Anonymous are in some regards something to fear, and others something not to. They don't have any collective leader, so they aren't organised. This is why they shouldn't be feared, most of them are just harmless internet geeks that grow a pair when they can't be physically hit for not growing the fuck up. But like all things, there are some in their group that would try to cause damage. I would tell your friend not to worry over it, it's doubtful they will try anything, and if they do cause grief for him it shows how pathetic the group are.

The Escapist should team up and make a counter anon group D: be, called "Not so anonymous!" xD

OT: Never gotten Anons on my bed side, but I would advise to abandon that youtube account and associated e-mail address.
Good thinking. You don't want to be on 4chan's bad side, but you REALLY do not want to be on their bedside.

Well I'll try to be unbiased with this statement

On the one hand anonymous can be fairly daunting and have some incredible power behind their name which makes the internet feel like some sort of authoritarian regime

On the other hand they've been responsible for victories against racist radio stations, animal abusers and ignoramuses who spout hate for subjects like homosexuality and videogames and in turn give us other Catholics an incredibly bad reputation which we must bare like Jesus baring his cross (See the u2ubers).

Frankly it was a bit silly to insult them in the first place, but what they've done must've gone waaaaaaaay overboard.

Anonymous is a bunch of small nerds that wish they were big, to put it bluntly. They try to scare and threaten people through the internet because if they did it in real life, they'd get the shit kicked out of them (or stabbed, or shot, etc). Don't fear them, just pity them.
I don't think you know quite what you are talking about. Anon is responsible for many ruined lives. Even if many of them are small nerds who "wish they were bigger", they can easily make you regret insulting them, in ways other than physically.
The only threat I can see from them is if they somehow got info on you and were you live, so i wouldn't fear them to much, the internet is easy to turn off.

Which they can get, quite easily. You'd be surprised how easy it is to link a username to a facebook to an address and so forth. The people that think they are 100% secure are the people who should probably be the most cautious.

Your friend should probably go on /b/ and apologise profusely for insulting the internet super-culture that has made his life so miserable, complete with an address for /b/ to forward their responses.

Oh I know they can, and I have taken precautions that make it very hard to get any of my personal info, and plus if they do try anything it's always fun to take them to the police for stalking or something like that.

Tell him to man up :| big Internet G's say things over the Internet for a reason; because they're too scared to say it in real life. No one will lay a finger on him, he shouldn't worry.

Why are you so pro-4chan?
I'm not pro 4 chan, nor against them. I'm just saying don't mess with things that might make you regret it. And never underestimate your enemy.

I don't think he has anything to worry about. Unless you know, he killed a kitten or something. They seem to -really- hate that, I believe they worship cats, rather like the Ancient Egyptians.

The people that post their personal information (address, phone number, any contact information) on public accounts, including facebook, are just asking for somebody to abuse that info. Internet protip: never, never, never post personal information in public places. Just because it's your account doesn't mean it's not accessible to anyone who wants to take the time to look.

I figured most people would know this basic rule... the internet is the fuckin' wild west. Impossible to regulate, and completely anonymous.

Anonymous is a name for some talented individuals with too much time on their hands, who don't call themselves Anonymous and aren't organized. The average petulant anonymous poster has absolutely nothing to do with such people. They aren't organized, they're apathetic. Somebody does something, they accredit it to anonymous and so the legend grows. Your friend has more chance of being killed or harmed by his mother than 4chan. They have the attention span of a blowfly and the collective focus of a cross-eyed cyclops. You'd need to do something truly incredible to rouse the individuals among them with any power to action. These individuals, in the impossible event that your friend should actually bother them, are the only ones who could do anything. Not 'Anonymous'.

Anonymous is scary in the same way a sandwich is scary; Not at all.

Tell your friend he'll be fine.
