You cannot jump right into anything and expect to be good, compared to others who have been doing it for awhile. When you first start any kind of online play you have to expect to lose a bunch of times.

Consider also you'll be up against a number of people who devote their lives to online gaming, and yeah, and those are the ones you tend to run into first, and the cards are stacked against you.

Probably try to play against friends when you first start out. If you don't have friends who play games, expect to lose a lot or stick to single-player. Lately, I do the latter.

I was really good at the multiplayer on Killzone 2; playing as a medic I got into the top 10% for the first week i played.
MGO: I always play terrible. I can't get used to the mix of having to sneak and having to dodge snipers whilst killing people. Also, minus points? :(
Call Of Duty: Meh, I always play terrible at this. Unless i just focus on bringing the choppers or planting the bomb, i always do terrible.
My friend plays much better than me in MGO and COD: he plays on insane sensitivity and just seems to know where the snipers/campers are. His reaction times are super fast and he is just naturally good. Sucks against the AI though.

On normal days, I have a general consistency in MW2, averaging a 2:1 k/d. On stellar days I've pulled off 32-1 and 36-2 games. If I actually put in the hours some people do (the whole religious zealotry angle) I'd probably consistently pull off the 30+ kill, single digit death ratios.
Depends on the hours I play, and also if I'm playing glitchers.

I'm the kind of gamer that (mostly) doesn't really care how well I'm doing as long as I have fun. If I'm not having fun, it's time to play something else.

I'm probably above average. It depends on the game though. I was pretty damn bad in MW2, but in TF2 I'm pretty damn good. I just play games to have fun. I always just mess around. But in fighting games, I'm ATROCIOUS. That's when I just button mash and hope for the best.

I kind of get into a mode of playing multiplayer where I quit for a couple months then jump back in at the same level that I always was. I like to think I'm better at fps' than some and at one point I completely dominated at almost every game of Cod 4 I played. Other games I would ususally break even in k/d and go even more times than negative. The only game where I'm consistantly inconsistant is Halo 3 which is understandable because I feel like that's a pretty well balanced game in itself. If I quit for a while in Halo I'll either start strong or take a week or two to get back into it.

Depends on how lucking I am that day. Lucky days rarly happen so I stick to single player.

I'm pretty good on everything. Except RTS games.

Every time I go against a human I get annihilated. Every, damn, time. No matter how long I practice, how hard I try, I just lose and lose completely.

And yet I love RTS games... Odd.
And also this. Love RTS games, But i'm really bad at them. To all my strengh to beat normal on Dow:Dark Crusade.

You can't be good at Multiplayer games in general. You'd have to be good at every single game that has a multiplayer mode, lol. I used to be terrible at goldeneye when I was in middle school, but when I actually bought the game and played single player all the way through, I got a hell of a lot better, to the point where I can beat everyone I ever played before that. Tip: Play the game, then the multiplayer mode.

There is your problem, your using Ken, his hadoken is slower to create and not as powerful as Ryu's, if your using Ken your an anti-air and anti counter player. Ryu is the guy you need for space and combo's, Ken is the offensive character of the two.

2. I started online gaming last year and got quickly addicted to COD4. I was of course terrible at the start, but after 9 days logged into the game I had improved to the point where I could place first in about 2 of every 10-15 games if I played carefully and cautiously, but it's nigh on impossible for me to do consistently well.
Have you been a part of pro tournies?, I assume not, the guys your playing against have been playing since the Xbox first came out, and some of them since the PC FPS was all the rage, those guys you can't beat.... ever

Killing 30 year olds online is part of their muscle memory now, much like trying to be good at Virtua Fighter 5 when its the first beat em up you've played, trying to be good at a shooter well I'm afraid to say your far too late to the party.

So... (without this turning in a dick waving contest please, no-one wants to hear how you went 64-2 on Karachi using the F2000) which kind of gamer are you?
45 killstreak on KillZone 2.

Sorry but I gotta brag about that, KillZone is fucking hard.

Are you the type who no matter how hard you try, cannot get really good at 'pwning noobs'?

Or are you naturally gifted, finding it easy to just casually mangle anyone in your way?
Took me two hours to start topping the boards on MW2, but that game is easy

I'm pretty decent at most games. I'm best at FPS', decent at most sports games and fighters, and not bad at racers.

