http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/12/microsoft-difference-between-cheat-exploit-none-banned.ars

People have always wondered, what is the difference between a cheat and an exploit? Microsoft says none.

A new glitch going around in MW2, called the javelin glitch, is supposedly what started this. If a person is caught using this glitch to their advantage, they will recieve a temporary ban of up to 2 weeks. Microsoft has said that it has already handed out bans.

I guess glitchers now have to be wary of what they do.

So...they are banning players...for using a glitch...When it's the devs fault that the glitch even exists...

Yeah that makes plenty of sense.

Not everyone updates. But then again I suppose it being on the 360 means they can force it.

I don't know my boxes are not hooked up to the internet.

But if people exploit them to their advantage they deserve to be punished as well for ruining the game for others by using glitches of that sort.

Well, I suppose that's one way they want people to keep playing by the rules. I'd say good for them, but they should just fix it in a patch rather then ban people

Not really, the glitch wasn't part of the intended programming, and the glitch offers a huge advantage to those who know how to exploit it.

When a gamer figures out a workaround to what the game devs had in mind, then that is clever and the game designers themselves think it cool, a bug that wasn't spotted used as an advantage?, not cool.

Sony has said they aren't going to do anything about this glitch, which I approve: the console maker should never be tasked with policing an issue with the game creation, and they definitely shouldn't be doing it voluntarily as Microsoft is doing. It is not the player's faults that the glitch is in the game, it's the developer's fault. It's the developer's place to fix it. If they want to ban people, IW or Activision should do it, because it's their game.

Oh well, lots of pre teens are going to wake up to a nasty surprise, that isn't their mum finding those magazines. Serves them right the little bundles of joy.

This is the company that can't implement a working server browser, don't count on it.

The information has been out there that bans will be handed out for exploiting this since it became a known glitch. If you don't care enough to read that information while you basically grief everyone in your games, well sucks to be you. I wish they were handing out permanent bans, this glitch is just ridiculous sometimes.

A temporary ban from Xbox LIVE or from MW2 Multiplayer? If it's from MW2, well, good. Who needs a bunch of exploiters ruining the game for everyone else? If it's from LIVE, then that's a little bit much.

I'm more than happy they are banning people now for using that glitch. You have no idea how annoying it is to shoot someone running at you kamikaze style with a Javelin waiting to give you a martyrdom you weren't expecting. However if you don't shoot them prepare for a knife with a very long reach (aka Commando perk). Very unfair and way overdue for consequences of its use.

Yeah, but if you are playing online you have it internet enabled and IW could force you to download it.

I'm that is just stupid I really thought they were trying to abuse their fans as much as possible with this game but it seems Microsoft is getting in on it too.

Does that mean they will ban people for doing Jumps aswell?

This is bullcrap.

How are they going to prove people were doing it? Other players reporting them? Please.

The report button on LIVE is a joke.

It's a very annoying glitch too, like Martyrdom times 10.

You mean the elevator thing? Why not get those guys too, I don't need someone shooting me from 100 feet in the air. Unless you mean just regular jumping, which is also ridiculous in this game. I'm relatively sure soldiers engaging in real modern warfare don't have spring-loaded boots that make them hop all over the map like jackrabbits.
