If its my first play-through a game, i don't play music as otherwise i'm more than likely to miss and awesome sound track, such as "slave- the evolutionaries" from dead rising (didn't think much for the rest of the music, granted).
But i tend to listen to music if its a game which doesn't grip me much, or if its something like God of War, because i like having a beat in the background whilst fighting, preferably from a track i like.

But some games i find that i totally suck at playing if i even turn the sound off, never mind listen to something else. Prime example is Monster Hunter Unite, for some reason, i can't seem to play anywhere near as well without the sound... dunno why really, its not even like you can tell which directions sounds are coming from or anything.
Oh, and i just thought of an example of when i love to listen to other music. Pokemon, but even then i'll turn it off to listen to certain battle music, such as League or Team Galactic or something, because they seem to try for those

I listen to the wireless whilst playing MW2 multiplayer. Hows THAT for some delicious juxtaposition!

i only listen to music when playing anything i've already beaten. i mean, i already know everything that's being said (and this makes skippable cutscenes that much more enjoyable)

No because i'm either playing a shooter where i nedd to hear my oponents creeping up behind me or a story centric RPG where i need/want to pay attention to what is going on

When playing RPGs I usually put on some minimal techno/house, chilled stuff though.

Shooters anything from thrash metal to stoner rock.

Anything else, generally acid rock.
ie. Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company,

The only game I play with music is WoW. I used to have Windows Media Player running in the background but then I downloaded an add-on called Epic Music Player and while it always throws up and goes quiet when there's generally any action going on in the immediate vicinity thanks to three or more players (an unavoidable bug but it's not that bad since music would probably be distracting in battlegrounds anyway), it definitely adds to the fun factor when I'm playing on my own (which is most of the time anyway) and removes the need for me to minimize the game just to switch to a song I like.

As for the music I listen to while playing WoW, I typically have Sonic Syndicate, Psyclon Nine, Killswitch Engage, and some random songs I like including but not limited to Heretique by Tristania, False Love In Real Life by Emmure, Chica Bomb by Dan Balan (it's catchy...), Emphasis by After Forever, I'm So Grindcore by Onision (lmao), 7861 by Beneath The Sky, Ov Fire And The Void by Behemoth, From Whence The Mourning Came by Empyrean, and a certain song by an entrepreneur who calls himself Tom O C (for the hilarity factor).
I also have two other playlists that I listen to when playing WoW. One playlist is dedicated to trance/techno, while the other playlist is filled with in-game music from the original C&C Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun and Tiberian Sun: Firestorm. Perfect for those moody traveling periods or when entering a different zone.

I used to love listening to 'O Fortuna' whilst leveling the cities of my enemies in Age of Empires.

I usually turn on my Pandora internet radio and flip it to Disturbed radio which usually plays Disturbed, Linkin Park, Godsmack, Korn, Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Metallica, Three Days Grace, Drowning Pool, Mudvaine, Stained, System of a Down, Saliva, Tool, Pappa Roach, and some other bands I don't remember right now.

I do also listen to some Killswitch Engaged, Slipknot, Skillet, and some Halo and Gears 2 tracks.

Makes my online matches more enjoyable.

I listen to music whenever I'm playing any FPS online. Mostly I listen to Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and Enter the Haggis. Occasionally I'll listen to classic rock, mostly Rolling Stones.

I play music when I'm playing and FPS or Racing Sim, sometimes if I'm playing an RPG. And whatever happens to be on my iPod.

Podcasts and standup comedy, as long as it's something like Borderlands or another such nonsense that I don't give a fuck about the story.

Yes. I once listened to my iPod while my friends blasted music on my computer while playing Guitar Hero. needless, to say it was just a bunch o' noise.

Never for single player because I want to be immersed, and never for online shooters because I need to hear the enemy and usually my friends over Teamspeak.

The only time I'll put music on is when I play MMORPGs, but I'm not currently playing those. However, viking metal goes great with WoW PVP and it's always nice listening to an album you wanted while RPing in the Prancing Pony on LOTRO.

Yes, I listen to music while playing games.
It normally boosts my efficiency while I play.
Those are, of course, just a couple of the songs I listen to while gaming.

It depends. It's usually a two-sided issue for me, as I really like the game music of some of the games I play but usually just don't feel like listening to it. Ocassionaly I just go 'fuck everything' mode though, and put the game full screen with music on, ignoring everything or anybody else who might want something from me.
