You do know the Mayans never actually said the world would end in 2012, and it's just an event in their calendar which has happened many times before in History?

Even if they had said the world would end, what do they know? They believed in a Corn God.

(Hopefully that doesn't count as racism. But you know I'm right.)

Let's judge if Mayans are a credible source.

How many prophecies did they accurately predict?
Obviously not their invasion by the Spanish xD lololol
They actually prophezised that a god of theirs would return in the form of a white man (or something to that effect, I can't remember exactly). They assumed that this was a Spaniard.

The Mayan Calendar was a circle, it doesn't "end" at 2012.

Also I'm going to be pissed if the world really does end in 2012. The MFA in Boston won't be opening their new coin exhibit until October that year, and I want to see it. Yes I am a nerd.
Not enough of one to know that the end of the world happens in december of 2012...
...touche, sir. haha, if this can salvage my nerd reputation in any way, I'm more interested in Ancient Greece and Rome. New world archeology has never really been my thing...

Thing is, even if the mayans are totally right in everything they say, there's still two things people missed:
1) According to their history, this is about the 6th time This has happened.
2) Every time it does happen, they say that two people will live and start anew.

So even if everything exlopdes in a cavlecade of fire, we're not all screwed. Admitidly, there's about a 1 in 500,000 chance at best of surviving, but hey - better then 0 in 1, right?

Anyone who believes 2012 is an "earth shattering event", obviously has been watching too much "History" Channel [right after Larry the Cable Guy tours America and before the new episode of Hitlers secret UFO!].

When the Spanish explorers conquered the Mayans, a majority of their tablets were destroyed, so who are we to say that their calender ended at 2012?

For all we know it could of continued for thousands of years.

Hell, maybe they were actually smart and knew that they didnt need a calender to go so high, so they created a drop-off point, much like the Pac-Man arcade game and Duck-Hunt.

[small]or maybe........just maybe..........the Mayans were the worlds first trolls....[/small]

THINK ABOUT IT!
There's a kill screen coming up Dec 21st 2012, THERE'S A KILL SCREEN COMING UP DEC 21ST 2012!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hern%C3%A1n_Cort%C3%A9s. I'm not too sure where it is in that article, but if my history is correct, I think it's this guy who basically said "Hey, let's pretend we're the Gods they think we are so we can get lots of gold".

The Mayans were just people, but the whole calender thing is open to interpretation. I'd say, personally, if there is some kind of significance, it was supposed to be an anniversary type thing. Basically, if the Mayan civilisation had survived until 2012, my guess is that they would have passed down something that tells the king (or ruler in general) to do X,Y and/or Z when the calender runs out. Either for Religious reasons, or to mess with their great-great-great-great-great-great grandkids' minds.*

*Same reason I'm going to go blonde and tell my kids that I was the inspiration behind Barbie dolls. >:)

I have been thinking a lot lately about this 2012 thing and peoples worries. With all the earthquakes and whatnot I came up with something using science. Since all these earthquakes that are greater then 5.0 can slow down the earth's rotation causing time to increase as people see it, then is it not possible for the earth to slow down an hour and start making new days? If so then would that not make a new month or add more days to the month? Then maybe 2012 is just a new calender we need to get made, because if we get one hour for every day, after 365 day we get about 15.2 days extra. If it is more time then it is more days. So maybe 2012 is a day when we should make a new calender to make up for all these extra days?

There is more to add but I might start talking in circles but this is just an idea I had.

Look up the facts, high powered earthquakes do slow us down This is possible
One minute problem with your theory. A slowing of the Earth's rotaion would only extend the length of a day, not increase the number of days. Actually it would reduce the number of days in one year.

Yay cold logic!

Wasn't that the Aztecs, not the Mayans? I'm not even going to try spelling the Gods name...starts with a T.

Not going to happen, but I figure eventually the calendar will change. 2012 is very unlikely though.

Besides, wasn't 2012 a mistranslation anyway? Could swear that was off by a few decades...but I might just be making stuff up now.

I would fully agree, they always seemed way more viseral and real to me than the new world.

Anyone who actually thinks 2012 holds any kind of apocalyptic significance is a moron, plain and simple.

Sure, ignore science, I'm sure the Mayans knew exactly what they were talking about, without any religious influence whatsoever.
As far as I know, Mayans didn't even predict anything for 2012, that's just when they'd change calendars, like they did every few hundred years.
But even if they did, I agree, it wouldn't matter.

It just seems people were disappointed the world didn't end in 2000, so they are getting their hopes up now in case the apocalypse was delayed due to the administration error or something.

Oh joy, a massive earth-shattering prophecy that's actually backed by science. Actually that may be why I haven't heard of it until now...

This. Although the Mayan culture undoubtedly brought many interesting changes and advances to the world at large, they also prayed to winged serpents and committed mass murder as a form of social activity. I wouldn't place too much stock in the whole '2012' thingie...

I was just posting a theory, but thanks for the incite every one. I will learn from this and do it better next time. =)

Side note: If the world is going to end, no one will be able to predict it in my point of view.

Or maybe the Earth is going to say "Screw this" and start spinning faster than ever on December 21st 2012!!! Then an annoying song will start playing. Thats right.... "ROUND,ROUND,ROUND, etc".

OT: 2012 comes round, start a conquest. What? with everyone panicking over something or another that they think is meant to be occuring that day, it won't be out of place if I go medievil and do a King Arthur... Or is it William? I think it's William.