When I first got cod4, I wasn't very good. I varied wildly, but usually would be just under 1:1. I kept playing, and got better. Not much better, but an average game would give 1:1, and I varied around it. Then I stopped playing it much for a while, and went through a phase of palying mostly single player. Came back to it a month or two later, and it just clicked. My play was a lot more focused. I was doing much better, and after playing it more, got pretty good. I'd top the scoreboard almost every game, usually by a fair margin. If not for points, then almost always for kills, and K:D. There was a phase where it'd be unusual for me not to get a 10-15 kill streak, with 20+s every 10-15 matches, and I often got 2-3 helicopters a match(I played domination).

However, I got frustrated more. The flaws in the game(which aren't really that big) started to bug me. Also, I didn't have much to work towards(not bothered prestiging, had everything I wanted, etc), and that probably played a part too. I also got tired of the maps. When iI didn't know them well, it was always interesting, trying new things, exploring. Likewise with the classes. Now I only play occaisionally. When I do, i'm not as good as I was. My K:D is usually still good, but I don't rack up the kills quite like I used to. As well as this, my connection rarely seems as good as it was, and I still get frustrated with the minor annoyances of the games.

I think the real thing that made it click, was I started realising what I could do better, and played more tactically. Now I've gone back to it, I don't really. Not to the same degree. I do play with some tactics, but I don't play as meticulously, or with the same patience. I don't check all my corners, and will run from place to place, regardless of the fact there are places that cover my position, or just run into buildings blind. As a result, i die a bit more.

I'm pretty crap at multiplayer most the time, I can't let go of my grasp on what would happen in real life - pick up CoD and there'll be folks bouncing all over the place, throwing grenades and knifing whoever, whereas my first instinct is always to take it slow, crouch and shoot.. I play the situation rather than the game, and suffer accordingly

I don't know about you but no one is any good at any multiplayer game first time round, especially against human opponents. It's a time investment to get good at these things. What I like about multiplayer gaming is you have to think in about the way others think and trick them, which you can never achieve to the same effect against an AI. It's why I like playing as the Spy in TF2, it's all about the human psychy.

If I get stuck on a game for too long over a few days, then my performance actually suffers. Usually, if I take a break, or get into another game for a while (varying from mere hours or entire weeks), then when I get back I tend to rape everything... At least until I spend too much time on it again.

Overall though, no words can explain simply how much I live for multiplayer.

this is my type of play also.

I can become really good at something. I remember completely rocking in Unreal Tournament, Counter Strike: Source (to the point where I could play some maps blind and play relatively well) and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

But that was before I gained the ability to steadily increase my gaming collection. I had very little money to spend and thus had only a few games to play and focus upon.

Now that's all different, and it's the reason why I don't excel at anything nowadays. I switch between a bazillion games all the time and have dozens of control schemes in my head.
That sounds a lot like my situation. I used to focus more on individual games and steadily improve at them, but these days I just have so much to play that I don't usually stick with any one of them long enough to get to the highest levels of skill. I've played enough games over the years and learn quickly enough that I generally make it to "a bit above average" really quickly, but then I plateau there when I move onto the next game. Fortunately I'm not as competitive anymore, either, and I tend to play with people just for fun these days, so it works out.

Yeah dude, I pretty much suck at MP games. Sometimes I'll have a lucky match, but usually I don't even bother. Probably why I like RPG games so much. That and story, which I value over everything else.

I think you're just working with a to rigid system. You memorize these things when you should just be playing, plans are overrated and prevent you from adapting. Just go with the flow. Act as things come to you, never before hand. If faced with an immediate threat let your instincts take over, true combat is primal.

Follow this advice and you will be as good as me.
Funny you mention it... I just spent a couple of hours on MW2, had a few games where I relaxed and just took it as it came... running toward the enemy spawn with my TAR FMJ... ended up getting great scores and even got my AC-130 on Bailout by rushing!

I know what happens now though... I try to repeat it later tonight and end up negative 10 with a red face and quickly rising rage :D

Depends on the game much. Never been that good at FPSs, a little above average perhaps. I'm quite good at the Total War games though, but I suck at normal RTSs.
