Actually the idea was first presented to me many years ago in a novel called Stranger in a Strange Land , if you haven't read it even considering it's age it's still a top rate sci fi novel. Over the years it's kept coming back to me, and I've considered how often people laugh at others misfortune and at our differences.
Eventually I just came to conclusion that even though it was stated in a work of fiction I can't deny it. When I look at what is generally considered comedy, it's embarrassing, or differential, or down right cruel and on the whole it backs up that theory.
There's also that old saying of laugh so you don't cry... or something to that effect.
At any rate I've never been able to disprove it, so as of now I'm considering it a proven theory.
