Restored by a one-two combo of Shingeki no Kyojin and Suisei no Gargantia.
I was liking Gargantia up until episode 4. I was bored, to be honest, and I'm worried that it's going to be the meat and potatoes of the story... with content the likes of which we saw in 1-3 just punctuating the proceedings. Gen-san has lost his touch since he stopped dealing in gore and rocks-fall-everyone-dies plotlines (Fate Zero for example). Psychopass, his most recent effort before this, was also terrible.

Minor thematic spoiler.
I'll still watch, but I'm really not interested in the "soldier learns to have warm feels" developmental episodes, and I think there are going to be lots of those.

Personally, unless you were having serious fun last episode, I'd recommend switching to or supplementing your Gargantia with Kakumeiki Valvrave. It's a bit like Technoman Tekkaman Blade meets Gundam. It's very, very good.

Might I also recommend this season: high-fantasy-turned-urban-fantasy-anime Hataraku Maou-sama! and also-mecha-anime Majestic Prince.

Valvrave OP.

Majestic Prince commercial preview.

Edit: Actually, I'm doing MJP a huge disservice by just mentioning it in passing toward the end of a post. I think it's a little better than Valvrave, and I think that both the "other" mecha anime this season are somewhat better than Gargantia. But you must decide for yourself.

I think you just did the single greatest match up in history, I have no words to describe the awesomeness with which you graced this world save for two.

Thank you.

While I never really lost faith, I was starting to when I'd started watching too many Harem/Slice of Life animes. I like some Slice of Life anime every now and then, but I had so many.
Then I found it.
Guilty Crown, oh wow that anime got me hyped right back up again. While there's some definite cliches in the plot (Character accidentally receives power, futuristic city filled with plague) it's got this great soundtrack and design to it that I loved. The main characters were put together really well (and one of the only anime's where I've seen trauma done well) and the plot had some interesting points in it.

It might not sound all that amazing from my description, but wow I'm so glad I stumbled upon it.

Never was a big fan of anime, so can't really say I've ever lost my faith much. But I could say that my faith in fantasy fiction has been greatly restored over the past year through Studio Ghibli films, The Vision of Escaflowne, The Witcher, A Son of Ice and Fire and Berserk.

I keep watching animes looking for that one series that really represents the medium. Nearly everyone anime I watch is either terribly paced or poorly written. Time to add these shows to my list.

OT: My friend showed me Darker Than Black and asides from its rather mediocre S1 finale, I'm enjoying myself.
A rather odd phrasing. Are you looking for the series that is the "face" of anime or a series that truly shows its potential? Because from what I've heard, Bleach, Naruto and One Piece are pretty much the public face of anime.

And if pacing in anime is an issue to you, I'd gladly recommend The Vision of Escaflowne (hell, I'd recommend it for any reason). It really doesn't slog at all except for maybe one episode out of 26.
No, no, no. I don't mean the "face" of anime, only that I'm searching for an example of the medium that I can point to and say, "Wow, that was completely blew me away." I don't want to be one of those people who just sourly say "I don't like this weeboo garbage," but nearly every anime I watch contains something, whether its writing, structure, or characterization that tends to cheapen the experience for me. Instead of thinking, "Wow," I think "meh, they could have done this better."

Ah yes, those two shows are definitely the 'to-watch' shows this season, at least this far anyway.

As for what restored my faith in anime? Well I never lost faith, so theres that. But I will say that what got me back into anime as much as I am now is, I'm embarrassed to say, Sword Art Online. Its complete and utter crap and I love it for being that. Other than that, The Unlimited Hyoubu Kyousuke was damn good.

Okay, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Attack on Titan becomes stupid after a bit. This is all I am going to say without spoiling it too much but the protagonist has supper powers, and there are others like him. There isn't much separating it from most other Anime.
Aww...too bad. I just hope it does not resemble Bleach/ Naruto levels of BS with regard to powers. I'm still interested in the mystery of the Titans though...where do they originate from and why are they the way they are. I hope the anime does not drop the ball on this front, that would be a shame.
It's not as bad as he mentions, if anything it only furthers the mystery of the Titans which despite the manga being farther ahead, has only gotten deeper with no clear answer.

@Hannibal, try FLCL, Serial Experiments Lain, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Ghost in the Shell if you haven't, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Kemonozume, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex.
And I agree, there are too few titles like this. Heck, name ONE decent adult themed seinen series from the past 2-3 years. That's the reason I haven't wacthed anime in a year and half and after I finish my exams and start watching again, I will watch old stuff like Noir, Simoun, Mushishi, Basilisk, Detroit Metal City and such. If someone can reccommend such an original new series maybe my faith will be restored.

