#1. Tell him to go Fuck himself
#2. Stay home for 2 weeks
#3. ???
#4. Profit!!

But on topic... the whole two weeks notice is courtesy, unless you signed a contract since you were hired (however long ago that was) if he says that you signed one tell him to show you it, if he doesn't then tell him to piss off and walk out. It's not exactly the nicest thing to do, but if he wants to be a jerk then you can be one too. I don't think he deserves two weeks notice if he's going to be a complete douchebag about it or just being a prick in general.

At my last job, I got both my manager AND my district manager yelled at by our regional Vice President! The manager deserved it, everyone hated her because she was a gigantic ***** and showed up hung over half the time, and the District Manager was just an ass who tried bitching everyone out because he was the kind of guy who was constantly angry or surly and wanted to make everyone else's life a living hell

Hm. At my work, it would be highly appreciated if we notify our boss two weeks in advance if we want to quit, so he can find a replacement and fill the holes in the schedule. We've had plenty of people being total dicks and leaving on the spot. Those people wouldn't last very long in my workspace anyway. No legal action ever chases those people, only my boss being pissed off. But then, I live in the Netherlands and I work in a greenhouse with tons of teenagers - I guess chasing quitters with laywers would be pointless and overkill.

Wow, you say he's the only asshole. For one, If you signed a workers contract, which in America you would have had to to legally be paid, It's a policy in nearly every company to have a 2 week notice. And even if not, you could have the courtesy to do it just so he can find replacment.

Couple options here.

1 - Tell him you already put in your two weeks but he was too stupid to notice (or something like that). Thus, keeping you here longer is not doable.

2 - Tell him other obligations have come up (such as your new job) and you have to quit sooner than the recommended 2 weeks.

3 - Tell him to fuck off since you QUIT. People quit on a whim all the time. they just don't show up. If they are considered "quit" they get "fired" at some point anyway. Simple as that.

4 - Fake your own death in front of him so he won't bother you ever again.

5 - Fake his death in front of his loved ones but the word "fake" is completely optional.

6 - Um... Eat a sandwich... all these ideas are making me hungry.

I'm a little surprised at how many people don't seem to be familiar with professional contracts here.

Disclaimer: This is all in general as many have pointed out it depends on your contract or in the case of non-personal contracts the company's employee handbook. Varying parts of which may or may not be binding pending your jurisdiction.

If you are an hourly position you can generally terminate at will with no ill effects if you don't mind negating a possible recommendation or benefits. (ex: health insurance or pension, again pending your system and agreements)

If you are salaried your contract often allows you to cash out holiday/sick time if you give two weeks notice. Walking out the door without the notice often forfeits the perk of cashing out unused time. This also tends to piss of your employer and in close nit industries may be a very risky venture. Salaried employees also tend to have those non-compete clauses in their contracts; their enforcement also varies from company to company and jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Quitting period can often negate your ability to collect unemployment in many places, check your local laws if this is a concern.

Then get fired. Get a severance check. You get to quit and get more money.
That's a good idea unless he's worked there for over 3 months. If you've worked there for a year, end on good terms or you won't have him as a reference. Don't burn your bridges, because employers will look at your resume and go "Where did you work for this entire year and a half?" because you left him off your resume. That's a hint that you either couldn't get a job (unemployable) or you burnt your bridges and that's also a bad sign.

You need to give your two weeks notice before you just quit. That way he can find a replacement for you. Give your two weeks notice, balance both jobs, and then keep them as your reference. Everyone wins.

Dunno bout where you are but in the UK giving notice is only necessary unless your contractually obligated to give a notice period or you want to use your employer as a good reference.

As for your situation? Guy sounds like a twat, so my advice would be go into work and promptly tell every customer that you meet that you wouldn't buy a game from said store if someone had a gun to your head. Recommend another store, perhaps where your currently working if they sell games.

Failing that, into work and take a nice dump on his desk. Thats bound to go well.

show up to work and be a dick to the customers :) everyone wins!

tell all the customers the store is ripping them off and not to shop there, record your manager's reaction and post it on youtube

oh and to everyone saying he needs a reference, in the US people are so afraid of getting sued nobody will give a bad reference, they will say "our policy is only to verify employment dates"

I dont know about there, but here, you need to give notice of equivilant of one pay period, for instance, i get paid every 4 weeks, therefore i need to give 4 weeks notice... ITs how it is and how it always has been... It gives them time to find a replacement. Getting fired just looks bad on a resume and you dont get as many payouts as what you could get if you resign

I've never understood the "two weeks notice" thing, most say it's the polite professional thing to do.

When people get laid off though, where's the two weeks notice then, the polite professional courtesy everyone talks about? Seems kind of double standard an employee needs to give notice but the company can terminate anyone for whatever.

The only reason you give two weeks notice is if you want to use them as a reference in the future. You can quit or don't show up, but keep in mind if there's going to be a large gap in your resume because of it you'll have to explain why you were unemployed for that time. Since you won't tell a potential employer you up and quit your last job.

Choice is honestly yours, I really don't see any legal recourse your current employer can do, sounds like bullying or a threat to me. You will want to submit a letter of resignation though, just so it's down on paper you quit.

If you've managed to get another job, then I guess you're fine. The biggest reason people give two-week notices is to avoid getting an even worse reference. Law limits what the previous employer can say about you, but it's possible for something like that to come up. It can also have an impact on unemployment, depending on your area's policies.

However.

The main reason to give two weeks' notice is because of courtesy. You're giving this establishment time to find a replacement rather than leaving them in a lurch out of spite. In most cases, courtesy is our way of showing people that they and their feelings matter to us... but never forget that even when the other person is a dick, behaving courteously shows that you are a courteous person.

Otherwise, it's like those idiots that do a shit job at some fry cook gig. Yeah, it's no one's dream job, but by doing it poorly do you "prove" it's a good job? No. You "prove" that you're a lazy bugger that can't even do THIS right. Why would anyone give that guy a better job?

How you leave a job reflects on YOU far faster than it reflects on that company. You won't "teach them" anything by leaving in a huff. The universe does not abide 'lessons.' Not saying you did any of this, but it's just a general thing to keep in mind regarding bad jobs and job-change etiquette.

I was going to say do the two weeks because you might need the reference to get another job but if you all ready have one then fuck him.

If it's in the contract that you should give 2 weeks notice, then do that. It's very simple. You're adult enough to work: You're adult enough to keep your word.
