I came across this very randomly, http://www.allgamesbeta.com/2011/11/modern-warfare-3-child-death-outrage.html or http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=dZhRNAeE9rk

Please take a minute to judge the video. You watched it ? Good, Okay as we can clearly see in what appears to be MW3 a child is killed by a bomb blast. Will this cause unnecessary controversy ? and what are your opinions ?

My opinion: I honestly don't have a problem with it, it's sad and a little disturbing but really I don't see it crossing any limits, the player is not actually interacting in anyway it's really just a cut scene and their have been far worse things in games then this so I'll happily let it pass.

I think the point of this is to cause contoversy. Controversy sells games.

But yeah my opinion of the actual clip is I'm surprised they went through with it. One thing I've learned from video games and a lot of films is children do not die on screen and if they do it isn't that sudden. That was a pretty grim moment really. Child dancing around happy
*bam*
they're dead.

Still I'm certain it's all just there to create controversy, so therefore gaining publicity, therefore gaining sales.

Like i said in the other thread about this, MODERN WARFARE 1 DROPPED A NUKE ON AN ENTIRE CITY. Lots of children died in that, we just didn't see them.
Exactly but

If we didn't see it, it didn't happen. I think that's idiotic, besides, sure the kid dies, that scene from prey is waaaay more graphic, I don't think there is a difference from the mother dying than from the kid dying. A life is a life.

That kid just seems so fucking Disney. I didn't feel a thing when she was blown up in that clip, and I didn't feel a thing during the No Russian mission in MW2 either.

Personally i'm waiting for the Daily Fail to do what it did last time and call in some agony aunt who knows nothing of games and force her 12 year old son to watch it (an 18 rated game) then moan about how it made her precious darling scared and cry like her..

And then probably say it killed Diana and causes cancer..

I could leave a honest comment about how cheap this trick that Activison pulled is. BUT instead I'm going to ask a question regarding the video:

Did the family make it to the big ben clock?

One of the things that's been pissing me the fuck off about COD these days is it's desperate act to try to get attention. The mission 'No Russian' in Modern Warfare 2 was just irritating because it was just the game's way of saying "HEY NEWS AND MEDIA COVERAGE LOOK! LOOK AT ME! HEY OVER HERE! GIVE ME ATTENTION!" And now this. Look the big nuke scene in COD4 was good because it was unexpected and shocking and you're walking across a deserted scene with the bodies of your dead comrades around you. Now COD has been desperately trying to capture that same WOW, but is severely failing.

You know the movie Jaws? You know how it's regarded as a classic and remembered fondly by millions?

Also had a child death scene, much more visceral at that. They have nothing to go on here.

The Call of Duty series is desensitizing people to violence and death. Their games are aimed at an immature audience that will think killing everyone who is not the same as you is the right thing to do.
It's almost like their brain-washing kids to do things. It's a conspiracy!

OT: It's like a scene from a really bad Batman film...

How has nobody mentioned the Leonards Regret mission from Drakengard yet? It involves child soldiers and you play as a mass murdering sociopath. You get one guess as to what you have to do as the mission objective

Compared to what you had to do there, this is pretty fucking tame...plus, last i checked, Drakengard didn't get any flak for that mission so i guess i don't see why Cod gets called out on it.

Honestly I've seen this before hand and i just giggled. not because i'm a desensitized prick. (that's a completely other issue) but because it's a terribly done cut scene. Maybe it hurts more within the context of the game, but you don't see the kid or her mom dying, the truck blowing up is just kind of hilarious and you drop like a bag of bricks. it's just silly. So i wouldn't get my panties in a knot over a single death of some 00001111010101 kid. It's a bad attempt at controversy and we all know it's going to be on the news and make the game sell millions. but unless you the character a belt tie up the kid and beat and rape her. there is nothing truely controversial about this.

Pffft, big deal.

No, I don't anything will happen this time because:

a) You're not doing anything to the child. Its a cutscene. Most of the controversy in games revolves around the fact that you're actually doing the action, like in MW2, you actually pull your trigger on the controller to kill the civilians.

b) The part of me that still has faith in humanity says that most people will see it as it is-an explosion occurs, and the girl disappears into the mist. You don't see her get impaled on a spike, or a bullet go through her head. That same exact same thing happens in a popular action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger "Collateral Damage".

The optimist in me is pretty much desperately shushing the cynic in me, because lets face it - Fox News. But one can always hope.

I just think kid killing in general is beyond low. I don't care how "subtle" it is, if the kid dies thats evil. I know its probably suppose to generate an emotional reaction, and I am definately pissed, but I don't think the world is ready for a game that shows kids getting their legs blown off by a mine.

I'm just glad it had a happy ending :D

OT: I can see they're attempting to add gravitas to the story but it was done cheaply as the main character has no actual ties to the people being killed - it's just there for shock factor which does make it unnecessary to show.

Didn't Yahtzee call this back in his MW2 review?

That's a little funny.
Is the kid in the explosion an apple cheeked cub-scout trying to earn money for his grandma's dialysis machine?

One of the missions better make you stomp on a puppy.

It's not even slightly controversial. As someone else said in another thread, you don't see the kid choking to death, nor anyone else doing the same. Just her and her mother disappearing in a cloud of green smoke, while the dad falls over and seemingly dies instantly, without any gasping breathes or choking sounds.

To be honest, TV shows have scenes that are a lot more controversial then that one. :p
I know what you mean; I was watching CSI, the one in Las Vegas, and they showed a decomposing baby on the show. I don't think this will be as controversial

I think I'm actually interested in the game now!

...

HAAAHAAHAA~ OOhh God... I almost kept a straight face there... *Whew*!

Back On Topic: Really this changes nothing... Ever since I heard that they were officially gonna make another Modern Warfare instead of killing it off like decent human beings I knew that they would try and 1-up the whole "No Russian" thing... It just seems that they failed miserably!

They should have had a scene where you play a terrorist who has to kill a child with his bare hands! Now THAT would be a controversy!

throw in an achievement for doing it without hesitation for bonus points...
