I have been thinking a lot lately about this 2012 thing and peoples worries.
You mean the worries that people largely don't have, obviously.

I've said it before on these forums and I'll now say it again: if the Mayans knew shit about shit they would have ended their calendar in 1697 when the Spanish handed to them their ass on a plate.

That is all.
Ahaha, well put indeed.

I would like to also point out the silliness of the phrase "came up with something using science" to start off the post.

So what if the Mayan calender stopped at 2012, that doesn't foretell the end of the world. Going by that logic, my calender predicts the end of the world on the 31st December this year.
That has always been my hypothesis, that their calender had to end eventually. Plus, plenty of people have thought that they were going to be there for the apocalypse, armageddon the end of the world as they know it (maybe out of some sick sort of pride?), but none of those happened. (as far as I know) .

A better explanation lies here:
[link]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar[/link]

TL;DR, The Mayan calender operates on various cycles such as Winals, Tuns, K'atuns and B'ak'tuns. 2012 is the date of the next B'ak'tun.

Previous B'ak'tuns include September 18th 1618, June 15th 1224 and go back as far as August 11th 3114 BC. Future B'ak'tuns are scheduled for March 26th 2407, June 28th 2801 and so on. In fact the last B'ak'tun (or rather the furthest calculated) lies on October 13th 4772.

link, sources, and research excerpts, OH MY!

Anyone who believes 2012 is an "earth shattering event", obviously has been watching too much "History" Channel [right after Larry the Cable Guy tours America and before the new episode of Hitlers secret UFO!].

When the Spanish explorers conquered the Mayans, a majority of their tablets were destroyed, so who are we to say that their calender ended at 2012?

For all we know it could of continued for thousands of years.

Hell, maybe they were actually smart and knew that they didnt need a calender to go so high, so they created a drop-off point, much like the Pac-Man arcade game and Duck-Hunt.

[small]or maybe........just maybe..........the Mayans were the worlds first trolls....[/small]

THINK ABOUT IT!
It's not the last one.

Anyway lol at 2012, mayans ran out of calendar symbols, etc.

Actually they had several calenders, and when one ended a new one begun.

They just hadn't made one past 2012... I mean I bet two Mayans whos job it was to make calenders had this Conversation.

Mayan: Man this Calender carving sure sucks doesn't it?
Nayam: Yeah, and why the hell do we need one for 2012? Thats like in the future... Let someone else do it!
Mayan: HELL YEAH! Lets go to the Pub and Drink Beer and watch some Human Sacrifice.
...
Spaniard: DIE MAYANS!

Thus ends the sory of why Mayan and Nayam didn't continue the Calender.
