I went to a Michael Bolton concert for my 16th birthday. Pretty much everyone I knew teased me, but I legitimately like his music. I teased them back when he was "cool" thanks to the Jack Sparrow song like a decade later.

I enjoy Nickelback. I just don't think they're that bad. In fact, this song...

<youtube=b3vJ5XyjGa8>

is AWESOME!

I'm also quite fond of Eminem. He's one of the few "modern" rap artists I like, let alone tolerate.

Pretty much the only one I can think of is Supertramp. Really not all that hated in my opinion. Of course they do have a couple of songs that are hard to get into with other guys around. They have a ton of good songs, some mildly goofy ones as well. Ever listen to the Logical song, yeah that kind of shit. Kind of always been a fan of the oldies. There was a time when I was listening to everything. So far, oldies have won for me. Even keep up with what's current, so it's not like I have a stopping point. Really have nothing bad to say either about new music. Very hard for me to like certain songs. Every time I hear something good, it's because I had to wad through a ton of shit.

While I'm not familiar with the band, I've never heard them be called that. Lyrically, I believe they're just good old hail Satan black metal, man. Nothing politically motivated.

hated by my peers [http://patientzero.bandcamp.com/] it seems. All of them aren't very big fans of it, there seems to be a few on the internet that appreciate them, but it seems I'm pretty dry when it comes to people with similar tastes.
I would have embedded it but it seems bandcamp embeds don't work sadly.
Oh yeah my slightly more popular preffered artist [http://theenigmatng.bandcamp.com/track/dreamer] is The Enigma TNG.
Look at me being all hipster with these artists that almost no one has heard of and using hyperlinks. I'm so pro.

This song is one I adore. I think it's relaxing and interesting, a rare combination. I've listened to it more than any other song on "Geogaddi".

And not a single person I know who hears it, be they Boards of Canada fans or my girlfriend, thinks I'm sound of mind afterwards. They tell me it's bad, creepy and even "demonic".

Funny thing about them. A friend of mine told me that they were protested by a church group for making "satanic ritual music" or some such nonsense. After hearing that, they actually did make a song just like that for teh lulz.

Maybe this is one of those songs. I like it.

I've heard some of their stuff that comes kinda close to that. But it's not so much political as "Norway is for Norwegians, get out of Scandinavia" purity stuff. I think that is basically what Varg says, but then I don't usually care what he has to say.

I'm not actually surprised that people would do that. Most of their music has a very odd quality to it, especially songs like "1969", "Dandelion" and "Tears From the Compound Eye", which almost sound like they're being played backwards.

Well I'm pretty sure quite a large portion of people in the world dislike the Hollywood Undead and Deuce. I started listening to Hollywood Undead back in 8th grade I think and still listen to their first album every now and again. I also picked up Deuce's, their ex lead singer, new cd when it came out because it sounded like old school Hollywood Undead. I know the lyrics are downright abysmal and shouldn't exist. But god damn it they are so catchy.

It's purely guilty pleasure.

Another I guess could be good anime ops. I've been listening to Lucky Star, Baka and Test, and Heaven's Lost Property ops almost nonstop this week. If I showed my friends them or they heard me listening to them, I would NEVER hear the end of it. We still give my friend shit from hitting a bus, that was three years ago. We don't drop shit.

Most of the people I know don't seem to like D&B. Which is fine. Considering the number of combinations available in the average 5 minute song. There is a sound out there for everyone for all time.

Seeing as many of the songs/bands I was going to name were already mentioned in this thread, I can't really say that there are bands I love that everyone else hates, especially seeing as the fact that they were mentioned before means that there are other people who would agree with me, so "universally hated" goes right out the window...

Well... I don't mind songs by Nickleback or Creed, and I've been a Linkin Park fan ever since high school. (...What? Stop laughing!)

Well, amongst my friends there's quite a few that share my love of guilty pleasure type bands, although lots of metalheads get pretty douchey about them. Stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, Parkway Drive (most metalcore gets slated, even I'm very picky about it) or Slipknot all get ripped on by TRVE METULZ types. Hell, I rip on Bring Me The Horizon and Bullet For My Valentine for being shit, but I'm just taking the piss a bit (although they are shit).

I tend not to really talk to my friends about the non-metal music I listen to (metal is very much our common ground and biggest love) but I'm pretty sure none of them understand my deep and mildly erotic love for Streetlight Manifesto and the more alt stuff like Sonic Youth or The Pixies. The only things I know that everyone flat out despises are Hacktivist:
Mmmm... Djent-hop.
and The Dillinger Escape Plan:
who are possibly the greatest thing ever in my book. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them liked them actually, that's always nice. It was a great feeling discovering that one of my friends loves Nine Inch Nails as much as I do.

Well as someone who's been going to hardcore (as in happy hardcore) raves since high school I'm well versed in liking music everyone seems to hate :p
Eh?...happy hardcore was pretty damn popular and it's still quite popular in townie/chav circles (much as it ever was).

On that note, Hardcore (as in Gabba, speedcore, doomcore etc Pretty much any type of hardcore techno, excluding breakcore). It's not a dark secret, it's just an acquired taste.

Yeah, in the UK. To put it in perspective I was at a rave last weekend in a venue with a dance floor that was smaller than my apartment. There were probably, I dunno... 20 - 30 people actually dancing most of the time?

Also here, it's all basically hardcore. Gabber, Freeform, Cheese, Upfront, etc. And all of these will be mixed with abandon. Hell, even drum and bass, might even do some crazy shit to go down to breaks tempo for a few tracks then pitch it back up.

It's funny that the "chavs" as you put it like that kind of music. Over here the only people going to the kandi style raves are pretty geeky in general.

