Minecraft really needs multicore support.
Parts of it are already multithreaded, and were since the original techdemo video on YouTube, in particular chunk generation.

....Why does framerate effect gameplay? Seriously, I make all my games run at low rates to I get minimum online lag. I run League of Legends (great free game, try it) at 15 FPS 9/10 times and it runs fine. On minecraft.......my render distance is always low and I have it on fast so I don't really know.

My qualm with Notch is that he's only one man. If we had a full team of Notches, Minecraft would be beyond its beta that its at right now and we'd have so many other nice things.

I guess it depends what you are used to..

I cannot play a fps with under 60fps and any mmo/other genre games under 40fps without getting annoyed that its lagging :<

I've been running it with 40 fps with fast graphics and short view distance(and its been driving me crazy, I can't stand to have anything less than normal view distance >.<). Then again my old graphics card died on me, so I'm running it with the crap one that came with the computer.

Well, it always works fine for me on my sub-par laptop. Maybe that's the problem - your computer is too good?

My only complaint is lag in multiplayer, but that's another story.

My Minecraft works fine I get a pretty much constant 80fps on the highest settings even with the 256 by 256 texture packs on.

Earlier I was playing Minecraft and I noticed the framerate was down to the point where it was almost unplayable. I did have the settings at maximum but I have a pretty good PC and frankly, Minecraft shouldn't need barely any resources. Minecraft is one of the most inefficient games I've ever played in terms of resources and considering it isn't doing much in terms of graphics or physics, it should be able to run on a toaster. I think Notch really needs to make Minecraft more efficient although I'm aware it is made with Java so I'm asking for the impossible but it still annoys be when something this basic can't maintain an acceptable framerate. Does anyone else feel like Minecraft performs terribly for a game which really doesn't actually do much.
It runs on Java. There's your whole damn answer.

And anyways, I don't suffer intense fail with it, even online. It just renders a WHOLE LOT of chunks. The more you explore, the slower your game gets. This could be fixed, but it risks losing pieces of your work.

I like toast. I basically live on toast... just thought i'd share that with the group.

also, about minecraft, i've played the free version a few times but it just breaks on me. Should i get the proper one and if so, is there a way to buy it without having to pay on the internet? i don't trust internet purchases.

Does it really cause lag? I play a lot of games at a low FPS and they run without lag....or so they seem....maybe I'm too used to it.....CONSPIRACY!

Im pretty sure you are just used to it, before I upgraded my computer I used to be able to play games at 20-30fps without getting annoyed but now I'm used to pretty much never drop below 60 fps and if I do drop down to 40fps I notice it quite a lot.

Now i have to add commentary or the mods will write me up, apparently the video doesn't say enough... Dont agree, minecraft frame-rates always are rather high for me, I think its time to get your toaster checked out because it might not be toasting toast like a toaster toasts.'

It runs worse than CoD:BO and Crysis 2 multiplayer for me, and BO's not the most well-optimised game to begin with

OP's concern is legit
