Well i am by no means an expert but there are a few things you can try out, they might help you, they might not but hey ho. These are just off the top of my head so i apologise if they are not too good:
1. Experiment
The ability to create a class allows for a lot of flexibility when used correctly and it is important to exploit this for a few reasons. There are several different ways to play CoD, whether you want to focus on speed and running and gunning, stealth, or all out firepower, the chances are you can find a way to create a class that suits your play style. I would recommend that once you have found your preferred play style that you make some variations that a geared towards you. For example, I like to keep moving in CoD so i have three classes that are geared towards quick movement around the map, but each has a variation that means it is suitable for different situations, one is based on remaining undetected for example. I then use the fourth as a general purpose class with no fixed specialisation and the fifth varies but recently it has been based on firepower. I am constantly changing and tweaking different parts of each class from weapons and perks to killstreaks to try out new things and to see if i can improve the class. Now i am rambling so i shall move one.
2. Learn the maps
It is important to get an idea of what to expect on each map. Each map tends to be designed with a certain type of battle in mind such as long, medium or short range. There might even be maps with a mixture. Furthermore, each map has 'high traffic' areas where most of the player activity will take place. Once you get an idea of where these areas are on the maps you can exploit this information by avoiding these areas or setting up traps, flanking etc. Now i am not saying that you should sit down and study printouts of the maps (unless you want to) but you should learn about the maps just by playing them. The high traffic areas will become apparent based on the amount of fighting and kills/deaths you get in certain areas on the maps. It might take a while but you should learn all you need to learn based on your experiences. If you get a good enough knowledge you will even be able to predict other players movements reasonably well. I remember on Black Ops, i was able to get a few early kills based solely on my knowledge of the map and what players would do in the opening minute etc. Furthermore, this knowledge could save you a few deaths at times as you might be able to outmanoeuvre attacking enemies etc.
3. Play smart but have fun
Hopefully some of these helped you out but for all i know they could be non-sensical ramblings. Anyway, If you ever want a game just send me a message
