I don't get why everyone is talking so badly about the mom.

So your a parent and you kid asks to buy something for 5 or 10$ off xbox and you let them(Heck if her kid had a Wii previously it doesn't keep your card info).

OMG what a shitty mom! I think some people here just have mother issues.

The kid was clearly in the wrong, at age 11 he would know he was stealing and being sneaky. He was even being reckless and buying useless indulgent things like avatar items. If it was my kid he would be working to pay every penny back, first step: sell his xbox....

... or I would just keep it, think about all the shit I would have downloaded :p

Dear god... That mom sucks as a parent. Hopefully the kid got his xbox taken away... Not just as punishment, but because I despise the people on XBL who either scream "HACKER!!!" in their high-pitched voice, or are just too stupid to think of the end result of using a credit card on their xbox. I just drive up to Wal-Mart and get the cards with the scratch off stuff on the back...
I love the scratching off part...
Me too. It's like scratching a lottery scratch ticket, but you win every time!

(this captcha nonsense is nonsense.)

And that is what happens when you are a bad parent and let a console entertain your idiot son instead of spending time with them and educating them.

Ouch. Poor mom. Makes you wonder if the kid knew what he was doing, or if it was with malicious intent (which I highly doubt, TBH.)

Kids an idiot but not completely to blame imo.
Did I miss something? If knowingly using your mom's credit card info to buy stuff she didn't give the ok for doesn't make you the one to blame then I think the world is doomed. Leaving her credit card info was careless, but it's like saying it's the owner's fault for leaving his car parked when someone broke in and stole something.
I was only really talking about the fact that she left her credit card info with the child. She could have easily prevented this from happening but she didn't take the necessary measures.
I definitely agree, since when are kids trustworthy? <- Not being snarky, being a realist.

I feel bad for her. It's not like it's on her top priorities to watch her son's Xbox account.

Well, that kid's definitely using his own money to pay for anything he wants until he moves out...

Also, to everybody trying to defend the kid. He's 11. He should be well aware of the way credit cards work by then. This kind of situation arises precisely because of people not thinking that children can understand these 'complex' (<-dripping with sarcasm) concepts and therefore don't bother instructing them.

That said, blame also lies with the parents for not keeping better track of their finances because I would think you'd notice £1087 being spent over the course of six months. Granted, there were circumstances that made it difficult for her to check her exact transactions and she was no doubt preoccupied with the fact that her father had been diagnosed with cancer but still...

I suppose this simply stands as a testament to the problems inherent with the current e-transaction system.

EDIT: I just ran £1087 through into dollars and what in the world did the kid spend $1751 on in just six months?!

I blame the parent partially, not all know that their card info stays until you cancel.

AND THE CHILD. I had access to my moms card when she signed me up for Xbox Live when I was around that age. I didn't go around abusing it. We saw this thing a while back with a child charging a ton for Farmville stuff.

(On a Side Note)
I could see Fox abusing this news. Video Games caused a child to charge his moms credit card for $1,000.

One word: Irresponsible

The mom was irresponsible for putting her bank card details and leaving them there and not asking if he was doing any more spending.

The kid was irresponsible for being frivolous and spending all his mom's money without thinking of the consequences and how it would affect her (didn't even ask permission).

I know many will blame the mom more but I personally blame the kid since I knew about money and banking and how it affects people by that age. But then again I suppose it could all be the mom's fault for failing to teach him about money.
And the child should have to pay his mom back. Either sell his stuff for find his ass some jobs such as delivering newspapers, mowing lawns, shoveling sidewalks, walking dogs, until the bill is paid in full. Plus ground him till he's 16
Indeed, where I come from kids start working the moment they're strong enough to lift any kind of tool so I don't buy the "too young" excuse. But then again I am from Africa and there are widespread child labor problems all over the place.

I laughed a little at this, something tells me the mother is also misdirecting her anger. The 11 year old should have known better, and it's not like he spent all the money in one shot. Why was the mother not monitoring her finances?

Be kinder on the mom. Most peoples are unused to how credit cards work with today's online purchase and might have not noticed that her card info been saved into the machine. The only thing that is bothering me is that the mom didn't notice her bill was way up the first month. If it works the same way as here, we get the bill every month.
She didn't notice every month on her bill that there were many Microsoft Xbox purchases or however it's phrased? I had fraudulent charges, and I use my card online for steam, xbox and playstation quite a bit, as well as online shopping, but something I hadn't bought stuck out like a sore thumb to me. It was going on for 6 months, so she pretty much glanced at her bill each month it seems.

Fail, on both the parts of the parent and the child.

Also, OP, it's "should have," not "should of." That is one of the most annoying and nonsensical mistakes... ever.

Hole on one moment *leaves the room* BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!....AHAHA...Aha...
*notices he didn't close the door*
Uh...right...anyways.
They're both in the wrong; she should be more careful with her money, checking her statements often and starting to investigate after the first bounce letter. The child should know what credit cards are used for (I did) and that money isn't unlimited, and that his Mother would probably be in a tonne of shit if he spends more than what he said. Ground him, sell the Xbox, and the mother should go to parenting classes and finance classes.
