In Modern Warfare 2 when you go up into space. And then later when you go back onto the ground and have the helicopters crashing all around you.

Say what you want about the game as a whole, but those two moments were beautiful and very intense.

As many have said, the entirety of Mass Effect 2. Especially when you

go into the derelict Collector ship, just looking around and seeing all those pods is easily one of the most terrifying, yet beautiful sights I've ever seen in a game.

Also, a specific part in Shadow of the Colossus. The way it rears its head back, it just blew me away for some reason. Skip to about 6:05 for what I'm talking about.

After all the years I played 2D sonic the hedgehog games when my uncle got a dreamcast and sonic adventure I was just blow away when I was younger.

Sure Adventure aged really really badly but in that game sonic is so fast he can walk on air

Hah, I played my first char as a melee, never had a problem with running out of ammo. ^^ That was actually more of an issue in New Vegas for me...

Red Dead Redemption: Just watching the sun come up over the landscape. Even something as simple as that was absolutely stunning.
Mass Effect: I could name a dozen things here, but your first view of the Citadel, and the battle with Soverign at the end were both incredible.
Mass Effect 2: There's a hole on my ship. Crap. I'm going to die. Crap. I had actually managed to avoid spoilers concerning the game, so that moment came as a real shock to me. Going to have to make sure that I avoid ME3 news like the plague, as well. With Skyrim out, that shouldn't be too hard

Basically this. Although I'm pretty sure Minecraft maps are endless, if you go too near the edge it just generates another chunk beyond. So it's not that it's 8 times the size of earth, it's just the size of whatever you've explored by that point, limited to the size of the free space on your hard disk. I could be wrong about that though, but I don't think so ...

Eight times the size of earth is roughy the theoretical limit before the software becomes unstable and crashes, according to Notch.

My friends and I are playing a Minecraft SMP server with a map that's just 4 levels of dirt and grass above perfectly flat bedrock. I built a large octagonal wall for a castle I'm starting, and climbed my friend's skybox tower for a view of it. It dominated my view, even with everything my friends had built near it.

Shadow of the colossus.
It's been years since i played it but i remember a HUGE canyon (pretty sure it was near the enormous bridge in the center of the map.
You can spend hours climbing down...OR....jump right off the top and land in the deep water

And yes i did spend hours doing that,sue me. :]

I don't know if I would say "awestruck", but I definitely thought the environment in Brutal Legend was awesome. As much as people find fault with that game, you can't deny there was a good amount of imagination that went into it.

The latest game that I have been struck with awe is Castlevania: Lords of Shadows. That game is just so beautiful, and the music is fantastic.

Elder Scrolls Oblivion, friken HUGE great music and a danm alot of quests, every few seconds at the start I got a heap load of quests.......loved it and still do, but cant wait for skyrim....Also Just cause 2, flying over ? miles in the air and ITS HUGE....

Dwarf Fortress. Giant desert scorpion took my dwarfs axe and chopped him in half with it. I gained immense respect for the beasties from that (and he didn't even beat anyone to death with their pants....)

I got this in the Halo: Reach New Alexandria level, when you see the covenant cruiser come over haed for the fisrt time. It hovers there for a moment and then starts charging it's weapons. All you see is a flash and then the smoldering wreck of of the city silhouetted against an amber glow.
