I'm about to get a PS3, and this will be my first real console (I've been a largely PC gamer up until now). However, my budget for games is somewhat limited and at the moment I can probably only afford one or two. I've had Red Dead redemption recommended to me by a friend, but I was wondering what the escapist community thought was a good game to kick start my PS3 Gaming.

In an ideal world, it would be something with a great story that I could also play multiplayer, both online and splitscreen. Beyond that, style or genre wise I'm not too fussed :)

MGS4 is a great way to start your PS3 Gaming. But only if you have played the other games in the series.

Also, Resistance 1 and 2.

All of the games I can think of other than RDR are better on PC.

Demon's Souls.

I cannot recommend this highly enough. No splitscreen, but the online is integrated into the single player.

Can't go wrong with Red Dead Redemption.

And if you're thinking of exclusives, I wouldn't know if they were good, but those Resistance games were lauded as an exclusive a lot. Again, I don't know if they're good though.

I'm disappointed no one mentioned Ratchet and Clank yet.

Seriously, get Ratchet and Clank. All the games.

Uncharted and Uncharted 2 are the must-own exclusives for the PS3. Period.

Anything else is gravy.

Red Dead Redemption is a very a good game, but the Uncharted series is really good as well.

You'll probably want to get the first one first and then if possible buy the second.

Ratchet and clank: Crack in time was a really fun game for me. Aside from that maybe heavy rain

I have a ps3 myself but very few of the games I have stand out

Folklore, Resonance of Fate, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Nier.

Those are my top picks. Unfortunately, only MGS4 has multiplayer out of those ones but these are the PS3 games I have enjoyed the most.

I haven't got a PS3, but if I did have one the first games I'd buy would be Uncharted 1/2 and inFamous.

I really want to play the Uncharted games, but I can't justify buying one for 3 games.

inFamous was the first game I got, plus Sony has a thing where you get inFamous and a controller for like $60 I think.

Ah, that was my first one, and I loved every second of it. That said, Red Dead Redemption is a safer choice, a very good game.

For me when I got my PS3 it was easy to choose inFamous, Uncharted 1&2 and the Ratchet & Clank games since they are exclusives and GREAT. But don't rule out games like Dirt 2 or Grid for those of us who like racing, both have long single player careers and there are still diehard fans playing online. Also in the sheer fun department Soul Calibur IV is a great fighter and Pure is a nice arcade racer.

Story is same as below, but it's insane fun with a friend: Borderlands
A story good for a few laughs: ModNation or LittleBigPlanet
I've heard good things about Killzone 2
I love transformers: War for Cybertron, but there is no Split-screen
MGS4
Ratchet and Clank
All I can think of right now...

Isn't it weird how most of the games people on here seem to rave about on the PS3, I don't like.

Resistance 1 & 2, motor storm (either), MGS4, modnation racer are good the rest of the exclusives are utter crap to me, again it's all opinions but I love those ones so take from that what you will.

Ratchet and Clank, Bioshock... the orange box, uhhm fable 2. Those are my favourite games and in my eyes they can't go wrong.

and Uncharted 2.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY: try to get a backwards compatible PS3. Then, get a load of ps2 games.
