The disc slides into the PS3 properly, correct?*Sorry, I'm too lazy to look at all the responses to see the problem, I just know the PS3 isn't reading*

If you're hearing nothing when the disc is in, and you see the disc symbol on the PS Menu, then what if, perhaps, the device inside the drive that spins the disc isn't working? If the disc isn't spinning, then the laser can't read the disc.

Warranty? Call Sony and see what they can do. Even if you have no warranty.

In any case, my PS3 controller died from trying to clean it with a touch of water...

Ridiculous, the PS3 has always given me troubles, my first one died a month after it came out next to my original 360 that lasts for 5 years with no errors.

Just offer money or a gift card or something works better.
I am trying to answer everyone bc if you guys are putting in effort, so will I! I have called Sony. Many, many times. No help. That was the paperweight comment.

Second, after reading the forums I don't think I can offer money or gift cards bc gift cards are really just money. I know it's strange but hey. We all know what everyone really would want *wink wink nudge nudge* but I'm not getting banned for getting everyone an hour of with one of those people. You know. . . . massage therapist. Yes.
I'd prefer some good cigars and dessert wine honestly.

---

Short of finding someone who can tell you how to take it apart and fix it by replacing the drive or whatever went bad, your best bet is still Sony.
I can understand the cigars and dessert wine. I think I could swing that. As for Sony. . . they have not been helpful. They have sucked to say the least and to say more they seem to be in training for management in Hell when they die.
But it is your only real solution unless the former comes up and so you DO need to keep contacting them. Maybe you need to try a different connection or report something but you do need to keep trying.

You can quote multiple times in the same post, you know ;)
I am VERY new to this. So, no I do not. Please anything you can tell me about removing my NOOB status will be thanked. I hate filling up my own forum with tons of posts bc we all know how that looks and that takes away from what I am really trying to get done.
I do it too but I know how.

You click quote and then you type your message then press enter a few times and go up the scroll wheel and find another thing to quote and click that and then write it in the box down here that adds it.

does it give you "disk read error" or just not even make note of the disk at all?

The easiest way to fix the situation is contacting Sony and asking for the closest official partnership repair shop that they have.

What could help us DIY fixers though, is the precise model of the PS3 you have. Is it one of those first gen 60GB models with PS2 comp, or the 40/60GB that followed and still had PS2 comp, or the 60/80 that came then, or the 80/160/320 models, or the SLIMs. If I recall correctly, it was the first two generations of PS3 consoles that had the most issues with the BD-laser that made it break and effectively disk-brick the console. In that case, it's only fixable through warranty or getting to the repair shop.

A few solutions.

First, try restoring the PS3 OS.
http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/Technical-Help/If-your-PS3-is-not-reading-disks-there-may-be-a-solution/td-p/6086723

Alternatively, if you're not worried about losing your saved data, or can store it online/transfer it off somewhere, you can attempt a full factory default reset blah blah, which is doable via the same menu as the method above.

If you're still under warranty, you can ask for a new one. If not, you can trade it in for an old refurbished one for 150 dollars or something.

If you're not down with that, you can try and fix it yourself. Chances are the lens for reading discs is either dirty, or broken.

These will void your warranty.
You can try to clean it by following guides like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O-8NzYHr80

If that won't cut it, you can buy a replacement lens for 50 dollars-ish on amazon or ebay. You'll have to install it yourself, it apparently is not TOO difficult. Just make sure you purchase the right kind of lens, because there are two different ones and they're compatible with different PS3 versions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0_-n3bLWiM

My brother gave me his old (broken with this issue) PS3, and I was able to fix it just by cleaning the lens.

Of note, if you decide NOT to do any of this and just buy a new PS3, apparently the "heavier" models have this problem less often. It seems to be more common with the 40G version of the PS3.

Hope this helps, sorry there's no really easy fix. :(

have you used those "can-of air" things to blow all of the dusk out?
I think he uses it during the day.

Seriously though, that wouldn't cause the problem he's having, it would just cause overheating.
HA. I get it now. I was going to say that I use my PS3 day and night so . . . but "dusk" I get it. But also, ahem. . . I am not a man. Does that somehow affect how my PS3 works? Maybe it is offended by my estrogen.
Mah bad. Names on this site are very difficult to determine gender. Anyways, it sounds like either the disk gear or the entire BD-ROM drive is dead. Either way, I'd replace it. It COULD be the motherboard but if that's the case, then it'd be better to just buy a new one. So you can take your chances with the drive, which are kind of expensive, or you can just buy a brand new one if you don't want to take the chance.

This problem happened me not to long ago.
I took it to a local computer and console repair centre. It only cost me about ?50, so it was well worth it.
Inquire at any local computrer repair centres.

This will affect your warranty BTW.

If you can't even hear the CD moving, it's probably the drive that's dead. If you have some technical finesse, you could take it out and see if there's anything that looks broken, and perhaps attempt to fix it yourself.

Odds are as other have said the laser has died meaning your only real option is to pay someone to repair it, it should cost right around 100 dollars. Their might be some local places that will repair it or you can always send it to Sony for about 130 bucks which will get you a refurbished model with a 3 month warranty.

This happened to me and my fiance last week actually - what we did was to trade the unit into Gamestop broken (telling them so) to get the $80 credit minus the $40 refurbishing fee and then traded in a bunch of games we don't play anymore to zero out most of the cost of the new PS3 - which is so lovely and has twice the harddrive memory we used to have :)

We're not rich either, so it was a real blow, but we found that by trading in some things we could get our game on still and have a new unit besides - thing is, to send it in to playstation to fix it was actually more expensive (in the long run) than doing what we did.

I had this kind of problem a little while ago. If when you put the discs in, they wait for a second, then make a sound that sounds like a disc being ejected (I can't think of a better description), but without ejecting the disc, then you've got a broken disc drive, and all you can do is send it to sony. If it's not making that sound, sorry, i can't help

Yep, my latest PS3 had that happen last year. Never bothered to replace it, as I stopped playing it in favour of my PC and 360.

Hey there.

I've had a PS3 die on me like this, I may be able to help and i'll require no baked goods 'cause i'm just that goddamn nice a person.
Firstly a few questions:
What make is the ps3? (Original 60GB with backwards compatibility? 360GB? Etc)
Do PS1 discs still work?
Does the little disc icon come up on the screen when you put the disc in? If so can you load the splash screen of the game when on the XMB?

By the sounds of it, your PS3 has well and truly kicked the bucket. They're fairly cheap in Aust right now, but if you can wait the two or so months till Christmas (and you don't get one by then), you could pick one up cheap in those wonderful post-Christmas sales!

Maybe take it to a local electronics shop? Or send it to Sony for repair. I wouldn't mess with it yourself, the risks are too high.

I'm surprised with all the people saying their PS3s died on them. I've had mine for nearly four years and it hasn't had an issue past a faulty composite cable port that I need to jiggle every few hours of play or the sound and video become distorted.
