Don't show up. The only way he could not let you quit is if he came to your house, tied you up, and dragged you to work in the bed of his truck.

Did you sign a contract agreeing to that? If you did not, then just don't bother to show up, he can't do shit about it. You may not be able to use him as a reference later for not giving two weeks notice, but I doubt you could do that anyway.

Putting in a 2 weeks would be too nice for this guy. Also I've already started working at a better job.
2 weeks notice is probably put in your contract, so you'd better do that.. It'd be kinda ruinous if everyone could quit when they wanted to, especially if 3/4th of the walmart staff would end up quitting like on black friday :p

He's bullshitting you. You never need to give any notice. It's well regarded, and could help you get a a good word from your former employer when applying for another job, but you don't HAVE to do it.

I work at a bad game store. Very bad. My boss' attitude has prompted me to quit. So I did (or at least attempted to last night). But I received a voice mail from him stating that I could not quit because I NEEDED to put in a 2 weeks notice and that he'll see me at work in the morning (today).

I'm pretty sure this is slavery? Can anyone help? My boss is a kind of guy who will sue anyone for anything so I'm trying to avoid anything crazy. But advice WILL go a long way.
He has a point, you need 2 weeks notice.

UNLESS

you get fired ;)
call him a fat fuck.

Just don't come in. Unless you're under some sort of contract that says you must turn in a two weeks notice, there isn't a damn thing he can do. I mean, what will he do, fire you? It's not like he can sue you for quitting when you have no legal obligation to keep working.

you other option is to walk anyway. they will probably give you a disciplinary without your attendance and and you will be fired. doesn't look good on a CV or for later references for a new job.
go the doctors and get signed off with stress for 2 weeks? amp it up take sick leave. job done?

Shit, now the escapist has to discuss employment law and the distinction from slavery. But for reference, this is slavery:

Get some perspective, you are not a prisoner being worked to death, you merely have a contractual obligation to work.

If you were dumb enough to sign an agreement that you'd give 2 weeks notice before leaving well that's like promising you will paint someone's house (or do some other chore) and then just not doing it. Otherwise, if you REALLY cannot work there for another 2 weeks then make your excuses and make them damn clear to him, so that he Empathises with your position. Remember, to be polite.

The 2 weeks notice is important so he can find someone else to do your job before you leave, otherwise he'll be short staffed or rush to employ someone who may be very unsuitable.

Put yourself in his shoes for a moment, he may be just a manager trying to earn enough to keep a family afloat but if his store doesn't make enough profit then he may get fired.

A lot of places require at least 2 weeks notice and it is written into your contract. Breaking it can be messy, and since other employers may contact your current boss or company messy is never good.

You put in the two weeks notice. If you don't, then they can't find a replacement for you. If you quit, you're gonna be asked to list your past jobs on a resume and a lot of them will find out about this and fear you'll do the same to them.

Put in the notice and suck it up for 2 weeks.

At this point, I wouldn't go back. The fact that he called you to rub the "two weeks notice" policy in your face tells me he's not going to be a good reference for future employment. Just make sure on your future applications that you request that job not be contacted and be truthful in why. You felt the job was being unreasonable, and your boss made it difficult for you up until the last day. Other jobs will respect your honesty as long as you don't make it sound like you were QQing over small things.

I dont really see how you not liking him has anything to do with making work suck more for everyone else that works there. Because that's what a 2 weeks notice is for, so they can rehire and not have to call up everyone else to work overtime.

So, no matter how much of a jerk this guys is being, you're being a jerk by not giving a 2 weeks notice.
