if you want ALL OF THE XP, go into ground war, and run the recon drone. You'll get an extra 1K+ XP PER ROUND, at least.

Hmm. I haven't got/played MW3, but I did play MW2 a great deal, as well as Blops and BC2 to some degree.

In both MW2 and Blops, I favoured a stealthy approach and using the terrain and my cammo to remain undetected by UAV's, various killstreaks and from the very enemies I was fighting.

I know that MW3's perks have been changed a great deal, but if I was to play it today I'd still focus on Blind Eye, Assassin and Dead Silence, along with a silenced weapon of some kind.

I've always found that the element of surprise and minimising the enemy's ability to detect you was more beneficial to my playstyle than going for more accuracy or damage. However, everyone is different and has different playstyles.

The main issue with all FPS games is positioning. A good portion of any FPS requires the use of good strategic and tactical positioning and awareness of the most likely areas and ways in which the enemy will hide/move through. High traffic areas in general you wish to avoid. You'll want to be on the outside of the map unless you're playing a more teambased game such as DOM or CTF.
You need to be aware of the sightlines in all the maps you play, and try to minimise your travelling time in open ground and always try to pick a route that gives you the best possible protection when reaching your goal. Knowing the sightlines allows you to predict how and where a potential enemy can strike from.

Also, I'd like to say that knowing when to retreat and when to attack is important too. Don't try to take on 4 people at the same time and charge them. Nine times out of ten it simply won't work. If you don't hold the advantage in a situaion retreat and regroup. Chances are the enemy will smell blood and try to chase you; you can then capitalise on this.

Be aware of flanking and counter-flanking maneuvers and act accordingly. If your teammates are attacking/defending a certain point, keep a look out on the other paths and routes to your location so you can cover them and don't leave yourself or your flanks open. Try and protect your blindspots by utilising sentries, claymores and other equipment. One tactic I used to use was laying down claymores to protect my blindspot. If it went off, regardless of whether or not it killed the person, I knew that I was in danger and could act accordingly.

Sounding was also for me very important. Knowing who is where was important to my playstyle. Everytime I heard a sound of someone running, moving or reloading I would reference that sound to the UAV's information. If a teammate was nearby the area that the sound originated you can breathe easy; if there isn't a teammate close to that area, try and predict where the enemy will come from and put yourself in the best position you can in order to attack them.

This is fairly basic stuff, but I hope it helps. Remember though that at the end of the day, you learn from experience, even if it does take hundreds or thousands of repetitions to do or understand something correctly. Be positive, keep calm and play the game :D

OK, pro tip always keep an eye on those heat sinks, if you shut down in the middle of a battle it is all over for you.
Also try and stay close to cover before engaging anyone at high range, so if they pull out some mad trick you haven't seen before you can take a step back and sort the mech out for the next encounter.
Or if you are really good go at it at full speed, get on their back and just lay down the pain, most people are used to just dealing with long range targets and break down when it gets up close and personal.
All excellent tips.

Also, OP, I hesitate to recommend this because it is kind of a freebirth move to pull, but have you tried legging? Unlike a lot (all?) of the other MW games, legging is instantly lethal in MW3. Leg armor is generally substantially weaker than torso armor.
This is why, if you're sole goal is to win, the best thing to do is go into battle with one of the fastest scout or medium mechs you can get equipped with a Gauss or two.

A few well placed shots to the knee and you'll take down even the most threatening of the assault-class mechs.

'Course, you could also do the honorable thing and just walk into battle with a 70+ ton missile-boat.

I'd say try hardcore. because in softcore, there are some shit weapons, some good weapons and a lot of absolutely bullshit weapons. the PP90M1, akimbo FMG9s, akimbo G18s, the Type 95, the striker, and others, all bullshit and completely unbalanced. In hardcore the reduced health levels out the playing field significantly. Been playing HC since CoD4 and only play SC because I have friends who don't like it. Funnily enough they're the ones that use those weapons I mentioned.

INCOMING RANT:

I really hope the next CoD has servers, because I am sick and tired of bunnyhoppers. If you can't aim fast enough to kill someone without jumping, you're doing it wrong. Go play Quake or something, where you're supposed to be jumping around like a rabbit on speed. I like my CoD tactical.

Haha, that's why a Jenner II-C laser boat is secretly the best mech in MW2. You zig-zag around with jump-jets and basically do this:

Despite being relatively new to the game, I'm kicking higher level ass with a set-up of either SCAR-L, P90 or Type 95 (depending on the map size and type), all silenced, with Quick-Draw and Blind-Eye.

My number one rule when playing pretty much any kind of shooter is 'Don't Be Predictable'. Every time you move in a way you could be expected to, you open yourself up to snipers and others who will punish you for it.
The more you learn about each map (how it plays out, where people rush etc.), the more success you will find.

Akimbo FMG's. Just run and shoot there is no need to aim. If you want to actually be good at the game rather then just annoy me though I would suggest you find a nice chest high wall and cover whatever corridor is there. Also play the objective. your KD will suffer but your spirit shall soar.
