I agree with many of the other posters. Go with Tali as a first name and, if you must, go with Zora as a middle name, but don't do the full Tali'Zora as a first name.

I would totally name my hypothetical Daughter Lufia. Good thing that anyone outside of very specific gaming circles would even know where that is from.

OT: you are crazy. But the world needs crazy. I suggest naming her Tali and her second name zorah. Also the kods on the playground won't even get it.
So would her middle name be Erim, or is that her nickname?

Congratulations on your baby. And no you are just being short sighted.

People will ask is that Russian or something? and you will have to lie or say no its from a video game 99 people out of a hundred will think its cringey.

What if your daughter plays mass effect and hates it and dislikes Tali? She would be pretty annoyed you chose it.

I say go for it!

If it's too difficult to get people to spell it right, she could just call herself Tali.

And on the subject of bullying - kids will always find some way to make fun of any name.

The name in itself is beautiful, yes, but when it comes to the practical use of a name like that in the real world, I'd say the apostrophe combined with the unusual name will create very annoying life-long problems for your daughter (assuming she keeps it).

It's all the small things like having to spell it over the phone and then repeat yourself when people find it weird, always having to confirm that apostrophe on the form is not just a pen mark or mistake, or even things like name plates/badges/login usernames -- the apostrophe will cause problems. Even in the best case scenario where she absolutely loves the uniqueness of it, those little time-wasting snags in her every day life would probably outweigh the aesthetic value of the name in the long run.

wat... Pls tell me this did not happen.

Do I share a planet with these people?
Why yes, you do. And it has happened quite a few times. Enjoy the sadness! Or drink yourself unconscious, which is what i feel like doing.

Yes you are.

Far be it from me to give anyone advice on childrens names, since I have none, but please don't treat your child as part of your nerd paraphernalia. If you wanna show you like the character of Tali, wear a T-shirt.

Don't subject your own child to a silly name for the rest of her life, just because you and your wife liked Mass Effect once.
I agree with this. While personally I think Tali is an acceptable name (if only just), the fact that it's chosen because of a video game character preference is just awful.

Add to that that she'll one day find out her parents named her after a videogame character you had the option to fuck. Talk about awkward.
God, I hadn't even thought about that... *shudder*

Why do you guys all say "Kids can be cruel"... here is a thread full of people who think that name is strange - or even stupid. And if you would meet someone called that way - you would think exactly that.

"Tali'Zorah... is that russian?"
"No, it's an alien my parents had sex with"
"WHA-"
"from a video game"
"still - WHAT?!"
"They liked the character... I don't know"
"oh... ok... soooo- why haven't you changed it yet?"

...

Ehhh, it's a bit odd. But there's been FAR worse names given to children. I'd actually much prefer a Tali'Zorah (at least you're leaving off the vas Normandy :p) over pretty much anything on this list:

http://www.cracked.com/article_15765_the-20-most-bizarre-celebrity-baby-names.html

"Sage Moonblood"?
"Tu Morrow"?
"Jermajesty"?
"Blanket"?
Frickin' "Audio Science"?!

Seriously, what's with celebrities and insisting their children have the strangest names possible? I guess when you're rich and famous you can a bit eccentric. Like George Foreman who has 5 sons named George and a daughter named Georgette.

if you're going to name her after a squadmate, why not name her after one who is useful and likable instead?
Wrex, Garrus, Ashley, Liara? You have options.

I recall a Freakonomics episode a while back, where a sociologist conducted an experiment on the effects of names on his own children - naming them "M" and "Yo". As I recall, the names had no detrimental effect on their lives, and both were rather happy with their names.
So, there you have it.
Yes, because this "study" with a sample size of TWO is totally a proof for anything. In contrast to the studies that show that e.g. typical "under class" names (celebrity names and such) lead to lower grades in school and lower income later, everything else equal.
From what you are saying, you have not listened to the whole episode, in which such concerns and other studies are talked about. Studies you quote are just as problematic, albeit in a different way.

I've read a lot of comments on here and we all seem to have a general consensus that naming the child Tali'Zorah is a pretty terrible idea because she'll get picked on in school.

... Isn't it a little sad that any and all differences makes you a bully target? That anything that makes you stand out even in the smallest way is automatically met with derision and criticism? I know it's programed into us biologically and it's a learned behavior to overcome it. But it's still depressing.

To the OP, if she's going to get picked on in school, she's going to get picked on. If it's not her name it'll be her hair style, her weight, he height, her clothes. They'll find something. What you named her isn't going to matter.

You don't know how happy you made me. Not only does someone remember this two decade old game, but has an even more obscure reference than Lufia. Erim would definately be a second name, as a nickname it would confuse the hell out of everybody.

a) I'm fairly certain that Tali is her first name and the Zorah is her surname, considering her father is Admiral Rael'Zorah.
b) Tali [http://www.ourbabynamer.com/baby-names-Tali.html] is a real name. Hebrew in origin, meaning "dew of heaven".
It is. Their culture puts the given and family name first followed by the ship they're attached to, hence why her name changed to Tali' zorah vas normandy in the second game.

As a result, if you named your kid "Tali Zorah" you'd be cramming a given and family name into your child's given name... quite a mouthful. Best to split it up.

Honestly, I'm not as critical of the decision as some. Naming a child after an individual you respect or admire, in the hopes that those qualities about them you respect/admire will be passed on, is a time honored tradition, real and fictional alike. There's a reason such a huge portion of western names come from the bible, after all. Provided you don't give your daughter a bombastic first name that takes more than one break for air to spell out, then you're not really doing anything that differently.

Anyone who thinks you are can try to voice their complaints to my son: Hercules Sebastion Rockefeller.

Its gonna suck once she has to deal with the bureaucracy.
"Sorry, could you repeat that?"

I know. I have to spell my family name every.effing.time. Its annoying.

Some people will assume they know how to write it. Some people will be wrong. Which is even worse.

And yeah, school will suck, but tbh - its probably gonna suck anyway. If its not the name, then it will be body weight, hair color, the type of pencil used.... At least you know what will hit her. So there is that.... i guess its kinda good.

And lets be honest, before she will hit the school - the kids at the playground will be lucky to know who the hell Mari-oh is, let alone Tali.

Every time something or someone reminds me of lufia, a little sad tear appears in my eye. DAMN YOUUUUU!!!!!1111

I was pretty embarrassed when I learned my middle name came from Dune, and I even liked that book. Personally, I wouldn't even name a pet after a video game or something similar...it's just too nerdy and you're not the one who has to live with it and explain it whenever someone asks. As someone with a first name that's also kind of unusual, people DO ask.

The only exception is "Thwomp." For a cat.
At least cats are unlikely to get picked on at recess.

"Thwomp" does sound awesome, though.

Yes, and we're not berating the name on a routine basis or singling out the kid for having it. Things fairly likely to happen with kids.

Personally, I grew up around enough weird names I probably wouldn't bat an eyelash.

Aside from the fact that you've given her a video game characters name, you've also given her a video game characters first AND last name as her first name.

Unless you're making the "Zorah" part a middle name or something then she'll be Tali'Zorah *middle name* *last name*. Hell of a mouthfull.
