

I couldn't get into the multiplayer gameplay, they took away a feature I loved and filled it in with a way for microsoft to suck more money out of me. I wanted to play with a guest in splitscreen, no guests in ranked matches, which is fine I can understand that but there's no unranked public matches (or there wasn't at the time) so you could either buy another xbox live account and play split screen (Not going to happen) or play private matches with guests which we did with horde mode because frankly I don't have the will to organize a big Gears 2 frag fest. I miss Gears 1 multiplayer, blah

CoD4 for me. I made the mistake of only starting to play online after the game had been out for about a year, and it seemed that every single game I went into involved facing off aginst people who had gone through prestige several times.

Meh, I was only ever good at one online FPS anways..... Rest in peace Shadowrun....

This. SWG is far and away the most epically failed multiplayer game ever. Seriously, the mismanagement and poor decision making that happened with this title was legendary. It stands as the epitome of how not to handle a game. Here's the jist of what happened to that game:

1. Game released much too early and in an incomplete state, but it had a lot of unique things and had potential.
2. The alpha class (Jedi) were handled awkwardly, received very little testing, and had a goofy implementation.
3. Rather than address all the individual problems, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) overhauled and rebuilt nearly every system in the game. Combat, crafting, entertaining, healing, housing, weapons, armor, consumables, everything was re-done. The game was still recognizable, but was vastly different.
4. LucasArts came to SOE and said "here, we rebuilt the game from the ground up. Deploy these changes immediately." Yes, that's right, they rebuilt the entire game a second time. This time, they ripped out the entire profession system (which allowed you to mix and match skills) and made everyone into one of 9 cookie-cutter classes. The economy and crafting system was dumbed down even further and the combat was changed to an almost FPS type of system. Did I mention that these massive changes came merely days after an expansion pack? SOE actually was issuing refunds to players who purchased the expansion and then summarily canceled their accounts once they saw the changes that went into effect.

SWG's failure was so incredible, there have been articles and editorials written about it, such as this one. [http://www.henryjenkins.org/2006/07/so_what_happened_to_star_wars.html]
