Yeah, My dad has run into a few problems with the law due to his appearance. Nicest and gentlest guy in the world, but the long hair, thick beard and sunken eyes combined with the ratty clothes and ocassional leather jacket make him look like a prime suspect for just about anything. He's been frisked, detained, and threatened by the police at random times.
Then theres a few of my coworkers. Black security guard gets it all the time and Arab coworkers get some bad profiling.

Yup Racism and bigotry is alive and well the world over.

To be honest, just sounds like you're jumping to conclusions, do you have any evidence whatsoever that the investigation is because of racism? It's much more likely that someone just hates your family so keeps reporting you.

I'd love to grow a beard. I grew an epic beard once, but was mistaken for a middle eastern Muslim extremist. Simply because of my darker skin. So i shaved it off. How frustrating.

my dad got a lot of respect (probably fear) from strangers because he was dark skinned enough to look like a gypsie.

also he looks just like a muslim in a white robe and beard , i'm glad he shaved it off and stopped wearing that costume otherwise we would be in trouble at the airport.

No, but I have been accused many times of stereotyping other people, simply because they say Im an American (i do not stereotype anyone)

...I realize the reason my father is so 'suspicious' is because of his dark skin. He has a very dark Italian skin color that could be mistaken for Middle Eastern, and my uncle's is even darker...
Now that's just assumptions right there. Perhaps it's 'cause his appearance matches a well-known bomber? Perhaps it's because he acted suspicious one day at the wrong time?

Don't go and grasp the skin-colour arguement too fast. It's very possible that the tone of his skin has nothing to do with it.

And even if it were so, they're just profile-searching.

Crooked cops got on my family's case a bit because of my mother's Greek roots but that's a long story I don't wanna derail the thread about.

Lot of kids thought I was English when I first started school. Didn't help I had quite an English accent.

No, mainly becuase i'm (and my family for that matter) the whitest person on the planet.

Althugh i'm sorry to hear about this happening to your family, sometimes people are just idiots.

EDIT:Although along long time ago people used to belive i was a druggie in gradeschool becuase of mypale skin ann the constant dark bags around my eyes.

Ironically most of them became drug user's after school.

Sad to say, but there are still plenty of people in the world who will look at you with disdain or even outright hatred simply because of the color of your skin.

When I visited London one time, My cousin and I got quite a few dirty looks and even got into a brawl in a pub because of our skin color.

I'm assuming every time said police officer came 'round your dad would say "I'm Italian, you moron. Not Middle Eastern."

You want to hear a funny story?
So we go on this field trip to Six Flags for physics.
My friend Yosef (Palestinian) walks through the gates and security, stands next to a security guard, and starts saying muslim prayers in arabic and english.

My friend Arpiet, a tall, quiet indian kid, walks through the gates and security, gets pulled to the side, and they make him remove his belt while they check him with a metal detecting wand.

I loled hard.
Good God. Even I wouldn't joke around security like that.

OT: Well, I heard once that people think I am an anti-social creep because I rarely show my face in the day,
Yosef would later go to a big YMCA (Young Man's Christian Association) function for BPA club at school, and was voted to lead a closing prayer. While running for the vote thing, he was saying how he was going to make Illinois into the first all muslim state, and I forget the details, but his closing prayer was arabic and somewhat... controversial.

Quite frankly, your friend has more balls than brains; I am amazed he wasn't lynched there and then.

Still, I applaud his bravery.
Very much so. I think he got suspended from BPA but I'm not sure. Hilarious though.
