I think that in the original comics he could shoot waves of electromagnetism and make a shield around himself.
And he has that bad ass helmet that stops Xavier from controlling him, so...

I always felt the Xmen kind of used it mutation powers as an excuse to not properly characterize the people. Other superheroes usually have a origin story or way they got their powers and how it affected them as a person, whereas the Xmen usually just have to show an awkward scene from high school of their powers turning on and making a big fuss. Usually the people are only characterized by what side they were on, the forgiving side or the vengeful side. Also, the obvious tie to gay rights does kinda get in the way, mostly in that it is done so forwardly and without much subtlety that it gets pretty preachy.
Although it can be argued that the political undertone in X-men is tied to gay rights, as well as any oppressed minority group, it was really meant to be a commentary on the civil rights movement. Magneto and his crew represented the black nationalists and Xavier represented the group (who's name i can't remember) that felt they should become politicians and leaders themselves to fight from the inside. (if I am not mistaken)
Xavier is analogous to Martin Luther King, Jr.

Magneto is analogous to Malcolm X.

As for Magneto's powers, there's not much more I can say than has already been said. Magnetism is more powerful than people realize.

You don't have to be powerful to lead. Did Hitler blitzkrieg Europe all by himself? Did Obama take down Bin Laden himself? No.

back in the "good old days" when mutants were few and rare, the most powerful telekinetic was Jean Grey. She wasn't very powerful in contrast to magneto. she could only move certain things. magneto has the power to fly by using his magnetic powers, in comparrison to JG who could move anything but doesn't fly using her telekinetic abilities, there is a major differance in power. And he has a sheild to deflect the attacks. and charisma which can sway lots of people to do what he wants (soz for the bad spelling there, its late).

As many people have stated, this was just the early begining of the story, he still does seem to be learning how to control his powers. Sure there might be other characters out there who have stronger abilities but his true strength is his confidence and people follow confidence.

I assumed that Magneto was the X-men's biggest adversary, not just because of his raw power (which he does have a ton of) but also to draw attention to the juxtaposition of his philosophical beliefs with those of Professor X.

Granted, most super powers tend to break down when examined closely. Even something as simple as super speed ends up requiring a bunch of "secondary" powers in order to be remotely feasible.
Completely off topic, and I do sincerely apologize, But I have to ask...Do people ever actually ask you about your banhammer? If so, what do they ask?
Heh, no problem. I actually haven't had anyone ask about it yet. I think most people get the joke or at least the gist of it.

Umm.. magnetism is one of the four governing forces of the universe.

He's incredibly overpowered.

The science of magnetism begs to differ.

Controlling magnetism dependent on the level of skill has the potential to be an astoundingly overpowered ability. Its all in how it is used.
