I'm also looking for an easy RTS to get into, as I'm getting a bit bored with FPSes. I tried COH a couple of times but didn't enjoy it that much, same with World in Conflict and Warhammer 40K. I played the first mission of the C&C RA demo yesterday and I'll probably stick with that for the great cutscenes - Peter Stormare and Tim Curry rock! And I could take orders from that uber-hot "Russian" babe that gives you your missions all day and all night long... mmmmm....

But seriously, one problem I have is keeping track of all my units - I suppose I need to spend more time learning the necessary keyboard shortcuts. Right now whenever I play an RTS I get a bit bored with all the pointing, dragging and clicking. Is that a noob thing? Do most of you veteran RTS players use your keyboards more than your mouses?

Dawn of War series. just avoid the new 1 then you´ll be fine.

Age of Mythology is also really neat.

Alien Vs. Predator extinction was the only RTS I ever really got into... giving thought to Halo Wars though specifically so that I can make my own Covenant army in the custom thing... I hate humans.

ive played RTS´s since the age of 3 (not kidding) and no, you dont have to learn the keyboard shortcuts. only if u play online or against bots on the higher difficulties. i rarely use the keyboard. but when i do, its either to mark a group-a-units with the ctrl-1, 2 etc buttons, or when i want to use an ability and is too lazy to click it.

I always thought of Age of Empires/Mythology were really easy to just pickup and play. I loved playing those and I am not a hardcore RTS player. Great games, easy to play and figure out. I highly recommend AoE3, great game.

Starcraft. The original starts off easy at the beginning of each episode, and the learning curve is very accurate. The real challenge comes from the expansion pack, so the original 30 missions wron't force you to be a pro or anything. Maybe the last one though.
It's a fantastic RTS, but perhaps a bit daunting purely because the random map bots aren't too easy. That said, the campaigns do start off hilariously simple.

I would possibly go Age of Empires 2, as a lot of people did at some point. Warcraft 3, Dawn of War etc, to throw ideas out.

Since all the positive reccomendations have been made, here's one to avoid
DO NOT GET SUPREME COMMANDER, for a first RTS it is insanely hard to manage all those hundreds of units running round in different directions.
Although the campaign is pretty funnily easy I suppose...

Dawn of War and Warcraft have a gentle learning curve in the form of clear tutorials. You should have no trouble picking them up, though you might want to avoid online play untill you finished the campaigns or had enough practise.

I'd also recommend the command and conquer games.

I would go with Age of Empires 2 too.
It's simple enough for anyone to just pickup and play, has nice varied factions and the hours I lost making nigh-indestructable bases is almost alarming.

If you want more modern,go with Supreme Commander. It feels like you're an armchair general commanding alot of troops (200++) to their unevitable deaths rather than a guardian angel overlooking the battlefield, putting the injured units gently aside to heal them and whatnot.

It also has the benefit of not having a bullshit "this unit is strong vs.. and weak vs.."
I opts for the more intuitive and brutish(yet WAY more sensible) big robots destroys smaller robot approach that most other RTS just don't have.

Also, you can command a giant fucking robot with a huge laser.