Despite thinking the subject matter of nearly all of their songs is hilariously atrocious, I genuinely enjoy the Hollywood Undead.

I'm coming with you.

That and Dubstep, maybe it's just universally hated (By West London).

Ah, you're Canadian, that explains it.

It makes sense when you realise that techno etc was and is a lot more mainstream in Europe, there were one or 2 happy hardcore tunes that made it into the top 10 singles charts back in the mid 90's. Happy hardcore is also essentially a mix of hard dance music and cheesy pop, so good for people who like to get massively off their faces on E yet also like the warblings of pop star/starlet X,Y,Z. The candy raver thing never really happened in the uk, certainly not with happy hardcore, closest thing would be psychedelic trance, and that was a bit more krusty. Happy hardcore was always a majority of guys in tracksuit bottoms and sports label t shirts and girls in mini skirts and big ol' bangle ear rings. Inevitably called Kev, Gary, Tracy or Mandy.

Skrillex isn't dubstep? Then what the hell IS dubstep? And don't 'explain' it with a video: I won't go near it.
Well, I could... but, then it would just feel like a wiki dump, especially when it gets all technical and shit... lol... (Let just say it's been around for more than 20 years...)

For me, it's film music scores, and mashups. Can't get enough of them, especially when a film OST matches perfectly with a multiplayer game session I play at the same time, or a mashup brilliantly combines two completely different songs into one harmonious bubble.
I fucking LOVE mashups... I seem to be the only one in my area that does... Basically, mashups are usually the only way I can enjoy most of the modern mainstream music... like this one...
I don't really like listening to any of those two singers... but I like this mashup...

Anyway, three of my favorite mashups (just to name link a few) are:
(That last one I never regretted driving down my neighborhood playing it at full blast...)

If I have to choose another genre, it would have to be modern hip-hop... Specifically modern hip-hop remixes...
Yeah... It's "really" niche (in terms of the ones I listen to... I mean, those two came from the same person), but I don't care...

I'm going to show up everyone.

We'll start off soft.
This probably isn't what most folks would actually hate, but the groups I hang around and talk to both IRL and online would at best say 'meh' to this.
I probably like it just because of Corey Taylor, who was easily the best part of Slipknot. (Hey, a twofer!)

I'll be the first to decry most of the music on american country stations like GAC and the like, but this.
This is just too fun and silly and fuckin' catchy to deny. It's barely country music, but I love it.

Good ole Coldplay. I just find them to be nice, enjoyable music.

Cue the trve metal fans marching in to point and scream their reliable battle chant of "Not metal!".
I admit these days Disturbed doesn't do much for me, but this album and even their first just have a lot of heart, but Believe stands tall as their crowning achievement in my mind.

I absolutely love the "death n roll" sound Entombed cultivated on their later albums. Most metal fans feel they couldn't take a big enough shit on the this era of this band.

I feel this group was unfairly labeled with the title of "NES-core" (which they vehemently object to), as this band was always a lot more to me. Basically take some hardcore, turn up the schizophrenia just a bit to be noticeable, accent with traces of progressive elements, and of course, the oft malaigned synth the keyboardist uses. It all comes together in a wonderful maelstrom of anger and id(the singers penchant for taking real experiences from his own life and paralleling them to certain well known video games/scenes/tropes is quite the feat in and of itself) that I find quite enthralling to witness.

Kind of a funny story to this album. When it first released I didn;t really hate it like everyone elese seemed to, but it did put me off just a bit, and greatly confused me.
I probably listened to it 20 or so times and then pretty much shelfed it.
Fast forward 4-5 years and piinyouri is in a different place mentally and emotionally from how I was then, and the album has a new perspective for me. It talks about things I'm kind of dealing with right now in my life. It's also DIFFERENT. As much as I loved it's predecessor Death magnetic, it doesn't have hardly any originality to it. The songs are almost templates of older songs. It's like James and gang were playing them looking at the camera sadly and saying "Are we doing it right now? A-are you happy?"
And I love the snare, I always have.

OoOoooooOoO boy, we've hit the big one now haven't we?
I actually give people a lot of allowance for disliking what Mike Anderson and Stephen O'Malley do.
It's not music, least not in the traditional sense. There's no melody, no real structure aside from the plodding bone pulverizing riffs that drift out from hooded figures. It's really much closer to ambiance, dark ambiance of course.
I actually do not care too much for the straight drone stuff they do. I can certainly appreciate it, from a mechanical and artistic standpoint, but just the drone riffs is not enough for me. It all comes together when they step into other territories, such as the afore mentioned ambient, soundtrack, and noise. This isn't something I put on to intently listen to, it's entertainment in the same way watching a good creepy movie is. Certain songs of theirs just build this immense choking atmosphere. It can be quite palpable(And yes, this is maximized if you listen through a good set of speakers turned up loud, as it more or less replicates the experience of seeing them live. It's as much a physical experience as an aural one)

The track I linked has a long drone intro, so you can skip to around 8:00 if you want to get to the bit's where the crying violins come in and slowly start the long descent into madness.

Oh I saved the best for last.

Please line up over there to commence the mass blacklisting of one, piinyouri.
What can I say? I started listening to these goobers back in middle school and though I fell out of them as I got older, I never entirely stopped listening.
They're silly and they're stupid. And that's exactly why I like it.
Except Mike Clark, their producer. That guy is crazy talented, and is probably definitely responsible for their success, because as entertaining in a court jester kind of way the duo can be, they can't rap for shit. Best they can do is hide their dramatic lack of skill with Clarks eclectic, imaginative beats.
