To be fair, I do not listen to "real" punk.
I am willing to admit that most of the stuff I like is branded pop-punk or alternative.
I'm okay with that, because it's what I like, and fuck anyone who wants to make an issue of it.

And hey, someone's gotta hate them - it's not like they realize how stupid they are.
We try our best to ignore you. Anyway, It's not easy to find modern day punk. Sometimes you have to go back to the roots to find anything worth a damn. As long as pop-punk just keeps it's feet away from the emo cliff, I'll still listen to them.
That's because there is no such thing as modern 'true' punk. The punk movement is over, and now the problem for up-and-coming musicians such as myself is this; what is there left to do? We've already hit every corner of the musical world, and now it's just generally rehashing the same stuff. That's why you have so much shit saturating the market now. What I want to do is bring back a musical renaissance, if you will, in which the world will once again return to a day of punk, metal and classic rock, when guitar players were good, hair was big, and increasingly-anodyne pop bands were not churned out every five minutes. Basically, I'm screwed, but don't want to admit it.
Yep, you're fucked. No matter what you do you will never reinvigorate true punk or even come close to mimicking it. Does that mean you should give up? Hell no, it might not be original or up to "standards," but as an artist it's your responsibility to do and create what you believe in.
You know something we haven't seen in a while? A proper ZZ Top-esque band with more innuendos in the lyrics than you can shake an electronic mega-stick at.

When compared to other music with no meaning such as rap that seems to be all about hookers, guns and killing people
This is where you irritated me. You've obviously never listened to a rap album, I can name about 40 artists that have songs and material with meaning and no mention of hookers guns and killing people, moreso than perhaps some of your favoured bands. I understand you have an opinion of rap, but your opinion is wrong.

OT:

Cunninlynguists - Their stories and messages are always deep and told through poetic wordplay, I can never get bored.

Juggaknots - rhyme flow sacrificed for straight beautiful storytelling.

I'm like an STD: You always remember me, even if only from the burning sensation when you pee.

This is true - as someone else said, the punk movement is pretty much over.
And yeah, emo is extremely bad.
Especially the random high-pitched screaming and tight girl pants.
Seriously, why?
If you are the STD, then the power and willingness to vote is our Trojan Brand Condom. Were you ever around for "Rock the Vote?" Terrible times to be young, I tell you.

Teenage angst will make people follow whatever is the "cool crowd." Unfortunately to say, the cool crowd sucks for this generation. Now, I just lob everyone into the "gangsta" or "emo" bin.

I've heard of Rock the Vote.

But "the old days" can't be as bad as today.
Emo chicks are hot in a very generic "I look like everyone else" way, but there is nothing redeeming in the whole "gangsta" subculture.
Bad music, bad taste in clothing, shitty attitude (towards anyone not wearing size 400 pants)
Well, enjoy those emo girls while they last. From what I found, they usually grow out of that phase by the time they go to college. Usually then they go back to "normal" or else fall under nerd girls or straight up stab-you-in-the-face goth.

There is talent to be found in nearly every genre of music, since music is so subjective you will find good song writers, good volcalists, guitar players etc etc in nearly every genre.

Op, i think i know what you mean when you say that pop songs/rap have no meaning- i have had situations where i have been listening to a song by Eluveite where they do a song in tribute to some young girl who died over 2000 years ago whreas my brother has been listening to a song by the Killers, which seems to be something about a riot van.

I am personally drawn to metal music as i like the emotional impact it conveys- it gives you a sense of power, bbecause they play loud and heavy. Many metal bands sing about fanciful things such as demons, hell, souls, epic Viking Saga's which to me i would rather listen to, as i am by nature imagantive. I will be more interested in a song about say, the battle of Pascendale, (Iron Maiden Song) or a song about pirates sailing the high seas (any song by Alestorm XD) as compared to a song about being a womanizer (madonna) or a song about a riot van (Killer's i belive)

I like music that helps me escape, reality sucks half the time, and many pop songs are to closely based in the boring old real world. That is my personal taste in music.

Also, if you want meaning you should look to hardcore bands. Their raspy screaming voices hide masterfully crafted lyrics of sorrow and hatred.

To be truthful, all songs have a meaning. If there was no meaning behind a song, then there would be no reason nor intention behind writing it and there would be no actual definition to the song. Even if the song is just about guns and hookers or has no meaning, that is still a meaning for it. I Am The Walrus by John Lennon has no definition, but that is the meaning of it. The song's meaning is to be completely random, as he was told by a schoolgirl in a letter that her English class had to analyse his songs, and he decided as a result to write a song that was impossible to analyse.

Anyway, I do like songs like the ones you're referring to, such as Radiohead and The Dead Kennedys. These groups are probably what make up the majority of my music collection.

I haven't run across much music that has "no meaning" and I'm a music student. Yes I admit certain artists put more PASSION into their message, but all music instictively has a message. Whether that be my girl broke my heart I'm sad or I'm a thug and I carry a gun or the musings of a conflicted soul when faced with his own darkness. Its all a message.. its just what connects most with you.

I have to say I like Rise against but they aren't what I would give as a "passionate" example of displaying a message. Check out a band called "Me Without You" or a rapper called "Sage Francis" those two are definitly on the top of my passionate artists list. The first being my all time number 1 as an example of a man with passion in his music.

I'm under strict orders from myself to never get involved because love is like inviting someone to shoot you in the back of the head.
Heh, a great man once said "Women weaken legs!" Though in the end you start to kick yourself later on for living by that quote. If you do break orders just remember to keep your K-Pot on.

Yeah they're a great band :D It's just a shame that the lyrics are so damned hard to make out beneath all that death metal growling. Sometimes I think they would be better off as an instrumental band, 'cos their amazing musicians.

But yeah, I reckon a lot of the songs by Hank Williams III, and Johnny Cash have a lot of meaning, if you can get past the fact that they're country :p Also see Joy Devision for deep/ depressing lyrics.

Lust is even worse than love, if only because I can't understand it.

But yeah, ladies are both awesome and terrible in their way.
What is there to understand? Do I need to draw a picture that will get me banned? Heh, I'm pretty sure most kids change their views on life, happiness, and love multiple times during high school. Personally, I remember being all rebellious and whatnot during my freshman year with the whole long hair and unshaved thing. It's weird when you look back on how you used to act.

And to say over and over again that rap has no message and is only about bad fashion and bad attitudes is about one of the most uneducated statements I've ever heard. You're all idiots any one who agreed with that. You have no idea what you are talking about. Educate yourselves before entering discussions or someone is going to come along and make you look like the 18yr old fucking moron you are.

Here's a list for you idiots to look up. Then you can suck mine.

1. Sage Francis
2. Aesop Rock
3. Public Enemy
4. Mc Front-a-lot
5. Mc Chris
6. Saul Williams
7. Cubby Bear
8. KRS-One
9. Mos Def
10. Dead Prez

And thats just the first 10 that quickly popped in my head. There are probably 20 more on my ipod and 500 I haven't heard yet. So shut the fuck up, you don't know anything about what you are talking about.

And for your information punk music is saturated by bands with little message. Yes there are a lot with powerful messages but there are bad examples and good in every genre. So don't just bash a style of music out of silly fanboy ignorance please. You look dumb.
