Still beats those crazy Christian schools.
My "crazy Christian school" had a "no making out rule" supplemented by a "don't make everyone nearby squick" rule. Brohugs were almost encouraged, though any kiss was frowned on.

How crazy.

OT: My school's only "insane rule" was no gum (which they later rescinded under terms of "please throw it in the garbage when done"). I guess this makes me lucky?

Isn't this quite commonplace in schools in the US?

I don't know, it just sounds familiar to me.
I'm glad none of the schools over here enforce anything remotely close to such a policy.
It isn't standard by any means. Since each of the states is allowed to regulate it's educational policies and standards, with a greater degree of freedom than you'd think, this a very regional problem. Add in the fact that the counties also get a great degree of freedom in a number of states, the exemptions applied to religious organizations, as well as a number of economic factors such as the wealth of the area the school is in and the families that attend, or the degree of funds available to the schools in question and you have a very diverse series of problems.
It could just be the pedagogical approach of the people who have placed in charge of the curriculum, or it could go to the thoughts and opinions of the local school board.
In most parts of the US, local politics are seldom covered, often corrupt, and based mostly on familial relations and business partners than on serving the public.

As an aside: In many states, Religious Organizations do not have to abide by the same regulations imposed upon day care centers and are therefore allowed to operate at much lower standards.

my school has implemented a "no bark" policy so that freshmen dont get barked at... and now they make the kids do extended homeroom so they can have a "bully circle" where kids are encouraged to talk about incidences of bullying, but from what i've heard these sessions are treated as jokes by students, is it just me or did anyone else's school not give two shits when people were getting bullied before, but now cause some people have killed themselves its like some huge, unknown terror that has swept the nation.

lets be honest with ourselves now, bullying is a fact of life, always has, always will be. ill be the first to tell you that it sucks, all through middle school i was ridiculed for liking 40K, but then i kicked the shit out of one of the guys that was picking on me, and i never got trouble from them again. i think the problem today is that we arent telling kids to stand up for themselves enough, it's always "tell an adult" or telling bystanders to "step in if you see bullying happening". personally, i think the message should be "stand up for yourself in whatever way is necessary", because they not only do you stop bullying, you also empower the children who are getting bullied to do something about "hands on" shall we say...

I'm happy to report that some parts of the world aren't so male-phobic. I worked in childcare for about 18 months a couple years ago, and was not escorted out of the room whenever a nappy was changed. In fact, eventually I ended up doing most of them.

Take it a step further and kiss on both cheeks like other countries do for greeting instead of hugging. As long as you don't hug they can't *****, and you still piss them off.
This do this! If you get punished , sue the for cultural discrimination! Money , scandale , money! Its a win/win

Luckily, high school is a fleeting, nearly pointless experience that you will forget all about soon enough. In 15 years, you'll be demanding random things of your local school board, things like "ALL CHILDREN SHOULD BE FORCED TO WEAR CHICKEN COSTUMES IN CLASS. THIS I DEMAND."

I never thought I'd see people so upset about not being able to hug.

You're not there to embrace other people in your arms, you're there to learn. And if those rules are killing you, wait until you get a job.

Soon they'll be teaching creationism.
Here in Manitoba there are a few schools that teach "intelligent design" as opposed to evolution and they don't stop there. My school required me to say the lords prayer every day at the beginning of first period or risk expulsion.
In the end i graduated from an adult ed centre.

one teacher in my primary school said "no going to the toilet except from at 1:05-1:08."
and the same one put two guards at the door who werent allowed to let anyone inside at breaks. not even for a coat when its raining... and finally, I saw someone get told off for pretending their hand was a gun.

In secondary school I was banned from using chopsticks, going outside and fast walking.

This is hardly the worst thing a school could do and truthfully with all the pda at my old high school I would of loved a rule like this to be enforced.

Back when I was in A-Levels, my school tried something similar. A few other people and I got on the phone to some lawyers about it, the school got a few dozen phone calls and a few days later the rule was mysteriously repealed.

In your case, since the rule applies only to males hugging other males, you could sue for unlawful discrimination on the basis of gender and sexual orientation. If you get a lawyer on a no win no fee basis and go to the press with your accusations, you should be able to turn the screws tightly enough to reverse the decision.

This.

Do this.

It's a great idea, and if you don't take a stand now your School will only enforce even crazier rules.

I suppose my high school wasn't that bad, then. It was a religious school so it's not like we were allowed to do some things anyway (Skirts can't go above the knee, guys need to be clean-shaven, no electronic devices allowed, etc.). But perhaps the weirdest thing they did was ban all "skull" images from school property. Let me elaborate.

One day, I was wearing a Jack Skellington scarf and gloves. THen the preferc lady comes out of nowhere and tells me to remove it because it has skulls on them and apparently, that's not religious or something. I explain to her that it's freakin' Jack Skellington, the protagonist of a Disney movie, the king of Halloween. She still tells me it's not allowed and makes me remove my scarf and gloves. And it was freezing.

There were some other crazy things like girls weren't allowed to havbe super red or super blonde hair, unless it was natural (And it obviously wasn't), we weren't allowed to wear any bracelets or necklaces at all and of course, clean uniforms every day. Like I said, this was a religious school so it comes with the territory.

...But hugs and high-fives WERE allowed. :/

Ok, what? Seriously? Here in Germany, you would be laughed off the stage for even suggesting such a rule. As prim as we are, I can't think of any teacher who would support that rule. o0

My school has made a few pretty bad decisions in the recent years. we all do exams a year early and over 1 year (despite them being made for 2 years and most universities only accept 1 years worth), firing all but 1 geography teacher, not letting pupils use a gate to go home/to the shops at lunch (for food) and cracking down on full-contact sports.

but now, they have taken that final step. SMT[footnote]Senior Management Team[/footnote] has snapped.

we arent allowed to hug any more.
or, more specifically, guys arent allowed to hug people. because theyre insane.
and no, i am not making this up. one of my friends got a warning for hugging another guy.

so Escapists, i ask of ye, what are your opinions on this?
and has your schools SMT ever done something this insane?
i dont understand the first point
why would you need more than 1 geography teacher? its a pretty specific subject
use a gate to go home? do you guys teleport places? what country is this? (my school we werent allowed to leave the building during school hours)
not really suprising, full contact sports are dangerous and they are covering thier asses to not be sued

as for the last one the SMT is clearly closeted and dont want any further influence. that or they are homophobes. i dont see any good reason for that.
