Right now I am hooked on Demons Souls and 3D Dot Game Heroes.. both are $39 new and 3D Dot is an old school RPG that is a ton of fun and Demons Souls as mentioned here is a hard but very good and rewarding game.

Away from the RPG genre -

Uncharted 2 is great, even the multiplayer is fun.
Killzone 2 is at a price drop and is one of the better FPS graphics you'll see on any console
Little Big Planet is another very unique game, price has dropped on it too
Metal Gear Solid 4

All of these games I listed are found in any store pretty much for 29-39 bucks new and pretty much must-haves IMO

Currently playing Demon's souls, it's incredible, if only the last boss wasn't such a cheat.
You're talking about False King Allant, right?
I'd take him over the Flamelurker any day. At least Allant gives you some room to breathe once in a while.
He gave you time to breathe? When I fought him he was zipping about the room like he was wearing rocket skates.
Flamelurker was nasty too, but at least the thief ring worked on him, which Allant seems to be unaffected by. For Flamelurker I just ran from one end of the area to the other and started firing at him untill he charged me, at which point I'd run back to the other side.

Thief ring works on Allant, you just need to use it straight away.

That's how you set him up for the Poison Cloud strategy.

I bought a playstation to escape from the kinds of games that made the XBox so clearly not for me.

So that's why I was disappointed to discover that Uncharted is a game of the "Billions of dudes want to murder you variety."

I will never, ever, ever play Uncharted 2 or even complete Uncharted one because nothing is worth the punishment that these games consider rewards.

That said: Assassins Creed II is, in my opinion, the best we've done so far in terms of gameplay. It's amazing. You deserve this game.

Infamous was a big reason I switched, too. I had already owned Prototype, but it falls over itself in the story department. I bought both for PS3 though. Infamous feels like an adventure, Prototype feels like a power fantasy. Both have their place in your collection.

it's not a trick: Saint's Row 2 is fun, concentrated like hard candy into nealry weaponized form. There's no skill involved, and everything about the story is a joke, but it's a joke that the game itself is in on. To give an example? the Car Customizer store is called "Rim Jobs." If that's not something you give a little juvenile chuckle to, stay away from this game, because it is only that. Trouble is: I love that. "Here is a sandbox, now just play in it."

Red Dead Revolver was also not kidding. Skip GTA IV and play this game instead, because thematically, the sandbox-taken-seriously thing is better suited to the old west. And in terms of the game puttering along and giving you stuff, RDR gets into it much quicker. None of this "Oh, the game really picks up when you hit hour five" bullshit. about the only thing you can't do right away is lasso dudes.

That's what I think anyway, and you can take it or leave it. but if any of your friends ever seriously tells you to buy Genji: Days of the Blade, you should think long and hard about remaining friends with that person.

Why is that? I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm really curious as to why you won't give 'em a chance.

OT: Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls (granted, it's a game that is either "love it" or "hate it"), and inFamous

inFamous was the first game I got, plus Sony has a thing where you get inFamous and a controller for like $60 I think.
This and LittleBig Planet. Definitely must haves, especially with the sequels just over the horizon :)

Ah, that's what I tried the first time, but he just rushed me the minute I went through the fog gate, and I couldn't infect him with poison, guess I just need to keep trying.

I bought Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and I get the sense that a huge part of what everybody loves about it is exactly what I hate about it. It's the game that helped me realize I don't like shooting guns.

But I can tell you in a few moments of cutscene what I hate about Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. There's a part where Nathan Drake runs into a new clearing of ruin and takes a look at his map. While he's looking down, a bunch of dudes pop up from behind barrels and trucks and shoot at him. The screen flashes red, to let you know that he's taking damage. That is my experience with Uncharted. A game that is ABOUT finding out where to go next, and while you're trying to find out where to go ne-- BUNCH OF DUDES WITH GUNS. And then, when I solve this or that puzzle, My reward is a bunch of dudes I have to kill. No thank you, Naughty Dog, please make Jak & Daxter HD instead.

in brief: I don't like shooting, and it felt like the game depends heavily on me liking shooting

As an owner of the Playstation 3 console, I enjoy giving recommendations to fellow gamers.

