I'm disappointed no one mentioned Ratchet and Clank yet.

Seriously, get Ratchet and Clank. All the games.
I agree.

Ratchet is the way to go.

I'd say look for some oldies but goodies in bins and pawn shops. I've seen Prototype for under 20$.

Older games you can buy twice as many of:
Infamous
Prototype
MGS4
Resident Evil 5
Assassin's Creed
Arkham Asylum

Ok, if you're an FPS fan, I would suggest Killzone 2, it's not ridiculously fast and it feels like you're an actual soldier, but it's very rewarding. If you're not into that then Resistance (2 in my opinion) is a great game with some epic moments.

If you like 3rd person stuff then, God Of War 3 or Uncharted 2, best games of this generation in my opinion. Ratchet and Clank is epic too.

I don't play many RPG's, and I haven't heard anything good about Final Fantasy 13, so if you're an RPG fan, may I suggest PS2, and getting a copy of Arc Twilight of The Spirits, which, just owns.

Uncharted and Uncharted 2 are the must-own exclusives for the PS3. Period.
I'd personally add Infamous to that list also. Only Uncharted 2 has multiplayer, and its online, but its so fun...never thought I'd like that sorta thing but I play it more often than anything else on my PS3

-infamous
-prototype (like infamous but a shit ton way better)
You really think so? I mean...you're obviously free to have your own opinion but I thought this game was incredibly lackluster especially in comparison to Infamous. Great concepts (and I mean GREAT) but they just didn't quite deliver. Wouldn't say its a bad game by any stretch but a game that spent so long in development it was a bit of a let down...
To be honest I thought they were both pretty bad with infamous being complete crap and prototype being slightly decent. Infamous was just way to either you go complete homicidal maniac or complete saint. One of my grenades accidently killed some civilians and i lost a ton of rep or whatever its called. You cant go neutral at all since if you do your stuck with basically no abilities what so ever and going good is a severe pain in the ass but with no more benefits then going evil. Its had potention but it completely screwed it up with the good/evil system.
You get way more rep then you need to max one of the sides, no way a grenade blasting people would ruin it for you, specially since you can heal 4 or 5 people and get the karma back, seems more like BS from me.

The karma system may have been crap, but really was only a reason to play it twice, and by no means ruined the game. Every other thing about inFamous was better than Prototype?

Go for Resistance 1, then buy the second one ... truly the best way to start with the PS3 gaming.

I'll assume you don't want multiplatform games, so here's the list of all the PS3 exclusives I own, in no particular order;

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Theives
InFamous
Warhawk
LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Demon's Souls
Valkyria Chronicles
Killzone 2
Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Heavy Rain
God of War 3
ModNation Racers
3D Dot Game Heroes

[sup](Jeez, even I didn't know how many games I had)[/sup]

So take your pick. They're all succulent specimens and I'm sure you'll enjoy to whatever extent.
I was gonna make a large list myself, but it appears you beat me to it. OP should read this.

That's not including multiplatform games and PSN games

Infact, here are some PSN games;

flOwer
Fat Princess
WipeOut HD
Critter Crunch
SuperStarDustHD

I don't own nearly as much downoadable games as I think I do. Sadly I'm the kind of gamer that needs a new game every 2 or so weeks, so right now I'm insanely bored with nothing to do until my new PC arrives (har har, that's funny, the OP is mainly a PC gamer going to PS3 and I'm mainly a PS3 gamer going to PC! What a twist!)

From the exclusive bin:

Uncharted 1 and 2. (EDIT: Already said!)
inFamous
Heavy Rain

Everything else:

Battlefield Bad Company 2 (if you plan to play games online - not worth the asking price otherwise)
Modern Warfare 2 (same as above, only more so)
Red Dead Redemption
MAG (Multiplayer Only)
God of War 3
Bayonetta

The exclusive pile is in the rough order that I'd recommend. The rest is your own judgement. I would have put other games on there (Dragon Age: Origins for example) but they already existed in a better form on the PC.

KillZone 2, the online is solid.
Just a little difficult to get your teeth into.

Also, Resistance 1 and 2.
I agree. Especially Resistance 2, the online play is much more varied with the addition of co-op.

Also, if you don't mind a great game with only single-player play, I recommend the Ratchet and Clank games. If I remember correctly, Tools of Destruction is on the greatest hits list, so it should be priced lower.

LittleBigPlanet is worth having, too. If you don't already have Batman Arkham Asylum, pick that up sometime too. The free Joker challenge levels are... well, challenging.

Thanks a bunch for all the responses :D
There seem to be a lot of parallels in what people have said, with the same titles coming up over and over again - makes it a pretty easy decision :p
Thanks again guys :)

I'm about to get a PS3, and this will be my first real console (I've been a largely PC gamer up until now). However, my budget for games is somewhat limited and at the moment I can probably only afford one or two. I've had Red Dead redemption recommended to me by a friend, but I was wondering what the escapist community thought was a good game to kick start my PS3 Gaming.

In an ideal world, it would be something with a great story that I could also play multiplayer, both online and splitscreen. Beyond that, style or genre wise I'm not too fussed :)
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, InFamous and Assassin's Creed 2. You can find the first two at dirt cheap prices, but AC2 is still kind of expensive. None of these are multi player, but offer near perfect single player experiences. The Resistance series is good in all areas but not great. Have fun.

If you are a PC gamer I assume you have a great rig, so get exclusives games, as someone already suggested MGS4 is a great option, but it really depends on the genre you like.
