Seriously. Listen to Requiem by John Rutter (written in 1975, so not really classical, but...) if you want music that touches your soul.

If it's not written between 1700-1825 it isn't classical music.

The best music in existence is Jazz.

I like a lot of Rock too, but Jazz kicks the pants off of everything.

Could you recommend some stuff for me to check out? I love discovering new music.

Most modern music is shit, but there is plenty of beautiful soulful music left if you look for it. Like Streetlight Manifesto, Wonferful music, well orchestrated, good lyrics, and real talent. Although I suggest you listen to Somewhere In the Between though, it is their best album.

I think people who discount poplular music as shit aren't really fans of music at all. People who cannot appreciate a well written song are usually the same people who won't see any movie that isn't showing on a 6 foot screen at an arthouse theater. Music snobs are not music lovers they are people who will only allow themselves to like music noone else does to prove their individuality. How does saying you like the song 'for starlit beaches' from Yndi Halda make you anymore of a Lover of music than someone who Says the song 'Family portrait' by Pink really means alot to them?

But that's not really what most of the people are saying, they're saying they should listen to music that is meaningful and that a lot of pop doesn't do it for them because most of the people are in it to make a quick buck, and it shows.

Everything popular is a pointless trend that's popular for a month before nobody listens to it again. I listen to metal, it's infinitely more interesting and doesn't change with trends. It lets the music evolve slowly and more naturally rather than changing dramatically every couple of months to mimic the latest trendy band.

The 70s were about working class metalheads who put all their heart and soul into a song.
The 80s were about being rich and being better than everyone else. And coke.
The 90s were about not being rich and not doing coke.
Nowadays metal is all about being a scapegoat for politicians and overall being a steriotypical as possible. Thus giving metal a bad name.

I know all these examples are very mainstream. Thats the point they are mainstream because they are trendy.

Okay the OP. Yes music has gone down the shitter. I like the older bands better than the new crap. I miss when musicians actually put their soul into music. They sung well and played amazing guitar and bass, drums. It used to sound like this.

You know what keeps music 'dead'? People who keep saying it is. The only way that music is going to keep its 'soul' is by people going out and making music. There has always been mainstream music and to a lot of people that music has always been soulless. For example, I have no emotion evoked when listening to most techno. Now, that said, is all techno soulless, hell no. I'm sure that by doing a basic search I could find techno that I could relate to. Just in my music collection alone RJD2 and DJ Shadow stand out as being DJs who can bring something new to the table in terms of what I considered to be a 'soulless' genre. For those of you who think that rap is a 'dead' genre I challenge you to look at 10 rap artists beyond the mainstream ones, if you still think that rap is a dead genre then that's your opinion; but, to me, to say that De La Soul and the Roots aren't making good music would be a lie.

I compare this issue to another issue that might hit a little close to home. Here on the Escapist we've had threads saying things along the lines of "The Escapist is Dead" or "The Escapist lost its soul" and to that I say, why ***** about it instead of doing something. It can be as small as supporting lesser-known artists who have new interesting music to bring to the table or as much as starting your own band and working as hard as you can to advance the art form. Music is not dead, people are lazy.

Oh my! Hollywood undead has just proven to me that rap can actually be classified as music again! Look up "Pain" "A Knife Called Lust" and "My Black Dahlia" and tell me rap is still meaningless...

Now now, I'm not bashing the entire rap genre. I just don't much care for the newer, "look how badass I am/we're gonna fuck you up" drivel we've got now.

I'm so not into bashing music in general, I believe any genre can be moving and real. It frustrates me to no end when people do this to me though. I've had friends tell me that metal can't be beautiful, and it like deeply offended me because I see the beauty in it all the time. Even if you're not into heavy thrash or death metal theres like easier going progressive stuff that may not even have distortion which is just amazing.

Also someone call Evergrey 'angry music' just because it was loud and heavy.... Evergrey is probably the saddest band I know... I'd never call them angry, more like beautifully depressed.

Anyways, I already listen to Opeth too, and they are rather good. Thanks a lot for all the suggestions folks, I always love to broaden my music experience

I'm listening to them now thanks to this thread, and I must say I like. I like a lot. Thanks people.

EDIT: I will say though that I have read they are firmly rooted in scandanavian death metal, and so far I only like their slower songs. I honestly can't say that I like death metal, I have always said that I like everything but death metal because it just doesn't seem to be my thing. If anyone has a band they thing is the best thing since sliced bread, show me a link.

Electric Six, no seriously, don't let the song Gay Bar sour your judgement, their latest cd Flashy is brilliant on so many levels. I'm a death/black metal fan and even I can appreciate it's strangely addictive songwriting and performance.

I find people's self righteous love of mainstream commercial music really annoying. especially when they base their criticism of my music on the fact that their music is liked by more people and thus must be better.
If you like Rock (or more specifically progressive rock) then try a band called Porcupine Tree they are an amazing and very touching band. One very nice song is Lazarus off the album Deadwing.