As of late, I feel a good start on a gaming library for your console, considering your low budget, would be to either purchase bargain games such as:
-Uncharted
-MGS4
-Motorstorm
-Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
-Killzone
-Infamous
-LittleBigPlanet
-Rock Band 2 (If you include the whole set, be prepared to cough up some cash, otherwise purchase a guitar only)
-God of War Collection
-Resistance:Fall of Man
These games can be usually found on-the-cheap at local retailers. Among those recommendations, your friend recommended Red Dead Redemption and as I've heard, it is a great game. Although fairly new, it would be a game worth purchasing. Another fairly new game worth purchasing is Heavy Rain. I've only been hearing good things about this game, so you should look into it.

Not only are those recommendations well rounded, popular games, but should provide a satisfactory experience. The great thing about the older games are that they are cheaper and serve as gateways to the entire line-up in that series. Don't worry about having an older game. Just know that you have something to start with.

Be sure to look into online play from still going games such as Rock Band 2, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Warhawk, Burnout Paradise, MAG, GTAIV, and Street Fighter IV.

-Playstation Store-

While I recommend disc based content, how about you look into the Playstation Store? The Store has enough content to garner your attention because it has downloadable content through online purchases, and many of the games are cheaper than regular disc-based content (Not including Add-Ons such as expansion packs), and includes Playstation One Classics, such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy, and others. There is also original and exclusive PSN titles, as well as add ons for disc and non-disc based content. For example, you can find Rock Band 2 songs for purchase and play, or a slew of LittleBigPlanet add-on content for further gameplay options. Get creative! But more importantly, get it cheap.

Really, if you look into the Playstation Store, you get a good idea of what games are out there. I highly recommend looking into the Playstation Network.

Uncharted and Uncharted 2 are the must-own exclusives for the PS3. Period.
I'd personally add Infamous to that list also. Only Uncharted 2 has multiplayer, and its online, but its so fun...never thought I'd like that sorta thing but I play it more often than anything else on my PS3

-infamous
-prototype (like infamous but a shit ton way better)
You really think so? I mean...you're obviously free to have your own opinion but I thought this game was incredibly lackluster especially in comparison to Infamous. Great concepts (and I mean GREAT) but they just didn't quite deliver. Wouldn't say its a bad game by any stretch but a game that spent so long in development it was a bit of a let down...
To be honest I thought they were both pretty bad with infamous being complete crap and prototype being slightly decent. Infamous was just way to either you go complete homicidal maniac or complete saint. One of my grenades accidently killed some civilians and i lost a ton of rep or whatever its called. You cant go neutral at all since if you do your stuck with basically no abilities what so ever and going good is a severe pain in the ass but with no more benefits then going evil. Its had potention but it completely screwed it up with the good/evil system.
Well I'll give you that, the moral system did need quite an overhaul, but I always found it really easy to get it all back, just go around healing hurt people (though yes that does get redundant.) The thing that I liked most about it, especially over Prototype was that everything seemed to flow right with controls and what not. Prototype was trying to put 10lbs or shit in a 5lbs bag. Was just too much and it got in its own way, as far as I'm concerned. Was also just WAY too repetitive, and also reminded me far too much of Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (which the company that made Prototype also made.) It was as if they just took Hulk, gave him a bigger city, and more abilities while making him smaller.

Uncharted and Resistance were the games that I got with my console. But don't get Resistance, really disappointing. So get Uncharted 2 and then get Wipeout HD and Flower.

The first PS3 game I owned was Resistance, but I beat the game then sold it because it was not that good and did not deserve another play through. I do not regret that decision. Get the game MGS4 that would be a good starting point.

Red Dead Redemption. Good story, epic sandbox single player, and possibly the most fun multiplayer I've played in ages. If you've got friends to play it with you, it really is a no brainer. If you must have an exclusive, I hear the Uncharted games are good. I don't actually own a PS3, though my ex did, and I must say I did not like most of the games she had for it.

LBP, it has a timeless quality to it that makes it playable year after year. It is also one of the few potential party games that doesn't involve plastic instruments or LANs.

Also, Blitz 2 is a lot more fun than I even thought possible, and I can't stand to play sports games usually.
