My Computer Thinks I'm Offline, But I'm Not

some programs have decided that i am offline, and therefore will not work, Steam wouldnt sign in, so i went to re-install it after trying various other things, and it wont install because i am apparently offline, Origin only boots up in offline mode as it thinks im offline, McAfee Security(i dont use it, it's just on mny computer) thinks im offline to

i can surf the internet fine, watch videos etc, but something is going on.

i have tried restarting my modem to, didnt work.


anyone have any thoughts as to why this might be?

Check to see if your firewall has it set so that certain programmes can't access the internet. Probably a good start.

It would require you to go into your router and check if certain ports for certain programs are open. I suggest you use google for the specific program at hand. I.e. for steam you search for "Opening ports for Steam" and there should be link to the steam forums where someone has put up the instructions.

Otherwise I suggest you check your computer settings, network settings, check for problems and make it forget the current connection and set it up again.

Anything beyond that I would not know. Not so much a techie myself.

You in the UK? 'Cause BT broadband has been having problems all day. The helplines are jammed up with so many people calling them. Our office broadband went on the fritz for a couple of hours this afternoon, only came back an hour ago.

Of course if you're not in the UK that whole post of mine was a big old waste of time, but hey.

yeah, Norton Antivirus, i reset it so it should have got rid of anything that was blocking steam

Words cannot describe the emotional pain I have towards your computer, you're doing three things wrong right off the bat:

1)You have Norton installed
2)You have McAfee installed
3)You are running two antiviruses at the same time (this causes conflicts)

First things first, get a new AV program, I would recommend the free download of Avast [http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download] and uninstalling the other two AVs. Two AVs running at the same time will cause system conflicts, no ifs ands or buts about it.

Quick EDIT: I'm not being a douche, it's just that McAfee and Norton both were quite happy to ignore trojans that I had on my system so I react poorly to seeing them on a computer. I'm quite opposed to AVs you have to pay for, which is why I use ones that have an upgraded form that you can choose to pay for if you like them.

last time i used avast, my computer dies due to viruses, norton has been great so far deleting trojans etc, and i doubt my anti virus has anyhting to do with it as steam has been working for ages, and ever sin ce i have swapped ISP's it has been having problems, im currently on hold with my ISP as i type, but i was just wondering if anyone here had some ideas, and i kknow you are not being a douche lol

It still stands that you will have conflicts with multiple AVs installed on your computer, get rid of all but one of them.

Sometimes your system clock will get set to some weird year or something and it will cause odd things to happen with certain programs, its possible its messing with steam and origin.
