Meh I don't mind. Won't change anything about the games I play, I don't live in Islam :3

I have a friend over there who might not be too happy, but chances are he'd import anyways.

At this stage I no longer get angry. I just sigh and file it under 'Muslims gonna Mus'

And if anyone thinks that's offensive... then I really don't care. I am against Islam itself. The people I can deal with.
I BEHEAD YOU!

But I agree, won't effect me.
But anyway, PANIC BUTTON ESCAPISTS!

"While the U.S has a tradition of respecting free speech, there is no equivalent to the First Amendment in many Islamic nations."

There never has been. Sharia is proof enough of that.

Honestly though, I can see publishers not even bothering to release games in Middle Eastern countries, or even accepting a rating from this group, if this is what they have to deal with.

And, if these people are so sensitive to works of fiction and entertainment that they create a separate system just to rate games based on 'respect of Islam', then I honestly do not know what else to say. It's baffling to me, and I don't know weather I should feel sympathy for these people, or think of this as paranoia.
You should read first. In fact read the title, "based on values of islam" then see the article for those values.
"ESRA will work as an indicator for game companies in order to know whether the games approve with the Islamic values, and do not violate any of the Islamic traditions in Islamic countries."

In other words, whether or not they respect those values. That phrase I used is perfectly within context.

Sounds like an Islamic version of the Childcare Action Project but for video games.

Bah, ratings always been wierd. 18+ for sexual content(even withouth violence) and 16+ for blodd and gore.. somthing is a little amiss here (being from norway, we don't see naked bodies as something to shame ourselves about in movies and media)

Also, Church of Cuthulu, Scientology, Spagheti Monster, Wiccans etc. are they going to get their ownrating?

No more box arts, just rating RATINGs EVERYWHERE

Great, another way to blind there people.

Games shouldn´t be ratet on religious values, i find it grotesque.
It would be unless, in a lot of the world, religious values and social values were the same thing (oh,wait). So, for a place like Iran or the UAE, it really is just giving a rating based on what the local values are. Not unlike the ESRB in the western world. What I think I'm saying is: everyone grow a pair and stop getting in a tizzy whenever someone's morality is informed by their religion.

Sometimes things like these remind me that Muslims basically are Christians.

Don't tell to either of them I said that though, they'll be furious!
Why would we be? We're both monotheistic, which isn't common. Yours is a fair observation.

I don't think it's as much the fact that the social values are motivated by religion as it's what the social values are which is sparking debate and criticism.

If a religious scripture describing the views of a god said "look at the declaration of human rights and live by it" (or something to that effect), I doubt many here would get pissed that such values were religiously motivated, it's just that the canonical scriptures describing the views of most gods say something else entirely...

There's cultural relativism - all good and well - and there's ethical relativism which is considerably less uncontroversial.

No different than Christian groups measuring content in games. Don't see the issue.
I support the Christian groups doing it, because they help inform parents so parents don't buy their kids a trashy game for adults. The problem here, though, is that the Muslim version is ideal for being abused - a major organization rating a game on content is only one law away from banning anything that doesn't meet a certain standard.

This isn't an issue with Christian reviewers, because PlainGames and Reviews4Parents aren't major organizations.

*glances at modern military FPS games with thousands of extremist muslim terrorist enemies*
you know its jsut a matter of time before those mad oil sheiks make a reverse call of duty right, i'd be surprised if there isent a mod that makes you drive around in a little honda car, with your ak74 and rpg instead of a humvee and shoot americans instead of taliban XD
A matter of time? It has already happened! [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Force]...although it was the Hezbolah and not the Taliban that made it.

"This game is rated H for Haraam."

How many games would actually pass these standards? I don't know all that many that do. RTS games with an economy system are out for certain, since profiteering is forbidden, and that's all I ever do on those (everything turns into a quest to make more money).

As a voluntary resource, it hopefully can't be a bad thing, simply putting more information out there.

Let's face it, the main thing holding us back as gamers is that non gamers flatly refuse to learn a damn thing about games, then blame the games when there's something they don't like in there. It's equivalent to not learning to read, then complaining that your kid learned some new words at the library.

If it helps offer some guidance to parents of that faith, then it's a good thing, so long as the people running it aren't mental, like some of the 'Christian movie review' sites I've seen, where "Harry Potter" is seen as a satanic training video, because they're doing magic when they should be praying and that girl needs to cover herself up too, the harlot!

Typically I can't find the one I remember, which used to be hilarious reading...really strict Christians sitting thru Hostel or Saw with a notebook, so they can rate it for other people.

I'm not saying you should judge a book by it's cover but damn :D
