Of course, this is pretty flawed for a few reasons. Still funny though - my bro (a hs junior, 1870 in SATs) only listens to gospel and Disturbed, both who scored very low.

maybe its just a coincidence, music is related to social context, social context is related to the tipe of education wich is related to SAT scores

so the short answer is
THATS RACIST

Why is Leonard Cohen not on this graph?

Am I stupid because this graph feels like a cluster of confusion? As an Australian I don't know how SAT scores are charted. Doesn't mean I'm not interested or ignorant, I just want a more readable graph. Which has more bands I actually listen to on. Why isn't Judas Priest or Weird Al Yankovic on here? Where is Muse?

i feel dumber for actually reading that article :|

sorry but that's not a very scientific study, even tho there is the possibility of there being some truth to it but there's also a lot wrong with it. cause i've met a lot of people who aren't the brightest bulb in the box but listen to mostly "smart" music

I have to agree with the bold part here, what can be concluded from the graph is a correlation with social context and music taste. It's not that far of a stretch that most people deemed "unintelligent" will be more accustomed to listening to only mainstream music. However, that's a faint connection that can be debated.

Ridiculous.

I know a Girl whose SATs are near perfect, her IQ is way above the classical music listening mark and she listens to guess what..Rap and hip hop music, so far it didnt retard her..lil wayne is one her favs.

I listen to all genres, so i guess this cannot apply to me in any way.

I'm a rather big fan of the old Ludwig Van but I don't think I enjoy his music because I'm intelligent* and I don't think listening to his music makes me intelligent. I just like the sounds, same goes for a lot of the music I enjoy such as led Zeppelin, Metallica and other Classical artists which are lower on the list. What does that make of me then? Every now and again I'm fairly clever while most of the time I'm rather average?

Actually, yeah, that does sound right.

*I'm not that smart anyway.

This kind of makes sense in a way, or at least it makes sense considering other studies. I read once that listening to classical music can cause you to score higher on tests. But here's a question for you:

What if let's say you were getting prepared to take a test and you decided to listen to Beethoven. Would whether or not you actually liked/preferred the music have any affect on how well you do?

well i think most of this forum can agree that they forgot game-soundtracks, which is for the most sophisticated people to listen to, while they mow down nazis, zombies and aliens with swords and guns

Basically.

I recall reading an article a guy wrote about teaching urban poor kids in New Orleans. They all loved Lil Wayne like nothing else. He really spoke to their experience -- and he was from New Orleans, so it was a matter of community pride as well.

(Eventually the guy who wrote the article concluded that he liked Lil Wayne a lot, too.)

Just because you have the ability to show any particular genre as "unintelligent", doesn't mean that you should. What did they accomplish by this? Giving people more reason to be bigoted and self-righteous about music? Way to go, asshats.

The list of artist's only include the top 130 favourite artist's as indicated by the students in the survey.

Read the OP edit for more details...

If you realize that these results are obviously just displaying correlation, the whole thing becomes a lot more reasonable, and you can actually see why the results may have turned out that way.
First reasonable post of the thread. You would think most people would have studied alittle statistics.

Yes, if you like Lil' Wayne and scored 1236, YOU ARE AN OUTLIER PEOPLE!

Just remember: Correlation does not mean causation. Just because they seem to be connected does not mean one caused the other. Thugs listening to rap does not make them dumb, it makes them a stereotype. Being dumb makes them dumb.

The fact that the jazz genre consists of nothing but Frank Sinatra and Norah Jones makes me a little angry. And when exactly was Josh Groban considered a pop singer?

It's garbage, basically.