My faith in Anime hasn't been completely restored, but I think part of that is just because I'm older now, and the type of anime that the kids are into these days and the studios make don't appeal to my 30-something self as much as they used to appeal to my 20-something self.

The last Anime that got me REALLY exited was Last Exile. It helps that I love airships and steampunk and Last Exile does both really, really well.

EDIT - I should add that I'm currently watching Samurai Seven and enjoying it pretty well. It's no Last Exile or Berserk, but it's better than a lot of other stuff I've seen lately.

Death Note did that for me a couple of years ago, back when Naruto and Bleach were becoming popular, both of which I lost interest in the first couple of episodes. I don't think it's as great as I did back then, but it still holds a special place in my heart (no pun intended.)

The only other anime to do that afterwards was Puella Magi Madoka Magica. That made me feel like a kid again, being excited for every episode to come out. It's been two years since, and that hype still hasn't died down.

As for Attack on Titan and Gargantia, I'm enjoying them both. Gargantia is probably Urobuchi's least Urobuchi-est work so far (at least, at the time of this writing. Never know when things will go dark) but I'm really enjoying it. I like it a hell of a lot better than Psycho Pass. I'm also actually enjoying Aku no Hana, too. Blah blah blah say what you want about the animation, but I'm getting more and more intrigued with each episode, and it has moments that are pretty tense and creepy.

My faith in anime will be restored when they revisit gantz they didn't even get to the cool shit in the anime the one door they never open in the anime which I find rather stupid is full of awesome vehicles and weapons from previous people who were in the gantz made it to 100 points and wished for stuff like beam swords and bad ass vehicles and what not. instead you get to see essentially the beginning but none of the mid or end which kinda annoys the hell out of me.

I guess my faith in anime was never really broken...

because I rarely watch anime , only the short and strong ones. I know there's plenty silly, cheesy, perverted, dragged-out animes out there, but I simply don't watch them.
But boy did I love watching Elfen Lied and Death Note. ^^

This shouldn't be surprising, but I knew this had to do with Shingeki no Kyojin just by reading the title of your post. XD

It is an amazing show, I haven't been so interested in a cartoon world since FMA.

Detroit Metal City is the only anime you need to watch.
Maybe I just found it refreshing because all the characters are in their mid 20's and not middle/high school students.

Based soley on the content provided on the openings of the two animes, I'm more interested in watching Suisei no Gargantia more so than Shingeki no Kyojin. The reason being is that Suisei no Gargantia reminds me of another anime that I am completely fond of: Eureka seveN.

They both seem to have a mecha centered plot, have characters that are soaring through the air with some form of tool/machine, the characters are stylized and appealing, the plot seems mysterious and intriguing, and there's a cast of diverse and hopefully interesting individuals.

With Shingeki no Kyojin, it seems a bit more confusing and there's a lot of questions that don't rise a lot of interest. Is this the future, past, or an alternate reality or timeline? Are the swinging attached cables on their bodies a gimmick or central to the plot? Why are they fighting giants who seem to have no clue what's going on or are not harming anyone? What ARE the giants? I would probably want to check it out, but it's not that appealing to me.

Well I either find something good to watch (Like Toradora),
or I find something completely new and get into that.

Attack on Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin is one of these new anime I can actually get into.
I mean so far I'm loving the story, it has a variety of characters (I think. :p) and it has a basic mystery to it.

Plus it is keeping up a good pace.

So yeah, I'm not losing my hope anytime soon.

I feel the same way about Death Note. It was a great watch, but it doesn't hold up well to multiple viewings. When you're watching it for the first time though, there are many "OMG I HAVE TO WATCH THE NEXT EPISODE TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT" moments.

I might give that Suisei no Gargantia a shot. Couldn't make it through a single epsidoe of Titan without hating the main character and losing interest in the plot, though, so gonna pass on the rest of that show.

As for the series that made me care again after years of watching no anime? JoJos Bizarre Adventure, ofcourse. It's the best thing ever made.
He is definitely an annoying character at first. However, by the time you arrive at the end of episode 4, there is a fairly big chance your opinion of him will change. But if you have no interest in the plot, then I guess it would be pointless to continue. I would like to know more of the origin and nature of the titans so I will continue to watch.
